I actually really like this because it's the one thing I think ponies as a race are naturally good at. Moreover, it encourages low-level games to be RP-heavy, which is totally a good thing.

So, every PC must choose one of the 6 elements as their...alignment? perk structure? what the hell does this do? does the requirement preclude the creation of "disharmonious" or evil PCs?

Speculate here with maximum autism.
>>
>>28825239
a goblin can be loyal and still be evil. I think it's meant as a weak form of alignment, not as a good and evil binary system, but just as a general indication of how your character acts
>>
>>28825239
>>28825295
Yeah, I think it's more setting the basis for a character's personality. It would probably give the GM an easy grounds on which to grant rewards for good roleplaying, too, since you can just boil it down to "is the character being loyal/generous/etc."

>>
>>28825358
Maybe they just mean magically studious/clever, in the way that a mage or wizard is a character archetype. Can a birdhorse or mudhorse have magic as their element, though? Would a Doctor Hooves science guy or an alchemist like Zecora fall under magic?

The other option would be "friendliness," of course, but all of those traits are kind of subsets of friendliness anyway. I guess cleverness is good enough on its own, though it's a bit redundant with the mind trait.
>>
>>28825420
yeah, other races in Equestria have magic. DYEWTS
>>
>>28825398
a poorly written orgy, of course

>>28825339
Makes sense until you get to Magic element (>>28825358 yeah, huh? what?) because a munchkin could make a case for why any action is "intelligent" or "clever" (which are synonymous with "magical", apparently)
>>
>>28825461
Despite Lauren framing earth ponies and pegasi as having passive magics, I don't think they've ever stated it that way in the show. And you're missing the point anyway; Doctor Hooves doing super science would be clever, but not magic.
>>
>>28825358
What has that ever had to do with friendship?
>>
>>28825492
I think that's the issue that's confusing a lot of us; apparently in this game the "element of magic" represents intelligence or "cleverness"...just not in the same way the stat does. I think we'll have to wait for more rulebook text to make head or tail of it.
>>
>>28825494
>>28825521
Equating it with a personality type is kind of hard. I always took "magic" in the element sense to be the je ne sais quoi of fellowship, like the magic "spark" you feel when you're hanging out with friends, but that doesn't translate well to any one particular trait. It's just something that arises from the group, much like friendship itself.

In this context, it's probably best to see the Elements as basic "good" personality traits, and not necessarily different friendship qualities. You might equate it more with studiousness or scholasticism than cleverness, which still provides a character niche and isn't terribly overpowered. Or maybe it's more of a leadership role: bringing everything and everyone together to work in harmony.
>>
>>28825494
>>28825467

A higher mind value lets characters pick up when other ponies are upset.

in this game emotional intelligence and cognitive intelligence is expressed by the same trait.
>>
>>28825656
Trait value isn't inherently linked to a character's chosen element, though. From the looks of things, a character can pick "magic" as their defining characteristic, and still be totally oblivious stats-wise.
>>
>>28825682

yeah, looks like something of an alignment than anything else.
>>
>>28824634
Not that anon, and I'm certainly not suggesting that Rarity isn't intelligent, but I'd think charm/charisma would be her thing.

She's listed in the charm section, yes. Not sure why the opening paragraph used her for mind.

>>
>>28826083
Maybe if you were playing D&D or something, it could be overwhelming at first. But Tails of Equestria is meant to be entry-level and accessible to young children. I think you'll be fine.
>>
>>28826083
don't be discouraged anon, the rules don't matter as much as having fun with friends

im being serious here too, the rules arent that important
>>
>>28826083
That's stinkin' thinkin' at best, and kinda misses the point of roleplay.

Nobody's meant to do "well" or "poorly", everyone contributes to a story that the group tells together with the Dungeon Master as the narrator.

Even in a really complicated ruleset, it goes like this:
>DM explains what's going on
>You say what you intend to do
>DM tells you to roll some dice and interperets them as the outcome of your action.

Now, add to this that the ToE ruleset is being playtested with actual, ungrown, semi-illiterate *children* in mind... don't be such a pussy. It won't be hard.
>>
>>28825974
Rarity's gift is actually *perception* (attention to detail), which, in this ruleset, uses the same stat as intelligence.

