Lets see, shall we:
The fact that you blame all the loss of your original code on the computer, and not on you not using backups or version control; the fact that you blame the performance of the compiler for the shitty performance of your game, as opposed to the awful non optimised spaghetti code you fed it; the fact that rather than RTFM for Ren'py you'll bitch about not being able to immediately do something.

People have been able to build incredibly complex, stable, and well supported projects with each of the tools that you have, ultimately the only consistent issue you face is sitting in your chair.
>>
>>28792825
>The fact that you blame all the loss of your original code on the computer, and not on you not using backups or version control
Yeah and that's my fault.
>the fact that you blame the performance of the compiler
When? The only time I commented on the compiler was when an anon was complaining about his AV thinking it's a virus. In fact, I never commented on the performance.

More specifically:
>;DELIBERATE CRASH LOOPHOLE
>Function LoopHole()
> LoopHole()
>End Function

to quote the guy who found this:
>The piece of code I posted is meant to kill the program by constantly calling a method, which calls itself, which calls itself, which calls itself until it runs out of space in the stack, at which point the system goes "fuck you, program" and kills it. Most compilers for good programming languages see this sort of thing and optimize it away. The proper way to do it would be to actually exit the program properly. Or to find its process and end it. Also a statement called "assert" exists, where "assert false" would end the program abruptly. Basically there are a ton of ways of doing this in a way that isn't stupid.

Say what you like about MDickie, School Days on Android is one of the flat-out funniest fucking things I have ever played. It's weird sandbox gameplay can just do things so off the wall and the school setting just makes it funnier.

* One class, the teacher is right in the middle of saying something to us when a 14-year old girl stands up, they embrace and french kiss while the rest of the class sits there awkwardly for what seems like 5 minutes.

* Arriving home after a hard day, my mother stops me to praise me for buying cigarettes. My dad immediately walks in and berates me for speeding money on food then beats the shit out of me with a skateboard.

*A kid steals my guitar during history. Later on I spot him in the park and literally beat him out of the game with a baseball bat. The next day the Principal confides in me that he was a dick and good job.

That's just three examples off the top of my head. Seriously, download 'School Days' and give it an hour of play, I guarantee you will piss your pants.

Don't be discouraged, Gamefag. Anons are merely giving you their advice about the code because they want to see you succeed in the best way possible. If nobody cared, then you wouldn't be receiving this feedback.

Do whatever works best for you. As long as you enjoy what you're doing, that's all that really matters.

As much fun as I had in the last thread pistol whipping this guy about his Pajeet-tier engine (that might even be unfair to the average Pajeet) it really makes no difference since

>his art is crap
>his writing and general posting style would be cringey in an EqD comment section
>he refuses to accept advice on anything while begging for help with things he can't do
>he cries and goes limp in the face of the slightest criticism
>he doesn't even seem capable of understanding what he's being criticized for, even when it's explained to him in excruciating detail
>in the rare case he does understand, he just dismisses it as unimportant

It's been fun but a month from now this project will have gone absolutely nowhere and we all know it. Much better anons have tried this and failed before him. And posters like this one >>28796867 are kidding themselves and should probably go back to /r/mylittlepony.

I'm done taking my pot shots for the time being but if he makes another thread with anything less than a functioning demo with art, music, and mechanics in place I'm going to be right here to dropkick his dreams again because that's not making something for us, it's being an attention whore while dangling some ephemeral could-be in front of people's noses.

This looks like you ran it through an autoformatter and just went with whatever it spit out. It's even around 1600 lines, which is roughly what I got when I autoformatted the original version so I could see what it was doing.

It's definitely an improvement, but like I said in the previous thread, the whitespace is the least important of all the issues with the code. (Mainly because you can do exactly what you just did, and autoformat it to get something that's more or less okay.)

It's absolutely good that he's trying to make a game. And most of the feedback in this thread is not useful in the least (I'm referring to the many anons mocking the code in general, rather than pointing out specific issues and ways to fix them).

The main thing I fault him for is being too quick to discount advice. In the previous thread, several anons (including myself) pointed out specific issues with the code, and also explained why these were likely to be problems down the road. But he has consistently shown no intent to fix things.

