>Recap: You are Parcel Song, Delivery Birdhorse. After inadvertently getting co-oped into an investigation of disappearances in Hollow Shades, you found yourself exploring the town with one of your new friends/squadmates, a unicorn archer named One Shot. Upon delivering him and yourself to the top of the great tree, you tracked down the courier (and One the bar), where you learned that magic cannot solve your current problems of a damaged parcel that has lost its way. You did, however, deliver a letter and meet a rather... unique shopkeeper and part-time adventurer (or was it the other way around?) that did not let little things like having no legs deter her from her goals. Goals such as hunting down a long lost treasure somewhere in the Shades, and being unusually forward with every delivery birdhorse she meets.

>You have just finished your letter delivery and stand on the topmost boardwalk running around the great tree.

>Going by the position of the sun, you surmise it to be daytime.
>Never really learned how to discern much more than that, but it's certainly a start.
>Standing outside Hidden Treasures, you can see the bar One lumbered into, and beyond that the closed up shop you passed earlier on your way to the Courier.
>Which reminds you, the courier shop mare mentioned she'd pay you for your minor services delivering that letter two stores away, as well as potentially having more jobs in the future.

>Several denizens of the Shades wander about on their own business, much as yourself.

"No, I lost him to the bar before we even got there," you respond, rubbing your bumped muzzle.
>"Oh, really? Huh, he didn't look the type. Oh well."
"But yeah, Hidey's a pretty mare. ...Pretty, uh, pretty cool, I mean."
>The courier mare giggles a bit.
>"Yeah, she has that affect on ponies. Mare is like, a shining beacon of sunshine and optimism around here, especially lately. Little strange, I suppose, but then again that's pretty much the norm around here."
"Yeah, yeah..."
>You trail off a little bit, losing yourself to a whirlwind of thoughts about all the mares you've met today.
>Strangely quarrelsome thoughts, actually.
>What if Hidey's not the right choice? The mailmare here is pretty cute, but there's also Fulgy, who despite her coarse exterior surely has a caring motherly nature beneath. But then again, she has legs. ...Is that a positive or a negative? Yesterday you would have been certain, but now...
>"You alright there? You're staring pretty hard at that lamp."
"Hm? ...Oh! By the way, I don't think I ever got your name. Or gave you mine, so let's do that. Hi, I'm Parcel Song, best delivery bird this side of ...whatever it is we're to the side of, I guess."

"Oh yeah, plenty! It's a whole 20 bits more than my last job paid!"
>Express loos confused. "You didn't get paid for your last job?"
"Nope!" you respond excitedly. "Technically it's a current job, delivering that package I brought in earlier."
>"I see..."
"By the way, and this is totally unrelated to anything, but do you know what Hidey likes, as far as dates go?"
>Express gets a sly look.
>"Hmm? Why would I know anything like that?"
"I dunno, just a quest-"
>"Okay, so check it out."
>Express walks to the back wall and pulls down a chart from somewhere underneath the shelf.
>"Hidey's the sort of mare that appears to like just about everything, based on her overtly positive attitude. This makes it difficult to really pin down exactly what she's into, obfuscating her true interests in a haze of blinding optimism. But I have found from careful observation performed covertly during deliveries, that above all else, she seems to enjoy trips into the caves surrounding Hollow Shades. Doing what, I have no idea, but it's definitely one of her interests. I have a few theories, based on her cutie mark and chosen profession, but nothing concrete."
>You boggle somewhat at the load of information being dumped on you, and as a result are unable to stop the next wave.
>"Now, as for |your| attributes, I don't have that much data yet, since we've only spoken twice now. But you seem to be the honest type, maybe a little naive, which isn't an inherently negative trait. I won't ask about the origin of your markings, but they give you a rather unique look, one that I think goes well with Hidey's, er, let's just call it her style. So I think you two have at least a 75, maybe 80% chance of forming a relationship, and would make a totally cute couple. And that's just going off what I know so far."
>Express kicks the wall as she walks back to the counter, causing the chart to retract with a resounding [fwip].