She has high Charisma, too, but that's more of a learned thing from aspiring to a particular culture. Remember that her special talent is gem finding, which would definitely be a perception or wisdom check in most rulesets.
>>
>>28826147
I've tried generic roleplay and it's always been hard for me to come up with anything. Ever since then I've lacked any kind of faith that I'd fair better in a game like D&D. But I dunno, the fact that this is ponies might make me interested enough to try.
>>
>>28826252

Fa/tg/uy here. Creativity takes practice, but it can also be helped out by restrictions. Too loose of a roleplay space can lead to choice paralysis, which chokes creativity.
General advice: try again with a different group. If ponies are your jam, then a pony RPG would be a solid bet as that interest should help you push through the block and find your own rp voice.

Hey, now. 4e's very well designed, though certainly not to everyone's taste.
Early D&D is quirky, but well-built and heavily tested. Moldvay Basic is the best, tightest version of D&D there is, with the possible exception of OD&D, but OD&D is so poorly explained by its books that you basically need someone who was there to help you figure out how to run it.
>>
>>28826784
Sorry, I didn't know how else to call it, but just ordinary roleplay without any kind of game or rules. Like, I'm a character and my roleplaying partner is a character, and we're interacting in a situation. For the most part, I didn't have much fun and my partner had to do everything.
>>
>>28826874

>>
>>28826874
Sounds like you would prefer see structure instead of freedom roleplaying.

>>28824606
I could run a game based just on the preview, but so far the mechanics are as simple as they have claimed they would be. Can give it a go, tho.
>>
>>28826874
I think that's usually called freeform roleplay. Traditional Tabletop RPGs usually have one Gamemaster and several players. The Gamemaster describes the world while the other players act as one character each.

You might find this easier than free form since you don't have to think creatively. The game master thinks up situations and you can just react to what happens.

This is if you are playing as a character. GMing is harder.

how do you run a low fantasy game in Equestria?

who are the bandits, and runty little evil monsters? Diamond Dogs are a good choice, of course, but what else?

also, how prevalent is violence going to be in the RAW, do you think? it's for little kids, you know, so would we have to homebrew something if they decided to soften it up a lot?

>>

>>
>>28827396
This is one of their OC monsters, the Mohawk. Honestly, I'm not digging it.
>>
>>28827563
The description sounds interesting

Introducing the first creatures we have created for the game – the Mohawk – an unruly, rebellious bird of prey attracted to loud noise and chaotic surroundings!

If its a low level monster it could make a good first adventure fighting them off from a loud party.

The hair color does not really work though.
>>
>>28827501
You can use griffins, buffalo, Yaks, changelings and other ponies for most enemy roles in low fantasy campaigns. Of course that's just mentioning races that we've actually seen in the show.

You could also use wild animal encounters where the players can resolve fights by either beating on the critter until it runs away or befriending/calming the wild creature down (unless of course you condone the act of ponies murdering animals in your campaign, but that really doesn't seem thematically appropriate).

Changelings MIGHT be too high fantasy for your tastes but the other races I mentioned could fill the roles of stuff like bandits or other such enemies just fine. Since griffins are greedy for example a gang of griffin bandits wouldn't be outside of the realm of possibility.

I would recommend mostly things like Craggadiles, Manticores and other such small mythical (but still somewhat mundane) creatures as enemy encounters in a low fantasy game. Also juvenile dragons aren't out of the question due to their greed and general dislike for ponies.

I'm really just spit-balling here.

Body – Mind – Charm
Very nice simplification of DnD stats.

Body= strength, constitution, dexterity
Mind= intelligence, wisdom
Charm= charisma

But while DnD stats are "fixed", those seem to be based on dices. Even if you have D20 strength you still can roll 1. Maybe Body stat is also TCHAC0 and Armour Class.
>>
>>28827698

Seems to be that way. Seems to be a simplified game that children are meant to be able to play as well. To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if spells aren't detailed and it's more of a "say what you want and roll" based. As so everything is more "forum" style instead of grid based.

Then again I like simple games where most of the work is made in the story and NPCs and detailing is key.

I personally like grid based D&D a bit less because of that and find those games lag a bit. Then again I have ADHD like a faggot.

I'm also unsure what purpose the pink circle in the top right is meant to serve.

Pony or not, I've been wanting to get into pnp but everyone elses seems to be an expert at these and its intimidating to try to join. But seeing that this is simple beyond even some starter pnp sets, this looks like it could be a good gateway drug.

Ah, okay. So the bold pink circle is for keeping track of your friendship tokens. The light pink bar is maybe stamina? (Still unsure what those other two words are in the bar, though). The box below talents looks like it starts with a "Q"; maybe "quirks", as either some kind of perk or flaw system.

