That's your opinion. I think it's best to use ones we are already familiar with. Good for allusions and crap. Like how Ishi used the pheonix to symbolize Sunsets rebirth as a new person like a Pheonix rebirthing itself.
I'm sure they could do more cool crap like that. Plus, I just love greek/Roman mythology.

I think it would be cute if they did something with the squonk, a critter from stories in the Southern States. Basically a piggish creature that's soooo ugly that it constantly cries and bemoans it's wretched appearance, and if it saw it's own reflection, it's tears would turn it into a puddle. Perhaps something with Rarity befriending one and helping it feel good about itself.
