I think one of the show's biggest problems is that they try to shove in too many references and other stuff just for the sake of it. They focus too much on putting things in the background. Such as different and unique pony models, which aren't necessarily bad, but just steal the focus from the main crew too often.

I think back when Jayson Thiessen was in charge he really did hold Jim Miller back as Theissen was always described as having an encyclopaedically knowledge of the world and putting effort into making it fit well together, but since he's gone Miller just showed that he can't really handle it alone.

Along with people who are really just in to make money it's not a good recipe in the long run.

I think the first few seasons are better since they had so many new ideas and ways to work on the lore and to show us friendship lessons of Twilight and the main characters. Newer seasons usually expand the lore a lot further, but it takes a lot more to keep it interesting and still make an episode that doesn't overlap with former episodes. Also we have seen so much of the mane six that the story writers find new ideas from new settings and characters, which some are not as interesting as in early seasons.

I disagree. Yes, they've been places, but it hardly feels they've exhausted all of Equestria and beyond. There are still quite a few places, times, and ponies we haven't seen or haven't learned much about. The places don't feel samey. They each have their own character that is really obvious in the different backgrounds and side ponies that show up at each one.

As for the characters achieving their dreams, all of this was laid out from the beginning and easily tracked and predicted. We know from episode one that Dash wants to be a Wonderbolt. I'm glad they get to have their triumphs. I want to be able to cheer for them, but that doesn't mean they've outgrown their world. The whole show was never meant to be confined to Ponyville, and I would be incredibly sad if it forever stayed in generic small town #5. That doesn't mean the little problems don't matter. On the contrary, it shows how much they do. None of the characters would be where they are without the others.

I think there's something to this. Twi's arc was completed at the end of S3. Rarity and Dash had their arcs completed already. One could make the case for Flutters as well. Hell, even the CMC had their arcs completed. AJ and Ponk never had arcs to fulfill - their roles were established from the start.

But now we have a world where none of the main characters are striving for anything, they sit in a throne room around a map waiting for the next friendship problem to solve while all conflict happens between secondary characters. Contrast that with S1, where everything was world building and the view of the crazy characters of Ponyville through the eyes of sarcastic purple horse. Now most episodes have taken place with sarcastic purple horse as alicorn princess. That's a totally different show. There's nothing left to resolve with any of the main characters (unless they open up the idea of romance, which would change everything). So they only conflicts were going to see will be between secondary characters. There will never be another episode like Dragonshy where all six main characters have to resolve a conflict in a way that forces them to account for each others' weaknesses. Because they've overcome those weaknesses for the most part, and have assumed their roles in a more adult world.

At the start the main characters were an odd mix of child like naivete with responsibilities similar to those of young adults. Now they've all assumed adult roles and responsibilities. The only thing missing from their completion as adult characters would be romantic relationships, and I can't imagine the show going there.
