I don't think I've rewritten her character, I think we just have different interpretations of the nature of dragons in general.
I imagine dragons to be wild and impulsive, but I think that you imagine them more as ancient, wise, and in control of their emotions.

Canon dragons are both, actually. Becoming less impulsive with age, while many still remain wild and feral (green dragon) throughout the millennia. The red one on the other hand is very much in control of his emotions, doing the equivalent of swatting at the fly trying to interrupt his 100 year nap.
Hell, most dragons didn't even bother showing up when Torch called them with the scepter, only the young and impulsive ones did.

That's really a stretch, it's only in recent pop-culture that dragons are near-universally scaled, largely thanks to J. R. R. Tolkien and the eternal background corruption of Dungeons & Dragons (seriously, that game is responsible for misleading a whole generation of gamers and fantasy fans into thinking a longsword is one-handed weapon and that studded leather actually exists). Go back to the 80's and older and you'll find lots of examples of all sorts of non-scaled dragons. Falkor from the Neverending Story instantly springs to mind.

If we look to a wider historical perspective we find things like Chinese dragons (who rather resemble Discord, including the "made from all sorts of animals" bit). Some of the animals who lend their traits are mammals, like the lion lending it's mane and what have you. The Behemoth is also occasionally referred to as a dragon along with Leviathan, while Behemoth is much closer to a buffalo or hippopotamus (impenetrable hide VS impenetrable scales), in description etc.

If we stick to the Modern Western Fantasy dragon, (which is, after all, the one we're most familiar with) and dissect it, we find that it's only superficially reptilian, all similarities to reptiles begin and end at the scales. A dragon's body is much closer to a mammal like a cat than it is to any reptile, especially obvious when looking at the placement and angle of the legs, so one could easily argue that dragons should have a few rows of crotchtits. No reptiles have horns, either. Those are, again, found in mammals (and insects). The wings are either bird-like or bat-like on a dragon, flying lizards and the like have completely different "wing-like flaps".
