Despite the fact that this is fully rendered both ponies look very flat and just odd. The more you go along the worse it gets. Ive looked at some of your works and you come off as someone who likes making pretty pictures and that's it. You hardly have any kind of voice right now. I suppose stuff like that is meant to impress dummies who are easily distracted by dangling keys. It's good enough for pony, I guess. Personally I'm not impressed.

I'm mostly inspired by animated movies like Pixar's movies, I want my art to be at the same quality at some point, with a soft 3D-like rendering and nice looking cartoony characters. The artist I think of first being my inspiration is Nibblepencil (José Manuel Fernades Oli), he's a character artist on Rio, Peanuts etc, I also like a lot Dice Tsutsumi from Tonko House (the Dam Keeper, Monster University, Toy Story 3), Ryan Lang (concept artist on Big Hero 6), Sergio Pablos for SPA studio, Cory Loftis (Zootopia), Nathan Fawkes (most of dreamworks movies and Rio). In the brony scene I'm inspired by Crookedtrees, AsassinMonkey, Tsitra, Huusi, NCmares and the little new Obpony (pic related). And in the furry scene my sempai is Veramundis who has the softest rendering and Caraid.
All theses peeps is what makes me continue doing art, Bobby Chiu an emmy award concept artist says we have to set ourselves as artists a goal of what kind of level we want to have, and my goal would be to have Nibblepencil's level.
I would say to have this level, the best would be to study their art and try to talk to theses people. Having their critiques, understanding the way they think, and listening to their knowledge is the best thing that could happen to you. What I do is mostly break the ice, take my balls and talk to them online or IRL if I happen to be in the same room, and it worked. If you are super nice to them they will mostly be polite with you !

You can find a mentor easily, there's plenty of art schools online, video tutorial on youtube, the art field is a lot about sharing so it's not hard to find the ressources you need for learning !

yes ! In painting the most basics of stuff is knowing how to paint a ball 3D-like ! It's not that complicated.

>3. highlight
>4. bouncelight (the light coming from the floor or an object)
>5. cast shadow

with theses 5 steps you get a nice 3D rendering ! And it's not obligated to paint to do them, you can do theses exercises on paper or include this kind of rendering on less technical drawings. It's just a way to make your drawing less flat

pros and cons to these threads. pro is art enthusiasts get to share their work with people who will enjoy it. con is up and comers might get discourages seeing all this college level shit when they cant even into visualization and lineart, let alone perspective conscious lineless shading. so the thread usually fills up with masters who already know everything and beginners who dont grasp how difficult everything is, while the people who have tried and have shitty art feel a bit discouraged because its kind of like reaching for the sun from the ground.
