I have always felt uncomfortable about stories with really escapist elements, that expect you to self-insert yourself. When I was in elementary and even middle school I would imagine myself and sometimes my friends living our regular lives but then traveling to another world to play games and eat food and fight and shit, just daydreaming and sometimes using the media around me to self-insert myself. After I got passed that stage I felt really embarrassed about it, so when I see elements such as "kid with shitty life gets pulled to cool world" like Harry Potter or SAO I get reminded of it and hate it. When I see stuff about anon on /mlp/, I actually don't see it as escapist because anon is a very distinct personality that is so far removed from my own, AiE is just funny stories with ponies. When people talk about going to Equestria after death, however, it is very much uncomfortable for me. Admitting to any feelings like this would be admitting weakness, as someone who wants to be as independent as possible that would be admitting that I need support, that I am still a child.

This story, much like any like it, just feels like it goes against my nihilist, ethical egoist beliefs of the harsh reality of life. Life is supposed to be logical like my computer, shit like this is like alternative medicine to scam the desperate and hurt, and in a way feels cruel compared to just telling them to enjoy their life because death is not something to fear, it is just as beautiful as life, for without death life has no purpose. Like bread that gets stale, the fact it gets stale is what gives bread beauty, it is what makes eating it now and savoring it so much more important.

The problem I see with escapist fiction is that it almost always fails to address the problem that your problems are mostly you, not Earth. Particularly, why would you suddenly become more charismatic once in Equestria?

One notable, and freaky for other reasons, exception is Friendship is Optimal.

I have self insert fantasies all the time; I have light dusting of Aspergers that makes communication with others difficult (social skills are there I just struggle to convey the subtext and meaning of what I'm saying), Bipolar that partial manifests as bursts of insomniac creativity and a general disdain for reality so i live a lot inside my own head.

Its why I run RPG's, its a great way for me to welcome people into my bizarre inner world that they can enjoy.

I used to think that. Then as I got older I realized how bullshit that notion is. Life, or the world rather, is only going to be as logical as the people in it. And the vast majority have no desire to be that way, people aren't going to think of things in the same terms as you. Life is a fucking mess and everyone is stumbling their way through it.