>"So, did you need anything else?"

"Wow. That's quite the chart you have there. Or charts, I guess."
>"Oh, thanks. It's something of a hobby, I guess. I see a lot of ponies and other folk come through here- some staying, others going- and sometimes I think 'I bet those two would go great together'. Heck, a few even come to me for help on who I think they should get with."
"Seems like it comes naturally, to me."
>"Does it? I mean, I'm no Princess of Love that can just cheat her way to happy relationships with magic, but I do my best. Most of the matches I've made have come away from things happier, so it's something, I suppose."
"So, do you have a chart for everyone in Hollow Shades?"
>"Everyone I've seen and met enough to get a read on, yeah."
"Even yourself?"
>"Oh, of course! That was chart #1!"
"Can I see it?"
>"Uh, no."
"Dang."
>"No offense, Parcel, but a mare's gotta have some secrets, you know?"
"Well, how about One Shot? Anything on him?"
>"Not much, since I've talked to him less now than I have you. Haven't had the time to make up a chart yet, either, but I'll get to it soon enough."
"That makes sense, I guess."
>You pause a moment to think about things, mostly the fact that you apparently have not only a greater chance at Hidden than zero, but one in the upper percentile at that! At least, according to this mailmare you just met.
>That and getting paid makes the day turn out even better.
"Hey, I just thought of something." You produce the banged up package again. "I know I can't open this package because that goes against every code the delivery pony lives by, but you have any idea what might be in it? Like, as a guess?"
>"Not really. Despite how banged up it is, it's packed pretty well. Seems moderately heavy, though, and it shifts a little when it moves, so it's probably a single, smaller dense object."
"Any idea where I might be taking it?"

"Really? Did you find Lorem Dipsum?"
>"No, I didn't. There are no residents by the initials L.D. anywhere in Hollow Shade's living registry, pony or otherwise."
"Oh..."
>"Of course, the official index doesn't account for any of the residents that live in the scattered about out in the Hollowed Wood; only those living in Talltree and the surrounding grounded homes. But with the Wood as dangerous as it is now, I can't recommend you go searching for any of the unlisted residents, if any of them are even out there anymore..."
>A somber tone overtakes the small shop as the silence lingers.
"Well, I better get going. I need to see if One's the good or bad sort of drunk."
>"Oh, yeah, okay. Sorry for bringing things down. I know I don't really |actually| get that close to the ponies that live around here, but I know so much about them I hate to see any of them lost to… whatever's going on around here."
"I can see how that might feel. See you later."

>Eventually, the runes flicker away, and One turns back to you.
>"So with them taking care of most everything, that leaves us free to chill here for as long as we want. And seeing as how this place is apparently open sunrise to sunset due to the curfew, I know what my day plan is going to be."

>You give One a mildly displeased look.
"So, what happens when you |don't| drink?"
>"I feel like I'm wasting valuable time I could be spending drinking."
"Is that your only hobby?"
>"Well, no. I also like to shoot arrows at things, I suppose. But that may be more of a job description now that I think about it."
"Speaking of jobs, do you have any real plan for the mission? Or are we just going to wing it when we get there?"
>"Parce, I am the wingin-est pony that ever didn't have wings. My plans usually involve isolating the threat and then shooting arrows at it until it stops being a threat."
"That seems simplistic."
>"It's worked for most problems I've had so far. If you want anything more in-depth than that, ask Fulgy. She usually likes to take things slow and careful, which I guess comes from being the defense specialist."
"Hm. Have you even asked anyone about the forest yet? That package I'm delivering might actually go to someone that lives out there."
>"Oh yeah? Didn't think anyone lived out there. And no, I haven't. But I haven't really had the time to grease the wheels around here so much."
>Your stare intensifies.
>"Alright, alright. Plenty of ponies and otherwise in here to ask, so take your pick."

