My Little Punny: Friendship is Tragic (a very grumpy CYOA)

Last time, Holiday woke up from her least restful night of sleep all week. Fitting, considering it lead into this, the final day of her quest, and also her favorite day of the year: Hearth's Warming Eve.

Realizing that it's now or never, Holiday set out to explore Hallow's Shade in search of a friend. But with most of the batpony residents asleep during the daylight hours, Holiday had few options available. One was the convenience store run by Polly Phase, a mare who seemed like she just didn't sleep, period. Despite her appearance, however, she was lucid enough to not only answer Holiday's questions about the townsponies, but also advise the struggling unicorn on where she may have the most luck finding a friend: Aside from Polly herself, who could offer Holiday a shoulder to lean on and an ear to listen to her problems, Holiday's best bet might just lie with Brownie Bite, the jubilant young bat mare who'd welcomed her to Hallow's Shade and carried her to her father's hotel to spend the night.

But even with a prime candidate like Brownie in mind, Holiday has just over 12 hours left. Will that be enough to earn the friendship she so greatly needs, for the sake of both her citizenship and her cold, black heart...?

Polly sticks her tongue at Holiday and chuckles. "Believe it or not, I DO take some holidays off. Hearth's Warming Eve just so happens to be one of them; I'll be closing up at 6 tonight and then opening again tomorrow morning."

Holiday nods, frowning a bit.

Polly grins and nods. "Aisle 13, display 4, row 2."

Holiday follows the signs to where Polly directed her, taking note that the signs and shelves are wooden instead of metal. It's almost like Polly had everything in the store custom made.

Soon, Holiday comes to the hats and scarves she sought. Conveniently, their shelves are located right above one another. And the selections available are quite nice, not chintzy bit store shit like Holiday expected.

Holiday weighs all of her options carefully, not wanting to get something too flashy or that might offend.

Satisfied with her choice, Holiday brings the selected scarf up to the counter for Polly to ring up.
"That'll be 23 bits." she says, punching a few buttons on her cash register. "Would you like it gift-wrapped?"

"Gift wrap is fre-eeee~" Polly responds in a singsong tone.

Polly takes the scarf and ducks behind her counter for a minute, and then she presents Holiday with a pretty little Hearth's Warming present.
"Here you go!" Polly says cheerfully. "Good luck with Brownie; if you need anything else, be sure to let me know, or just come back!"

Holiday leaves the store with her gift in tow, returning to the nearby inn without issue. Since it's only around noon, there's nopony else awake yet, so Holiday just returns to her room and turns on the lights.
That's when she sees something on the bureau beside her bed that she must have missed when she woke up.

Holiday inspects the assortment of goodies that she assumes Brownie Bite left for her. There's a vase of delicious daisies that are a bit droopy, and a plate of cold yet delicious smelling brownies. Beside the coffee maker is a small box containing a miniature jar of Prench roast, two different kinds of teabags, and about a half dozen cream cups and sugar packets. But what catches Holiday's eye the most is probably the note. It's a folded piece of paper adorned with a mistletoe border. A small smiley face is scribbled on the back of it. Taking a brownie and putting on a cup of tea, Holiday opens the note. Brownie's writing is thankfully legible... well, mostly:

'Dear mystery girl,
You were asleep when I came back, so I put the (basket?) on you and left you some brownies on the dresser! There's also tea, coffee, and a (nimbler?) in the fridge. If there's anything else you need, don't (hirsute?) to ask! I'm in 2A if you need me. Hope you feel better tomorrow.

At the bottom of the note is something else that's been scribbled upside down, and in a different color ink:

She takes a deep breath, and she raises a hoof to knock.
"...Nnnnh, one second..." Brownie's voice mumbles from within.
Holiday hears the rustling of sheets, and then the slow clop of hoofsteps. Then, the door creaks and swings open...
"Mmmm, yeah Papa...?" she moans, yawning. But then she realizes who knocked, and she immediately perks up. "...Oh, it's you...! Did you sleep okay...? Did you like da brownies?"

Holiday quietly smirks at the back of the undoubtedly flushed bat's head as she carries the carafe to the room's attached bathroom and fills it. The silence starts to get awkward, though, so she asks about more of Brownie's decor.

"Y-yeah!" brownie calls back over the running water. "I got it from a friend at da store; she's a big puzzle fan, but she couldn't solve it. I could, dough: I solved it in 46 seconds!"

"Tanks! It's one of Buzzsaw's blades from da Sawed movies. Dey're my favorite scary movies!" Brownie puts the water on and gets a couple of cups. "Except da fifth one. Dat one stunk."

The pain in Holiday's chest starts to swell again. She tries to stifle it by blocking the more painful details from her mind, and her explanation.

Brownie nibbles thoughtfully on her wing as she listens. "How you gonna do dat?"

Brownie smiles uncertainly. "Ya... ya mean Hallow's Shade, right?"
>"Ah, yeah. This town. It's been pretty nice compared to where I was from. And besides, the town greeter left a good impression on me."
Holiday winks to Brownie, making the bat giggle. "Ahhh, go on."
A small chuckle escapes Holiday's mouth. She realizes that the time is right: After this much friendly chitchat and a gift, the dopey bat is now vulnerable to physical affection. Holiday narrows her eyes and focuses her energy, hoping against hope that she doesn't do this too strongly. She slowly yet surely raises her hoof, and then thrusts it forward. She is going for the boop.
But in a fraction of a second, control is lost. Her technique was too sloppy. Brownie's eyes glint with realization, and a wing flies up in the path of that hoof, blocking the boop. Time seems to slow to a crawl as Holiday's eyes widen, a terrible realization filling them as Brownie's shy little smile widens into an arrogant smirk. Her pajama-clad hoof rises around that wing like Leoneighdas's spear around his shield, and with that very same deadly accuracy, Brownie launches her hoof at Holiday's face. She's going for the killing stroke.
"Boop!"

The second after Holiday is struck, her eyes go wide and blurry. Brownie's flawless technique makes the hapless unicorn's world spin. Her body is unable to handle such a swift and precise blow, and Holiday's eyes roll back and she falls to the floor with a thud. Her tongue lolls out of her mouth.

Brownie cackles triumphantly. "Dat's what happens when you try ta boop da former Baby Booper champion of Hallow's Shade four years running!"
Holiday breaks kayfabe enough to crack an eye open and chuckle up at Brownie.

Brownie smiles down proudly at Holiday. It's a genuine, heartfelt smile, the kind given by someone who greatly appreciates any little compliment she gets.
It reminds Holiday of the smile Gutter Pup gave her when she complimented his birdhouse-painting skills.