>>28828240
No, Alessio mentions friendship tokens in the interview, which are little gems that you share for some purpose. He says it's some kind of reward system that you can spend points on. Presumably the GM will award them for completing adventures or just as RP rewards.
>>
>>28828265
Could stamina be action points per turn?

Alternatively you can always play on of the dozens of fan-made pony RPGs out there. You have a lot of choice.

Well, it's not like most ponies carry a lot of equipment at once, usually. But yes, in the video we can see that his daughter's character sheet has some stuff written on the back, though nothing printed. (Mind you, it's an earlier draft than what's in the book, but I wouldn't believe this to have changed too much.)

I expect more complex, textually dense character sheets to be player-made, as they often were for D&D.

All pony RP characters become lesbian by default.
>>
>>28830249
it starts a little bit after you get your cutie mark
>>
>>28824570
Something that kind of bothers me here: apparently all new characters start as school-age ponies?
>Starting pony characters normally begin with values of D4 or D6 for their traits, but as they grow from a young foal (colt or filly) into adult ponies, their traits will also increase to higher values - D8, D10 or even higher. Increasing the value of traits is explained on page 86.
That seems a little odd, considering all the example characters are adults, and the portrait templates are for adults. I guess a party of adult ponies would start at a higher level, then.
>>
>>28830261
Right, which means school-age ponies like Diamond Tiara and Apple Bloom.

1) "Good at agriculture" translates well to NPCs, not so much to RPG PCs with hero-level stats. AJ's ability to appul comes second to lassos and kicks when it comes to adventures.
2) All the strongest ponies we've seen have been earth ponies. The Apples and Pies in particular.
3) The system as suggested earlier this year involved a bonus to the body stat, plus a higher hit-die for either body OR mind (charm was not implemented at the time). So playing a smart earth pony like Doctor Hooves or Bill Neigh is completely doable.
4) The example they use for the "body" stat is Prince Blueblood, so your shit's just flat-out wrong anyway.

Interestingly the gms afinity for maps was brought up in twilights recent book.

Oh shit nigga we are gonna get maps of equestria with fucking scales.
>>
>>28846348
Yeah 3 stats really does not seem like enough.
Hopefully there will be enough feats and whatnot to customise skills a little more.

She's also a Pegasus, not an earth pony like .gif related.

this is shit already. I dont know who thought that bullshit was a good idea but it isn't.

Nah, she's exceptional in that area, probably has a higher die for it than normal fillies. Probably a d12 that will go up to a d20 when she's older for her body stat.

On that note, I wonder if the cutie mark has any effect on the stats of the character or if it's purely cosmetic.

It's probably just cosmetic, though you probably pick a talent at character creation to represent what your cutie mark/special talent is supposed to be.

Using dice as the physical number on the sheet which can be changed without erasing and re writing with a pencil?

If you look at the pony sheet, there are lines for your talent to fill out.

Actually it's for "Talents" plural. I'm assuming that talents are something you get on level up, like perks/feats that let your character do certain things.

I was proposing that you will probably get to pick one for free in character creation to represent your cutie mark.

Interestingly there's also a space for "Quirks" which presumably are personality flaws. I'm actually pretty interested in where the mechanics of this game end up going.

There will be oldlings alongside the newlings right.
>>
>>28853452
I hope so, not that it would be hard to make the other yourself if one of them is already in.

Oldlings vs Newlings would be a cool scenario to play.

can newlings change?

Probably not.

We really don't know, but if they still live in the same shifting hive it might be part of their nature.

Yes.

Rarity's special talent is gem finding, but she's also good at fashion and sewing.
>>
>>28858421
Any PnP RPG worth it's salt has to have some form of meaningful character progression mechanics. Otherwise it's boring.

I assume the deal here is that you start with 1 talent then as your character increases in level you gain more so your character can do more an better things.

If there's no significant character progression (and no, simply increasing stats is not character significant character progression, it's just higher numbers, higher numbers that are ultimately irrelevant because the encounter difficulty gets higher to match) then it gets boring really fast.
>>
>>28859777
True.
But then if talents are feats what does your arse mark do.

Maybe the game assumes your special talent is adventuring.

MY DICK SHALL BE SUCKED TONIGHT.

pretty excited, 2bh

The first talent entry has a "CM" next to it. I assume this means your first talent defines your cutie mark, or vice versa.