This, but get intimidated by the zeeb's urban demeanor and talk to those pink and blue qts instead

"Think I'll go check with that zebra and his friend first."
>"Alright, sounds-"
"And then I'll check with the pink and blue mares over there."
>"Okay, sur-"
"And then I think I'll go find Fulgy and find something to spend these bits on."
>One pauses to make sure you're not about to say anything else.
>"Sounds like you don't even need me, do ya? You know where I'll be if you do."
>Finishing your drink, you walk over to the recessed booth in the back wall.

>"...And so she says to me-"
"Pardon me, I don't mean to interrupt your date, but do you two know anything about what's going on in the forest?"
>Both the zebra and pegasus stare at you for a moment.
>"Bird dude says we're onna date, Blue," The Zebra says to the pegasus in a moderate Jahaycian accent.
>"Pff, what? Is that what this looks like? I mean, don't get me wrong Zar, you're beautiful, but I don't think you're my type."
>"Comman, too exotic for you?" The zebra flexes his forelegs jokingly, and the pegasus laughs.
>He turns to you once the laughter dies down. "Sorry, bird dude, I don't know much about this place yet, I'm relatively new about here."
>"You've been here two years, Zarik," the pegasus clarifies. "I don't think you can say you're new anymore."
>"Sure, but itsa good excuse for why I don't ever know nothin."
>"Well if you'd ever pay attention to the things happening around you, you might."
>"Why should I, when you pay enough attention for the botha us?"
>The two laugh again.
"I'm looking into the disappearances that have been happening lately. You guys know anything about that?"
>The pegasus perks up. "Oh, yeah, I heard about that stuff! Crazy goings on around here, apparently."
>"Ponies all up inna panic over a few missin folk, if ya ask me. They's probably just goan to the store."
>"That what you told your wife before you moved here?"
>"Why, she here?" The zebra looks around in mock worry, before the two break down into another bout of laughter.

>You look at the zebra with a perplexed expression.
"You left your wife to be here? Are you sure you two aren't dating?"
>All the mirth leaves his face, replaced by confusion of his own.
>"No, I never had- that was a- I'm not..."
>The zebra's sputtering causes his friend to break down into hysteric laughter once more.
>The zebra turns to him in annoyance. "Dude, shutup!"
"I mean, I thought this was a gay bar, isn't it? I don't judge where ponies ship their packages, but I just assumed..."
>The blue pegasus abruptly stops laughing, and the two look at you.
>After a moment the zebra turns to him and talks somewhat quieter.
>"Blue, you din't bring me to a gay bar again, did ya?"
>"...Pffffffaahahahaaaaa!"
>The pegasus is overtaken by laughter again, harder than any previous, while the zebra crosses his forelegs and pouts in irritation.
>"Oh, whatever."
"I mean, if it's relationship troubles either of you are having, I know this great shipping mare that can-"
>"No!" the zebra almost shouts in exasperation. "No, just- we're fine. We don' need no help, please."
"Alright, well if you change your mind, or learn anything about the disappearances, come find me, okay?"
>"Don't worry," the zebra responds, no longer very relaxed, "we will."
>"...Take you to a gay bar again, haha, oh boy…"
>Leaving the two to their devices, you turn and walk the few steps necessary to approach the two mares at the table nearby.
>The two notice you before you can speak.
>"Well you're an interesting looking guy," the pink pegasus remarks.
>"Cute squirrel, too," the blue earth mare adds.
"Thanks, we get that a lot. I'm wondering if either of you know anything about the disappearances in the forest. I'm part of an investigation."
>Both of them suddenly become rather morose.
>"No," the pegasus replies, "We don't know anything about that."
>"Candy…" the earth mare directs to her friend, "he might be able to help us find Misty."
>The pegasus averts her gaze. "I don't know..."
>>
>>28565768
"Misty? Did she vanish at night?"
>>

Well before be give the wrong impression we must clarify that we recently arrived in town and are gathering information. There's no promise we'll find this misty pony, but any information could certainly be useful towards that.

Also, their butts must be either pretty soft, or the floor isn't as hard as it looks for them to be sitting on it.