Now, sometimes ignoring advice from random onlookers is 100% the right thing to do. The people working on a project naturally understand it better than anyone else, and can judge how applicable the advice really is. But in this case, where the developer has shown no understanding whatsoever of the reasoning behind the advice to clean up his code, his choice to disregard that advice looks less like a carefully considered judgment and more like aggressive ignorance.
>>
>>28798167
>This looks like you ran it through an autoformatter
That's exactly what I did

>But he has consistently shown no intent to fix things
But I kept telling you guys that I WOULD fix it once I was done with the game content. The art, BGIs, sprites are by far the hardest part and the most time consuming. I wasn't brushing off the criticism. I was just trying to say( which I obviously didn't do a very good job at ) that my top priority was the actual content of the game. Which is why I wanted to wait until it was done.

Please understand that I wasn't discounting the advice I was given. The engine simply wasn't a priority.
>>
>>28798278
The thing we are laughing about is the fact that you claim you have "10-11 years" of experience yet produce awful code that makes everyone's eyes bleed. Autoformatter improves things slightly but the bigger problems are your names (if you think foo is something that anyone ever uses in actual code, you've got serious issues), the amount of hard-coded values in the engine and the code duplication (refer too >>28793356).
These problems lead to code that is hard to understand and makes fixing bugs or adding features horribly painful.
With all that being said, it is true that the VN genre is fairly simple from the engine side and the content is obviously the main problem.

>I cleaned up the code
Did you want a sweetie? As other anons have said, it's obvious you've just run the code through an auto formatter, and haven't made any attempt to actually understand what the output of pylint is telling you. Some of the warnings it's giving you are fairly serious indications of just how big a clusterfuck your code is, and could have been fixed with even a minimal amount of effort, others whilst (potentially) less serious are obvious warnings that you have code that isn't doing what you expect it to do (or you enjoy defining variables and never actually using them). Putting in the bare minimum and then getting ass blasted about it isn't something to be proud of, and it certainly doesn't fill anyone (who isn't a fresh out of their mothers cunt white knight) with confidence.

Gamefag logic:
The engine isn't a priority, so I'll work on that first, and build everything from scratch. Instead of simply using ren'py, and actually working on the shit that I think is difficult first and then spend the five seconds required to Google a tutorial for the customisations I need to make to the UI. Also responding to any criticism of my work, no matter how unimportant *I* think it is takes precedent over everything else

Why do they not just go back to fucking EqD where all criticism is forbidden?

Why do these autists keep coming here and acting surprised that this isn't a candy-coated bouncy castle of nice headpats like the brony sites?

The original threads for Smutty's VN were ragefests from dozens of /mlp/'s most vicious individuals who were declaring it dead before it had even begun, and /mlp/ for the most part loved Smutty.

This guy gets the kindest reception ever (since the board has mostly lost its teeth) full of reasonable criticism and then after ignoring it for hundreds of post and anons losing their patience, he starts whimpering about his own fucking fursecution and these dipshits pop up like it's a blitz-era Berlin book burning.

Around here we hold things to a fucking standard. There are a dozen other sites where you can go for empty praise. Fucking christ

I said that I started programming when I was 12. That doesn't mean I programmed religiously everyday.

It's just when I first started messing around with code. It wasn't meant to imply that I had a lot of hard experience. I never implied that I did. Some anon asked when I first got into programming and I answered the question. Nothing more.

I've been drawing since I was 4. And yet my drawings still suck compared to some artist whom has been drawing for just as long.

I didn't create this thread. I've been working on the game.
And I didn't create the original thread for praise. I just wanted some help with the inking/vectoring.

So is this going to be an eroge or what?

Anyway, stop taking shit so personally and just use what's given to you, my dude. Ren'py is pretty time-honoured and I'm sure it's super robust, so if you just worry about that, you can focus on the content like you always intended, you know?
>>

What's your steam? I've made a few vn's and am currently building a few other types of games, some of which are in python. I know a few engines and have some exp with ren'py. I will add you and help out with what I can.
>>
Yo gamefag, as someone who want any type of new content I wish you good luck your endeavor.

