A lot of professional artists are or have drifted away from pony. Ponies are still cute to draw, but essentially you're looking at a confirmation bias where people indifferent to the current direction of the show still like to draw cute horses even if they haven't watched an episode since season 3.

Drawfags that actively hate the show to the point they can't enjoy it on any level wouldn't continue drawing ponies - usually not even if you paid them.

I understand that it's good, formal character development when Twilight became a princess, or when Dash became a Wonderbolt, or when Rarity opened two boutiques in major cities without having the time to manage either of them, or when they blew up the tree house, or when all the changelings revealed their entire life's purpose had been a ridiculous lie that could have been fixed on a whim, or when Derpy quit being a "Where's Waldo" for the fans and developed a personality that would override anything any other fans wanted, or when everyone told Glimmer she'd "come so far" after only two episodes about her - one of which involved a relapse where she magically brainwashed the main cast of the show.

I actually sort of liked the prequels for the story/plot. I guess many people don't care for politics, but that's arguably the most important thing about the prequels and it's done well.

I clop almost exclusively to horse pussy (a tiny bit to human Sunset) and actual horse porn.
I love season 1 and 2 episodes most and love unicorn Twilight much more than alicorn Twilight. The whole show was just better then.
But I'll tell people to stop judging the new seasons so harshly and I do just watch it for "lol cute ponies" because its one of the only things that makes me happy.
I love Sunset, EG and Starlight. I think Starlight was a decent addition.
Also, Sunset is my waifu.

And as for Tirek, his plan of "I will eat the magic and then walk towards Twilight while shooting lasers" is the type of masterstroke genius that I'm sure will be just as good a second time. That is totally a villain that can come back and be reformed by good character development, and I'm excited for that too.

This show is taking us in so many places. So many pathways lay open! I can't imagine how we aren't seeing a massive influx of original ideas revolving around this stuff!

Villain motivations have always been pretty shit, mostly because it's a kids show. Making the night last forever and causing chaos are pretty groundbreaing arn't they? Lots of scenarios can take place in this type of show. One was reformed or turned back into her true self the other was locked in stone right after we saw them. Plus we hardly saw NMM and the conflicts of the episode were from the things in the everfree, she didn't do anything. I'm not really sure what you want for the villains, I'll assume that you want recurring characters with good plans/motivations. Only one of those can happen due to this show needing to promote their message of friendship always winning in the end
