if you have garbage headphones you wont hear a difference. Normally I just get flac if I really like something and don't want the audio to degrade faster over time. mp3 is perfect for my listening conditions. it'd be neat to go to a place where they can both afford and set up a sound system to take advantage of higher bitrate audio.

Well, I have relistened to old cds I got in wav and mp3s from them, now that we supposedly have "hd audio" devices, and I don't notice difference.
Maybe you need a sound system of $500 or more to hear differences?
I do admit, that it is easy to distinguish from $10 bucks headphones to $50, but more than that, I don't really notice anything.

There's also the problem of FLAC is pretty much useless unless you have it ripped from the DAT Tapes (or any other lossless audo not called FLAC), mostly because GIGO applies to the whole thing, half the fucking FLAC shit out there is basically on the same level as MP3s because lossless audio for CDs hasn't been used in years.

And yes I've heard tales of morons who said they could hear a dog whistle as more than a hiss, and deny GIGO.