"Is Misty a friend of yours? Did she go missing in the woods at night?"
>The pegasus continues to avoid both of your looks, even as the earth mare prods her shoulder.
>"Candy, come on."
"I know this might be hard for you, but I think I can help. I'm with a group of trained professionals that are investigating the disappearances."
>You overhear One Shot talking to the bartender behind you.
>"Heyy… you know, I got a friend who has your face... on his butt."
>You retain your focus on the current task.
"...Trained professionals. Anything you might know could help."
>After a lengthy silence, the pegasus finally sighs.
>"I just… I don't want to get my hopes up again. She's been missing two months. We were just starting to move on..."
>"We would at least know for sure if they found anything," the earth mare notes.
>"I guess…" The pegasus sighs again. "Her name is Misty Moors. She's a green unicorn with pink hair, and a foggy dock for a cutie mark."
>"She went missing about two months back," the earth continues, "when she went into the woods one night looking for fishing bait."
>"We tried to warn her not to," the pegasus picks up, "told her about all the ponies disappearing, but she insisted she'd be fine and had done it hundreds of times before."
>She concentrates hard on her drink.
"...She never came back."
>>
>>28566268

She has done it a lot of times before? Did she do it really often, like once a week? If so it might give us the exact time the disappearances started occurring. There's an off chance that the disappearances are linked to the town. Anything else important happen here 2 months ago?

"I'm sorry to hear that. Do you know where she was going? Did she take anything with her?"
>"She usually spent most of her time around Starshine Lake," The pegasus says. "But we searched everywhere we could in the area for almost a month during the day, and all we found was her fishing rod, discarded in a ditch. It's as if she just completely vanished."
"How often did she go out there?"
>"During the days, at least twice a week," The earth mare replies. "She has a small boat she liked to take out to spend most of her time on the water, when she wasn't hanging out with us."
"And at night?"
>"She only really went at night maybe once or twice a month. We never went with her then, and actually got her to stop once the disappearances started, but the last time she went she was adamant about it since she hadn't gotten to go in so long."
>"If I had known this would happen I would have tried harder…" The pegasus says, despondent.
>"Candy, please don't blame yourself for this, there's no way we could have known."
"Did anything else important happen around town two months ago?"
>The pegasus remains silent, so the earth mare answers.
>"No, nothing that hadn't already been going on. The disappearances started about a year ago, and kept getting more frequent as time went on. Misty was just another tally mark on a growing statistic."
>>
>>28566508

You must have been really close to her...

It's a long shot, but do you have any ideas to the pattern of disappearances? Or even a survivor? A town conspiracy theory? A year is a long time

"You must have been very close to her, I can see how hard this must be."
>"She's like a sister to me, really. Have been since we were fillies."
>"Honestly I was always kinda jealous of how close they were," the earth mare says, "...which made me feel that much worse when she went missing."
>"Don't start blaming yourself either, Sandy."
>"I know, I know..."
"Hmm… The two of you wouldn't happen to have any idea on a pattern to the disappearances, would you? Or know of any survivors?"
>"Not really, " the earth responds "Most of what we know besides what happened to Misty is hearsay and stuff read in the papers."
"Still, a year seems like a long time for this to have been going on. Has no one else really tried looking into this?"
>"Nopony I know", the earth mare responds with a shrug. "Most ponies around here are too scared to really try anything on their own, I think. I'm glad somepony's finally trying, even if you're not from around here. Maybe that's why you |are| trying."
>You scratch at your chin in thought for a moment.
"Alright, well, thanks for the information. If we find anything out about Misty or where she might have gone, we'll let you know."
>"Thanks," the pegasus replies weakly. "I do appreciate it, mister..."
"Parcel Song."
>"My name's Candy Cloud." The pegasus replies.
>"Sandy Shores," the earth mare adds with a wave. "We usually hang around either here or down in the lower markets if you need us again."
>"Thanks again, for anything you might find out," Candy says.

>Giving your goodbyes to the two mares, you trot towards the door, calling over your shoulder to your increasingly inebriated colleague.