I can understand the frustration of others though, considering that the web is now FILLED with tons of VN clones using renpy, not only KS, but tons of porn games too and akabur clones, it seems really really easy to use so I'm surrpised that wasn't your first course.

BUT if your shitty code works, well it works, screw the others, of course the writing and art is still left to do so it'll probably never be, but if you can know that I'll test your shit no matter what.

Now, has someone has said, what happened to the RTS guys?
>>
>>28799726
People are trying to point out issues before they become unsolvable, because they want to see a quality project. Dismissing it with "yeah dude fuck the haters!!!" is disingenuous, and you are helping no one with it.

I'm not sure you understand that this is how you improve at things. You have to know a problem's there, and be willing to work at it, before you can fix it.
>>
>>28799752
That would be correct in a correct environment.

However HERE the place is filled with smug assholes who will use every opportunity to take the piss at the guy, despite them doing nothing toward any project whatsoever. Why should he improve NOW, and not finish his thing and then see himself where to improve and patch things up?

If this was real life and the anons taking the piss were on the receiving end of the treatment, anyone sensible (and especially the short tempered ass on this board) would go "WELL FUCK YOU GUYS DO IT YOURSELF" and drop it.

I'm willing to ignore shitty code if it means we can have a finished product. Don't blame me if I don't condone your autism in the name of """"improvement"""".

Man, I haven't even been saying anything. That post you replied to was like, my second post in the thread, and the first one was just some words of encouragement. But blind praise is fucking stupid.

This isn't just smug one-upsmanship, you daft cunt. People are being serious because people here are serious about their hobbies and interests, ESPECIALLY if they believe porn is on the line. If they're taking the time to level genuine criticism, maybe it's because they actually believe he can get shit done, and want to see him do so, and they assume he won't collapse into a pile of jelly at the slightest blunt word.
>>
I dislike overly functional programming, but Jesus fucking Christ. This is a rough thread but it's appropriately rough.

I've done a couple hundred programs (mostly audio plugins). If Gamefag does a couple dozen programs, a couple dozen DIFFERENT programs not just the same thing over and over, he will get better at it.
>>
>>28799776
Um… I'm 48 and one of the best coders in the world in a REALLY narrow problem domain (pretty useless at lots of other stuff!).

Real Life IS like this. Loaded with unfair and petulant abuse. The difference is, if you're actually doing something good, it's not uniformly abuse.

In the real world if you try to do something big you get static that scales up with how high you're aiming. THEN if you actually manage to accomplish anything rather than just messing yourself, people also turn up who are rabid fans (not just encouraging, but who flip out over how good your thing is) and the hatas totally stick around.

Only when you learn to gracefully coexist with the harshest of critics and even listen well enough to comprehend what they want, do you get to build on the 'fan side' and develop that.

This doesn't mean bowing to every criticism, but failing to understand them is a big indicator that you're very early in your development.

Okay, that definitely was not the impression I got from the previous thread. You said things like "I always go back and clean up the code once it's done", so my understanding was that you intended to add any remaining engine features, and only then go back to clean up the code. This would, of course, be pointless, since the purpose of cleaning up the code is to make it easier to add additional features.

If you actually intend to clean up the code before adding the remaining features to the engine, then I think you've gotten the message and I don't have any problem with your plan of action. (I still think you shouldn't have written the code that way in the first place, but given that already happened, this is the best path going forward.)
>>
>>28799567
>>28799726
The RTS thread died out maybe a month ago and never came back. Supposedly the main dev was going to post a new one when the new build was ready, but that hasn't happened yet.

That's another project that could have benefited from using an existing engine, by the way
>>
>>28800380
EVERY project benefit from using an existing engine, using existing libraries. and using existing assets (if possible).

I know the thrill of doing everything yourself, that's what I did when I started programming. I literally spent 2 years of my free time creating a ray-tracing 3D engine in Asmx86. It was fun as hell but also fucking goddamn useless compared to existing engines.

