The first two episodes are considered to be mediocre/bottom of the barrel by most people's standards. I started out the same way as you anon, thought the whole brony thing was weird, made fun of it, then I hopped on the ride in highschool and here I am years later.

In my opinion, the only way to fairly judge the show is to watch the entire first season, gives you a taste of everything that makes the show good. This show is amazing becuase of what it was when it came out, and the addition of fantasy elements if few and far between. waifu fags are the only reason it has any fucking steam in a community like this. The songs are a large part of the appeal for many fans. As the seasons progress, many of them are quite good for a children's show. Daniel Ingram, the main music guy for the show, is quite talented, and the voice actresses (the ones that can sing) as well as singers they get to replace VAs who can't sing, are all very good.

They start small in season one with a lot of short, one-off numbers usually sung by Pinkie Pie, which were hit-or-miss for most people. I believe "Winter Wrap-Up" was the first big hit song from the show that made fans go "I wouldn't mind seeing more of this"; and from then on there were more big numbers. Of course, these are also hit or miss, as they seem to have developed a quota for them as the seasons went on. Not all of them are great, some are even bad, but the good ones are *very* good and are worth sitting through the bad, imo.

TL;DR I hope you're not one of those fags who hates musical numbers on principle, cause you're in for a lot more of them.

The working assumption I've arrived at after watching every season of this show is that Celestia has the power to solve almost any problem that crops up, but doesn't because her role is kind of like a mother figure/mentor to the main characters (and her subjects generally), who wants them to solve their own problems so they grow as people. From an outside perspective, I suppose it must look like she is either very good at predicting outcomes, is lazy/negligent, but if you watch enough of the show, it'll dispel that notion pretty fast. I don't think it's fair to say that the show doesn't have a coherent timeline or overarching plot. Each season obviously follows the other, most events in each season follow a chronological order.
