My opinion has always been that animation quality has much more to do with quality of vision, dedication to sticking too that, and man-hours/cash put towards it than the specific programs used. Especially the comments here saying that there's very little difference between Toonboom and Harmony, I'm withholding complete judgement until I can see an example of this - it could be amazing, or utter shit. We can't know based on this alone.

With that said, two addenda: One, some of what are supposedly movie art that showed up in announcement articles looked semi-decent, so most of my hope is based on those.

Two, this is mild hype regarding the animation alone. I'm leaning towards negative on the storyline; while some decent and experienced writers have been brought onboard, everything we've been told so far about the plot points to a bizarre and messy thing that I can't say I'm hopeful about.

It won't look like the Lion King or anything like that, it will look EXACTLY the same as before, MAYBE it will be made easier to animate, but the end result will be the same. The only difference you can make is to handdraw more frames to make it look better, and that applies to flash as well.

Animator here. You are mega retarded. I was at a con recently and overheard someone talking about Harmony and everything they said about the program was objectively wrong, but they were saying it with this bizarrely supreme confidence.

Harmony is just a higher-end form of animation software. It's still suitable for rigs, but it has a lot more tools and it's intentionally designed for animation, unlike Flash which Adobe insisted for years was not an animation program. The recent 180 turn Adobe did on that was because everyone on the planet is abandoning the crash-prone, security-vulnerable Flash, and the only people still using it are online animators who tend to pirate the software.

Not to get into technical details, but there's an absurd world of difference between Harmony and Flash. Flash's latest breakthrough is becoming a 64 bit program and implementing a brush that changes sizes with your screen zoom correctly. Flash is still not a program you can draw in or that you can cost-effectively use for much traditional animation.

Basically, by switching to Harmony, they're saying that everything is going to look the same to the casual observer, but about a hundred doors are now open for superior animation techniques.

I'm not sure why they used Flash in the first place, but my guess is because Flash animators are generally paid less and the whole project was a heck of a lot cheaper that way.

it's a double edged sword here
going from film to television, you have a smaller budget and if it isn't either engaging or near on par with the films quality, it isn't going to last long, not to mention that the VA's for the cartoons are almost always different than the ones in the film

the reverse also true, the changes made may make the characters look worse than what people are used to, then going BACK to the old budget, you get the old animation style that might look better or worse than what was in the film
no matter how you slice it, there will be plenty of people who like it and those who loathe it

I just hope that the changes aren't too drastic and the film is still somewhat enjoyable

because of our fanbase, what kind of shit is going to happen in the film that will confirm or denounce headcanons about characters and the world?
if G4 keeps going after the movie, how will it fit in canonically?
will it be like EqG, where it's set up to where the viewer can choose if it's canon or not?

Turbo: a Power Rangers Movie, switched their ranger suits back to what people know from the show because the first movie bombed and they made the movie look more like the show.

it's almost uncanny valley with them

since we're talking specificallt about animation look at disney shows instead, lion king/Hercules tv series compared to their respective movies for example, animation quality is night and day

the same applies the other way around, making a movie out of an animated series, for prior art look at e.g. batman mask of the phantasm, not much different but still more detailed and expressive compared to the show
