Deus ex machina generally refers to a situation where the writers write themselves into a situation where something can only be solved by something completely out of left field, ie a god clicking its fingers and making everything go away.

You're refusing to consider how this didn't.
One, given they were close to the docks, it was obvious beforehand that there was another cause as to why they capsized. The sandwiches going overboard were also referenced in each story, and were considered and investigative point by Twilight.

This was not a deus ex machina. Everything that happened in the story led up to that particular thing happening. "unexpected" does not equal "out of nowhere". Twilight figured it out based on the elements of the story. Besides, the monsters presence didn't solve the issue of the story, which was all about bias perspective.

I sure wish people could think for five minutes before mindlessly posting.

Once again, considering the time constraints and all the elements involved in the circumstances. design something that you would consider better fitting.
