I think that Golden Arrow is a great protagonist, that Night Delivery is a lot of fun, and that you're doing a great job!

As for my advice on how to make Boatquest better: remove tokens.

Your waifu is great.

I have two questions
1. Is it considered a CYOA faux pas to allow the actual death of the player character if the choices leading up to that point should logically result in death?
2. Is it acceptable to go through describing such a scenario and then continue the CYOA from an earlier point to allow the players to make different choices?
>>
>>28527837
>1. Is it considered a CYOA faux pas to allow the actual death of the player character if the choices leading up to that point should logically result in death?
Depends in the players and in how it's handled.

>2. Is it acceptable to go through describing such a scenario and then continue the CYOA from an earlier point to allow the players to make different choices?
People may call it gamey and say it makes death irrelevant and forces the players to act in OOC knowledge.
>>
>>28527837
It was accepted at one point, at least.
Inept used to kill her protagonists and reload before the death when the players did something stupid, or didn't notice a pixel of death, and folks only got butt tussled when the death was bullshit, or they fucked up super hard and it had lasting effects, or when they took the joke pun that came with it personally like a faggot. I kinda miss them. Some of the puns and deaths were funny, specifically that time we got crushed by a meteor and that time we spontaneously combusted because we were late for an appointment.
Doc_SH also did it with his applejack quest, and I think he did it with his previous quests once or twice too, and it wasn't frowned upon.
>>
>>28527837
1. no, but.
2. yes, although.

Much like most things, it depends on how you handle it. If we die to gross player error, sure okay. If you roll a 1 behind the scenes and we get hit by a bus, then no.
>>
>>28527837
If character death were to happen, it should be due to a series of poor decisions on the players' part. A QM should help them out as much as they can, but if it's at that point they really should be dead, I don't think it's wrong to kill them.

If player character death were to occur, I think the right move would be to write an appropriate ending. Or maybe make a party member the new player character and continue like normal. Unless you had an in-universe justification for time rewinding, I think giving a redo like that is one of the worst things you can do. It's a cop out and it breaks immersion. It's just cheap.

I actually really like this idea for a CYOA
>>
>>28527837
1)
Depends on the tone of the quest. If it's in cutequestria or it's a SoL quest, it should be pretty damn impossible to die. If you're exploring a temple full of traps or trying to survive in a city then death being possible makes sense.

If death is a possible it should feel possible from the get go. No one would be furious at the QM if the players lead Peppermint to her doom in 11-54, but a death in the middle of an angry unicorn SoL will get a bad response.

2)
Sure. How you go about that will determine a lot of the tone of the quest. If you have lives and an OOC reload system then it'll be gamey, if the reloading is in character and part of the story it'll feel story oriented. See Unique vs Daring Do and the Temple of somethingoranother.

Treat BoatQuest how you treat Night Delivery, as something fun that you are doing for your players that doesn't have to be taken too seriously. I feel like you treat Boats as if it is somehow loftier than Night and you shouldn't. You write better for Night.

Boat quest is cool n' all but I think one of the things that's bothering me about it is that it feels really really aimless. Which depending on the circumstances can be a good thing, but there just doesn't feel like there is anything stimulating to do.

Night Delivery still feels "aimless" but there is immediate and entertainingly frivoulous things to do.

BoatQuest is kinda the only quest I'm playing right now. I like the characters a lot, but I agree that the bit on the island seemed a bit convoluted. But that might as well be part of the players' fault, since it's still kinda the beginning of the quest. The bits "en route" aboard the ship seemed a lot clearer, so maybe it's fair to say that location-building outside the ship needs to be tightened. Not even sure how but - just like you would in a sprawling harbor city full of all kind of ponies and other races - I felt a bit lost in Portunio in more than just the literal sense. Apart from that, it's a very fun and comfy quest. Looking forward to the continuation back aboard The EES The Best Ship.

So I think there's a lot to be learned from how Forgotten Faces and Warrant have both opened.

