But new pockets of changeling infestation continue to emerge every week. Some are carefully planted where they'll be most devastating to the ponies' forces, the lurking changelings waiting for their numbers to be sufficient to ambush and claim the area. Others are simply dropped seemingly at random like carpet bombs.

One day, a single egg finds itself chosen for the latter purpose... From hundreds of feet in the air.

That poor little egg can't possibly survive such a fall! ...Can it?

Massing all of your mental energy, you come to a conclusion about the leaf.
It is lying to you. You can see how blue your egg is just fine. Blue is a color, and you can see it. Therefore, you can see colors and the leaf is lying. You decide to exact punishment on the leaf by bravely leaving the safety of your eggy and trying to eat it.

But you were too foolhardy. You are now confronted with the terrible realization that the leaf tastes like something that is not a leaf. As your eyes adjust to the darkness, you are able to better analyze the changeling that mimics you. It looks like it's probably a male, with a nearly black chitin coat (a coatin?) and teal eyes and wings. You're not quite sure which way is left or right yet, but if you were, you'd say his left leg has three connected holes on it. His crest is taller than usual, and there's a lighter streak running over his right eye.

You approve of this changeling and ask him to accompany you. He requests the same, but he doesn't move until you do. He must be a hatchling that's unsure of what to do and where to go, too! You decide to be a good brother and invite him to follow you on your adventure.

After taking one last look around, you leave your eggy behind and set off into the unknown. Along the way, you pass the changeling that imitates you once more. You give them the name "Chops" because "chops" is a funny word, and your changeling brother will bring you smiles: invigorating ones in times of scariness and confident ones in times of success. After exchanging one last wave with Chops, you set off into the light.

The light is strange. It comes from some kind of glowing mushrooms along the walls of the tunnel. It isn't as bright as the light from up above, but it allows you to find your way easily enough. The floor beneath you changes from tree to dirt, which puts your mind somewhat at ease. Dirt is something you know quite well!

As you follow the mushroom tunnel, you hear voices up ahead. That takey feeling from before seems to pulse in response. It is strong, then weak. It feels like it's coming from your chest.

You're filled with fear once again. Not only is there something in your chest making noises, but there's something ahead of you making them as well! Usually noises don't happen unless you make them. This is a whole new dimension of possible scary things that don't taste good.

But your curiosity gets the better of you. You want to know what's making the sounds up ahead. Sticking to the darker side of the tunnel, you creep forward and get a better view of what's going on.

"N-no!!!" it yells, its body and voice throwing off fear like a frigid inferno. "Please!!! Somepony, HELP ME!!"

The anger in the big you's words is directed right at you. It fills you with fear.
But the scared creature is giving off something else now. Beneath all the fear, it's giving you faint wisps of something else. It's like... the opposite of fear. Not quite happiness, but something that might become happiness if... something happens. It stares at you with pleading eyes.

As the big you stares at you, it's lips curl into a cocky sneer. "Why don't you be a good child and help me instead? If you do a good job, I might just let you have a taste in exchange... What do you say?"

So, I've been thinking about this, and Maybe we should go uniquely crazy and start exclusively feeding on Changelings.
We could scare ponies when they see us viciously attack our own kind and we can attempt to seek out disguised changelings as our next meal, where they will be terrified, once we figure them out.

As you strike the big you, you realize two things. The first is that you're incredibly weak. The second is that you REALLY wish you'd figured that out earlier. The big you turns and fires a burning light from his horn. You shriek as it strikes you. Burning pain fills your tiny body, and the force of the magic beam sends you slamming into another wall. You taste something bad in your mouth. You're in great pain. You can barely even stand up anymore.

"It looks like my meal fled.," the big you says in a voice you REALLY don't like, "which means I guess you'll have to act as a replacement..." The big you opens his jaws for a few seconds, before shutting them. His anger flares up again. "What?! You don't have ANY love stored? You mean you, a newborn hatchling, decided to try and fight with ME instead of seeking out the first thing EVERY newborn changeling searches for upon hatching?" The big you shakes his head. "Ending your life is practically an act of mercy - if not for you, then certainly for the rest of changelingkind."

