Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure the only pics I even fapped to were the ones where you could just see ponies having sex, not their genitals. And then Milky showed up as a sort of mockery of the crazy "crotchtits" of the era. That was like the transition to accurate junk though. It still amazes me how little anatomically correct shit is out there, but then I only have to think back to when there was none.

I would actually say early-Season 3. The unholy fucking shitstorm thrown in response to The Crystal Empire as a premiere - which in retrospect was only 'meh' in comparison to the steaming piles of shit we've been served lately - was an indication of just how high people's expectations were and how overwhelming the response to even mediocrity was.

The genuinely bad episodes of S3 shattered the belief that the show couldn't fall. Then Lauren's departure, EqG, Twilicorn stirred the embers into an inferno, but by then the season was already halfway through.

2011-2012 was a magical time.
There was a healthy amount of hate, but none of it too serious or overwhelming. Meanwhile the fandom was riding the high of being new and bizzarre, attracting anyone and everyone.

Fanwork mills were running overtime. Everday you could hear a new song, find new art, read new stories, and you could always find a fourm filled to the brim with people discussing whatever topic you wanted.

Servers and mods for games were sparked and burning bright. You could totally transform TF2 into Equestria fortress with custom models, textures and maps for anything you could imagine. Garrysmod was turned into a mini-RP scene as pony playermodels and props became introduced.

Anyone making fanwork wanted their own original style. So we got the likes of the Cupcakes fanfic, Eurobeat Brony, Ask blogs, and fan favourite artists.

Love and tolerate was our real message for a time. The pony fandom wasn't about analyzing the episodes or drawing porn, in fact porn was looked down upon during the early days by a good chunk of the fandom, if not most. The message was to have fun, make memes, spread cheer, and not to give into haters. It was honestly a really noble thing to see.

When S3 came around it was doompaul day. /mlp/ alone was faster than /b/ for a time when Twilicorn happened. It all kinda went downhill after that.

So yeah, 2011-2012 was THE time to be a brony. That word was used unironically and proudly: for good reason.

Yes. 2011-12 was the high point. At that time the only drama was that Faust was now only working in a secondary role on the show. The fandom had not yet grown so enormous that it would start to turn on itself. It was still relatively fresh and new. There wasn't nearly as much to catch up on, nor as much baggage associated with it. Twilight Sparkle was an adorkable unicorn student and Equestria Girls was just an (amazing) ad on the Hub.

Also, is it just me, or does anyone else get the feeling that the fandom has a lot more people these days in their teens than it used to, whereas it used to be much more dominated by people in their 20s-30s?

I wandered into this place one day from the various innocent pony fourms and never really left.
So I have no idea what it's like on the outside anymore, but I feel that back then it was even more taboo because the porn base was small and hard to find, but now it's so large and undeniable that it's just a fact, like porn of any other kind.

If you look at the old EqD polls from back around 2011-12 something like 1/3-1/4 of the people there admitted to clopping. A similar poll taken a couple years ago had that number down to about 1/10. That could also be a reflection in the change in the type of people who visit EqD though.

Oh man, I loved all the background pony ask blogs. The dozens of Derpy and/or Dr Whooves ones were fun, some of them great for an askblog. The voiceacted ones on youtube were top notch.
The OC's never really appealed, because only some were any good.

Ever read discord whooves? It's a classic.

Fucking yes. It was soul-crushing and yet hopeful, compelling at the same time it beat you over the head. My issue was that it simply ran on too long - nothing seemed to be going anywhere. We'd go through the cycle of 'Doctor does funny shit', 'emergency drops into his lap', 'hopeful moment', 'corrupted personality reasserts itself again' over and over again - and eventually I just lost interest. I know the author said he was going to try and refocus on the story and even complete it, but it still didn't seem to be going anywhere.

OCs were a mixed bag. 90% of everything is shit, and no exceptions there. The best ones were the people who realized their OC wasn't just special because, and they were going to have to tell a decent story if they wanted your attention.