Both of them are much-awaited returns of decorated QMs which have their quests start with you heading towards a town in the distance on a wagon with sidekick(s) in tow, but most people seem "eh" about Warrant while everyone waits with baited breath for Forgotten Faces to return.

SPES has talked a lot about how much planning he did for FF, so I assume most of the bright decisions he made were intentional, and its very well-designed from the get-go. It's got a great atmosphere, dark and foreboding with cheerful characters and bursts of humor that quickly set it apart from the goofy DFU by establishing that it would be taking itself more seriously but was still very intended for fun. It had an extensive character creation process that was punctuated with frequent updates from the QM that made it avoid seeming like it was dragging down the quest for too much, which gave the players time to think about their character, and the quirky and contrasting band of side-kicks were entertaining to interact with while the part was taking time to settle into the character. We also got hooked FAST, but in a no-pressure sort of way that said "this is what's going on, feel free to look into that." Finally, the setting itself was very well characterized with an amazing set-piece moment that gave it an eerie feel, which SPES has kept up with a barrage of interesting environments and tidbits about the town and a lot of quirky characters who have been fun to deal with.

Honestly, Forgotten Faces might be the best quest introduction ever.

Warrant, on the other hand, Res kind of dropped the ball with. We were started by waking up and having been given the most bare-bones of descriptors and then told to sort of do stuff. Given a vague track to follow but not a particularly interesting one. Banter with Velvet was fun but became sort of systematic. The character has essentially turned into Gar 2.0 which has made the quest the worst sort of mixture between Skyrim and Urban. I appreciate that Res is trying to give us freedom as players, but the sort of freedom he's given us has largely left us with an incredibly watered down story so far and a world best described as 'generic city'. Most of the jokes are taken from the players or one or two other jokes (including a couple of /pol/ memes that have fallen almost totally flat). There's nothing really gained from Res' use of the jokes, he doesn't seem to be building on them or improving on them, he's just kind of like "yeah that's funny" and he throws it in with little thought. And of course, it hasn't differentiated itself from Urban at all. I liked Urban, I really did, but when this quest features a relatively slow background plot, follows a bit of a loser protagonist who's at the basis of a racist problem in Equestria, and has stated off with slow SoL and promises to have a larger plot thrown at us soon, it's feeling very much the same and I it just seems like Res is scrambling back to safe after the relatively limited success of Hype Quest.

So what can we learn?
- Good quests intros need a solid starting tone.
- The earlier a plot hook is intertwined into the story, the better.
- If you want the players to do most of the characterization, give them plenty of time and interesting things to do while they work it out, and make it clear they are making the character.
- The feel of a quest is more important than the actual things that have happened.
- Don't be afraid to throw the players a curveball compared to their expectations.

you're giving FF a lot of leniancy here. I can't recall an opening as painfully long or as awkward as 'there's something in the woodsx10', it was far from being the best opener ever.

Plus FF is an art quest, which helps and Res's popularity has always been a rock solid core of only about a dozen readers. He was never hugely popular, just consistently did well for himself in playercount.
>>
>>28533297
>>28533304
I certainly agree with you about Warrant.

Forgotten Faces has struck a chord with me, pretty much the whole thing has been neat, and there's already a story I'm greatly looking forward to exploring. While I don't think it's the best quest we've had, it's certainly pretty strong.

Warrant, however, is just uninteresting as a whole so far. It's very much a 'do what you want' quest. Definitely closer to Biggs 2 than Urban in terms of quality thus far.
As for Hypequest, I don't think Res ever intended that to be a super successful quest, and there's reason for that. He had to go do military things and figured he had time for a little epilogue quest before he left. It was more for urban fans than anything, and played as a simple, safe SoL.

As for Warrant feeling samey, I agree with that too. It feels a bit formulaic, actually. The same elements that were present in Hypequest and Urban are present here too, as you described. Now there's nothing wrong with sticking with what works, but putting new wrapping on an old thing isn't that interesting. Guri does certainly feel similar to Gar as an MC, and Velvet's character isn't much new either. She's what you'd get if you made Shade into a female unicorn, basically. Take that on top of the things that you described, yeah, there's not much interesting in Warrant.

