A few major differences off the top of my head:

1. No interaction with the moderators or janitors. They do their job in the background.

2. Massive change in overall tone. /r/mylittlepony is SFW and is 100x more hugboxy. /mlp/ is the opposite where you can basically say whatever the hell you want and the only risk is other anons telling you to kill yourself.

3. Community is huge. As mentioned moderators don't do much except for make episode stickies. /mlp/ tries to generate its own unique content usually based on the "board culture" rather than have discussions over art or hypotheticals or whatnot.

CYOAs aren't exactly considered roleplaying. Think of it more as interactive fiction. They're always led by a single anon who is the "storyteller", so they get a pass.
