While /mlp/ is not as fast as it used to be, for 4chan standards it's a fast board.
To say more - it's a containment board for a quite specific yet popular topic that's universally hated by a considerable amount of people across the whole site.
Compared to other boards - activity on /mlp/ is pretty "light". We mostly write greens and use static images which, given the fact the show is made in Flash, are very easy to store.
There's also a lot of users on /mlp/ who come to 4chan solely because of this board.

So, essentially - removing /mlp/ means cutting down an active board that has the "actual traffic on the board/costs to sustain" proportion on a very high level and has tendency to bring outsiders to the site effectively increasing ad revenue much more effectively that you would expect from a board of such size - given it actually brings new people who are much more likely to click/at least not block ads simply because they aren't used to them on this particular site.
And finally - deleting a containment board will result in a backlash and no amounts of bans will be able to prevent it. So, for like about a month "the first month of /trash/" will be observable pretty much everywhere. It will calm down eventually, but it won't do 4chan any good. Even the most reasonable people (aka the silent majority) who had already stopped caring about ponies due to not having autism to care about it for six fucking years straight, are likely to stop visiting 4chan for a while - to wait for things to calm down, resulting in a huge traffic decline.

Meanwhile, the only real motivation for the board deletion is "god, I hate ponies".
