The barren wasteland was a perfectly valid reason to not to want to fuck around with the timeline. That, I accept without question. Similarly, I would have been fine if Glimmer accepted it as reason to give up her beef with Twilight in particular - a vengeful quest only taken up after Twilight mucked around with her first endeavor.

What I don't understand is why Glimmer completely abandoned her ideas about the potential of a society not dependent on cutie marks and personal magic in the first place. That had no bearing on the wasteland.

What was not proved is that there was no room in the world at all for a society not dependent on cutie marks. Glimmer jumped all the way from one extreme ("my way is absolutely right") to another extreme ("Twilght's way is absolutely right") when the evidence was simply not there to back up either conclusion.

To extend your gas example, if I didn't think gas was flammable and got burned by it, I wouldn't say "I am never touching gas again!" I would say "I am going to put this gas into a useful container where it can be a productive asset to me, because there are clearly some times when it is bad but some times when it could be good."

Glimmer wants to make friendship a more core part of her cause? Sure! No issue at all. But she would still have her fundamental cause - something she just dropped at pure random in the show. Hell, I'd have loved to see her stick to her ideological guns while at the same time trying to draw ponies to her side with friendship and sociability, rather than brainwashing and forcibly ripping off their marks.
