I don't think EQG takes place on "our" Earth, but rather an alternate reality which is half way between Equestria and actual Earth. Their countries and states are probably completely different to account for the differences between the two realities.

Seconded. Hippie motherfuckers from Boulder love the wilderness an shit. I've yet to see any indication of a nearby ocean, so that removes the Pacific Northwest in my book. There seems to be very little rain in the series, much like in Colorado which has the highest average days of sunshine throughout the year. I've yet to see any snow (that I can recall) so that's a tick that I can't make yet. Colorado also has a very large agricultural basis which would go well with Applejack and her family, while it's a stretch, I've met plenty of Colorado Natives who never left the state that boast southern accents (mostly from family), so that nixes any argument toward argument.
