The doors open. There's quite a few vehicles here. A large transport vehicle, and three smaller ones. One vehicle goes around the outpost to get Pyrite. The transport vehicle opens it's doors, and an armed pony steps out and starts walking to you and Patches.

>"L said you requested a weapon. Here it is."
>Patches: "Thank you."
>"You're welcome, Captain."
He salutes and walks back to the transport, helping the team load their things into it.
Patches now carries something that looks like a metallic ice cream cone.
"What's that?"
>Patches: "A unicorn weapon. Hopefully we won't have to use it."
Sea Foam starts to climb into the vehicle, but stops and turns to you.
>SeaFoam: "You promised to return safely, so I'm going to hold you to it, okay?"
You smile at her.
"I count on it."
She returns your smile, but you can see the worry in her face.
After one last big goodbye, the doors to the vehicle close, and they set off.
Within a minute, they're out of sight.
You and Patches return into the base.

It's quiet. The sounds of the icy winds flowing past the outpost are the only noises you can hear.

He heads into to the storage room, and you go to Mera.

"Of course. We're only going to be here for another day."
She looks back to the TV.

If I recall correctly the area is snowstorming worse than normal or something, so we should probably try to go out during a lull. Weather reports would be useful for that. Other than that, our plans are to go there, Patches guards us while we talk to the sphere, we get out.

You hop into the nest.
"It's where we can rest. See? It's all kinds of cozy."
Mera gets up and curls next to you.

You look at Patches.

You pat next to you.

You pat the mattress faster.
He smiles and rolls his eyes before getting into the nest with you two.

The lights in the rec room nearly go out.

The lights turn off.
Mera nuzzles into your back.

She closes her eyes. You can't really see her, but you can feel that she's gone to sleep. Huh, controlling when you fall asleep would really have come in handy when you were in college.
You grasp onto Patches, putting your arm over his chest.
"You better cuddle properly."

"Mhm."
>Patches: "How do I do that?"
"Just follow my lead."
Eventually, the rise and fall of his breathing soothes you off to sleep.

A massive pillar of steam towers over the frozen landscape in the distance.

The transport car shakes violently as if it crashed into something.

Patches looks around the window.

You peek out. The barren ground has changed to small protrusions of hard ice, like stalagmites. The transport's heavy treads break through them easily, but the car shakes as it drives over the broken remains.

You continue to drive towards the pillar of steam.

He leads the way. The ground is far easier to walk on than before, and not as steep either. The ice should be slippery, but it's rough, letting your hooves have traction.

You continue walking. The tunnel ends, but the steam is so dense that you can't see too far ahead in the larger cave.

She nods.
You get the feeling that you're being watched again.

Alright so here's what I'm thinking is going on here. The sphere and/or Bayneu is something inert. Like an eldritch horror that's an egg, or was something more but is now more like an egg. It itself is not inherently negative or evil, but there is some sort of species that wants to use it for it's won end. What this species wants is hard to say, but they are almost certainly the ones who have trying to attack us.

So what do we need to do? I would suggest we try and cut off Bayneu from their influence. I suggest we talk to it and try to get it to leave the planet. It will only harm ponies here.

Talk to Bayneu. Suggest to it that there's nothing to be gained here. Ask it to leave so it won't hurt other ponies.

If worst comes to worst, offer to go with it. Be willing to sacrifice ourselves so that everyone else can live.

A flash of brown passes in front of you and the creature lets out a sort of guttural sequence of clicks. Underneath that, you hear a crunching noise.
Mera.
It falls to it's side, but quickly gets back up, limping on one leg.
Mera stands in front of you, getting between the creature.

She looks to the sphere.

You look back and see the creature standing there. Two more of them step to it's side. They unfold large slender wings from their lower backs.

She runs up the tunnel, but begins to slow down. You start to hear a clicking noise in the distance.

With a crack of the wings, she jumps forward at an incredible speed, making you hold on as hard as you can.
Suddenly, you're outside in the snow covered world.

She turns her body sideways and slams into transport vehicle. You fall off her back as she slumps to the ground. The transport vehicle's side is dented inwards.

One thing I was considering was making a hole in the ground with one, or maybe a wide ditch? To trip it, or otherwise make movement difficult for it. Tho depending on how big it is, it might not work.

I would also like to point out that it probably only tolerates so much heat, and that the tool in question is more for melting/burning rather than "heating". You wouldn't hatch chickens in a smelter, for example.
