Every character was a shit through this season except for when the plot was about them being bullied by the others. The current staff has no respect for the characters, and you shouldn't put any more thought into it than they do. It's shitty, but that's just how it is now. If you want to enjoy the show, follow the "but cute ponies being cute!" crowd and ignore the plot and characterization, and just focus on cute screencaps to make you feel good.