The big you's horn glows, and you feel that cold tingle creeping into your body one more time.

I've actually read most of Inept's quests before, and I've seen her use music from youtube in it before, and I've been wanting to write something for one of them for a while now.

I'll try not to make a symphonic metal version of the battle theme. Yet.

When composing chiptune/video game music, don't hesitate to use more arpeggios and reach a higher range, even to the point that it's very hard to play in real life, especially for fighting themes. Get quickly into the main melody and bring in all the instruments as soon as possible. In my opinion you should avoid slow buildups, unless you're making a long, full-fledged theme (Undertale only has one slow buildup as far as I remember, and it's for a song that is 6 or 7 minutes long).
You want to make sure your theme is easily recognizable as quickly as possible, and gets catchy - yet not too repetitive! - very fast. You can afford making it predictable though, you're writing vidya music, you're not trying to be the new Mozart and bring a groundbreaking, revolutionizing new genre of music to the world.
For examples, listen to the OST of Cave Story, Shovel Knight, or maybe Knytt Stories or VVVVVV. You can also try the Undertale OST, it would fit the UI of this CYOA.

Now that the scariness is gone, the pain from your fight with the big you soon begins to sink in. Your entire body hurts. You glance up at the food thing and chirp in pain, only for it to push its hoof against your mouth and say "Shh!". Is it offering you a bite of its hoofsie? Silly food thing, that's not how eating works!

Before you can tell the food thing the right way to feed you, it trots to the edge of the square tree and peeks around it. Fear pours off the food thing as it slowly pokes its head out and looks around the tunnel, before finally coming back and turning to you. The fear is now a little happiness.

"I think he's gone." the food thing says. "That was really a close one... If you didn't show up, I'd have been a goner for sure that time. Thanks, buddy." The food thing smiles and pats you on the head. From where it's touching you, a yummy warmth that's just a little sweet fills your whole body. The owies don't go away, but they do start to hurt a lot less. You chitter gratefully and rub up against the food thing. You can feel its happiness getting bigger. "I knew it." it says quietly. "I knew that there had to be nice changelings out there somewhere. I can't wait to see the look on Sil's face when I tell her about this...!"

You look up at the happy food thing and tilt your head. You chirp, making the food thing pay attention to you again. "Oh, sorry." it says, his happiness taking on a weird taste. It's kind of like how fear tastes when it hasn't really become fear yet. "I talk to myself a lot. Anyway, now that the coast is clear, why don't I introduce myself? I'm Soft Serve. What's your name?" It holds its hoof out to you again. You try to tell it again that that's not how eating works, but it doesn't seem to hear your chirp.

"Uh... Too bad there's not a lot of stuff we can do. Usually buddies go to the movies, or play games, or that kind of stuff. But there's not a lot of time for that anymore..."

A new feeling comes from Soft Serve, underneath the happiness. It's a cool, sort of salty emotion. It makes you think of the sea. Is this sadness? You're... not a big fan of it.

"But, that has nothing to do with you." Soft Serve says, trying to make more happiness. Does he know you like that better? Wow, he's really good at being a buddy! You think. "And either way, I can't just sit here mumbling all day. I have work to do. Although..." He steps closer to you and looks at your owies. "We're both hurt from fighting that creep back there." He thinks for a second. There's fear again, but then a seriousness pushes it out of the way. "Listen, there's some first aid supplies back at our base." he says. "Why don't you come with me; that way we can both get patched up? It's safer there than in these tunnels anyway, especially now that that other changeling knows we're down here."

It looks you over. You can feel a spike of happiness when it looks at your sides, but it makes himself angry again and shakes its head right after that. "I mean, *I* have to find a way across." it says. "You're hurt." Soft makes itself smile again, even though you feel very little happiness from it. "Just sit tight, Buddy. I'll figure something out."