Don't. Reinvent. The. Wheel.
... especially when your wheel has 100% chance of being slower, more fragile and with less functionalities that the one offered by guys who dedicate their lives to it. Not only that, but all the time you spend re-doing something available everywhere is time you aren't spending on what make your project different from the gorillions of other games.

Nice strawman. Never once has it been implied you can't criticize a person who makes things. Let me reiterate: criticism is beneficial, and harping isn't. Regardless, it's up to Gamefag to act on the criticism and prove his worth. Framing every anon who offers praise or encouragement as a full-blown whiteknight or hugboxer isn't a decent mindset. You will always be a newfag, and a transplant, leeching like a parasite off of a culture built long before you came here by better anons than yourself.
>>
has it occurred to you that the reason you keep getting flamed is that you keep arguing with us?

Right, right. I belong here just as much as you do. Generals are cancer. They are bumpfests, and as you mentioned, circlejerks.

>meanie head horsefuckers.
Who's sounding childish now? Why go to a general when I can enjoy the whole board with you and every other faggot who crosses my path?

>You will always be a newfag, and a transplant, leeching like a parasite off of a culture built long before you came here by better anons than yourself.
You're projecting so hard, it's embarrassing. We are both part of the culture, not parasites. Instead of looking at newfags as cancer, look at them as untapped potential, like I do. You're so focused on keeping a stale, insular little "sekrit club". Together, we can surpass what was built by better anons than yourself.

Don't get me wrong, board culture is vitally important. Teach it, don't hoard it.

Look, I'm sorry if I didn't take the advice given to me.
I didn't realize I was coming off as ignorant( which might be because of my own stupidity ).
I was just trying to give some context as to what I was planning on doing.

So can we try this again? Do you guys have any advice for me to improve the quality of the project?

The good ship "helpful advice" sailed a long fucking time ago. You literally had an entire thread where people gave you plenty of advice, and you proceeded to treat that like an Indian treats the designated shitting street.

No, Gamefag. There are no second chances. Welcome to 4chan. You're accomplishing nothing, and you're lingering in a thread responding to anons who told you what to do. Instead of shutting up and getting to work, you're attention whoring.

Does not fly. Do you understand? Do you comprehend?

What did I do now? I wasn't referring to the engine.
I switched to ren'py as you guys suggested just yesterday. It's not pretty, but I'm doing what I can.

It's people like the lot of you cum guzzling faggots bashing gamefag that are the reason artists today are such bitter, selfish cunts.

These people offer a legit contribution to whatever community they happen to make their art for, and assholes like all of you spew toxic shit at them.

It's no wonder so many artists have moved their shit to patreon, they're tired of fuckwads like you constantly patronizing them.

TFW he doesn't realise that patreon bases it's business model on the idea of patronage
TFW he doesn't realise that someone who engages in patronage is a patron
TFW he doesn't realise that the literal purpose of a patron is to patronise someone

Anon, what you need to understand is that when it comes to software architecture making changes becomes approximately exponentially more expensive (in terms of work hours) the later in the development you make those changes.
My concerns with your coding aren't that you don't use comments, but that your code lacks structure.
What is often a good approach is to seperate you code into modules, i.e. clusters of code that interacts strongly with itself but are only loosely connected to other clusters.
This will make it much easier to change something in the future (and you most likely will have to) because for example all the code for playing sound would be in one location and can be changed without having to change any of the other clusters for text or images.

To use the analogy of spaghettis what you need to do is not write on the spaghettis what their function is, but to take the noodles out of the pot and pull them apart on a table so there is a visible structure that can be understood without having to know the details of each noodle cluster.

All this may be fine now, but habits don't disappear overnight.
If you deliver code like this in a professional environment there's a good chance that people will yell at you, and not just over the internet.

>>28796060
Let me be blunt:
One of the reasons you're getting so much shit is because you keep engaging people who think you're a total faggot who won't ever deliver and just wants attention.
The only post you should have made in this thread should have been:
>"Yes, you will in approximately <INSERT RELEASE ESTIMATION OF THE FIRST CHAPTER HERE>"
There is no benefit to your project or it's reputation from you continually posting in this thread and you're simply not taking the standard precautions to avoid getting shit on.