They feel like they're designed to each have stand out and impressive personalities that stand out harshly against each other. Instead of being characters in a story that will stand out or mesh with each other and the world naturally.

This is one of the reasons stand alone OCs don't usually mesh well with stories. The personality is all in the character, which means it has to be super special unique and stand out when placed against other stand alone OCs usually, instead of how the character fits into the world.

An Historical anon here, phoneposting from my sisters robotics competition.

Is it okay to make decisions based on information that you but not the players are privy to?

Ex. The players choose path A, but you have information and characters that would only have been revealed through path B.

Is it okay to make decisions using the knowledge and characters the players managed to miss?

Just out of curiosity

>>
>>28539058
No.
>>
>>28539058

>>
>>28539058
What decisions would you be making as the QM? To railroad against player choice and force them on path B despite them choosing A?
>>
>>28539104

I don't know.
>>
>>28539058
can you rephrase the question?
>>
>>28539058
I'm not entirely sure what exactly it is you're asking.
Are you asking if it's ok to ignore the players choices because they needed to go to path B but instead chose A? Because if so, no.
If that's not what you mean, you need to rephrase your question.
What decisions are you making exactly?
>>
>>28539126
Railroading? No. But I believe that characters deserve characterization away from the MC. So say two characters develop a relationship, or someone is hurt.

The players would not have this information due to having gone down a separate path and receiving other info.
>>
>>28539058
If you're asking "you don't meet the other ponies and they continue their "mission" without the main character" then yeah that's fine.
>>
>>28539169
To clarify, the MC and thusly players cannot know everything.

Is it okay to make decisions based around info they never received?
>>
>>28539058
Is it ok for the QM to make world/story decisions based on info the players don't have? Yes.

Is it ok for the QM to force the MC down a certain path due to info players don't have? No.

You need to be more specific.
>>
>>28539172
Yes, this. Thank you.
>>
>>28539169
Something very important to keep in mind when writing is that the world is alive. Things are always happening with or without the presence of the main character. If they are not there, it still happens, and the characters may come across the results at a later period.

>QM undercoverfagging as player
that's actually much worse than railroading. QMs who do that are human garbage.
>>
>>28539295

There probably isn't a single QM who hasn't done this. They will never admit it of course.
>>
>>28539295
I disagree. I don't mind a QM trying to help us out while still allowing us to make our own decisions, but one that railroads me makes me want to drop everything they run immediately. "Are you sure you want to do that? Do you remember X?" is a lot less irritating than "No, you are going to do Y because the plot demands it."
>>
>>28539295
A agree. QM's posting as players is a terrible practice and it sickens me that it's apparently common. I want complete transparency from the QM. If he wants to post a suggestion with his name that's fine.
>>
>>28539400
Thats retarded, if a qm posts a suggestion with his name on then all the players are obviously going to take it as the 'right option'. If they QM posts as anon then the players still have room to fail.

There isn't one really. Most battle systems don't get players so QMs eventually stop doing them. Hijack could be termed as the most 'successful' and it was removed and revamped half a dozen times and still gets little player engagement.

If you just want examples of battle systems then: Hijack, early Shooting Stars, a variety of Inept productions, LandFall, the various Spaces, A Foal‘s Adventure, and early Alchemy.

>>solved or outright broken by the end of the first encounter every time.

Who's to say the combat isn't intentionally designed to be exploitable? You only have one chance in a CYOA to get a battle right, and if you fail that you possibly kill the character and fuck up the story.

Hijack combat was built on the ideas of exploits, flow, and setups. It only follows that each character has a means to get to that end. Just because the players can identify ONE strategy that works, doesn't mean other strategies don't exist and it certainly doesn't mean the combat is "broken." though there are admittedly some aspects that could be tweaked further

I think it's better to have a successful battle and to allow players to 'break' (read: Understand) a system after a cursory read than to have an overly complex one that offers nothing but fluff and boring as hell engagements. In fact, the reworks that happen are intended to minimize samey strategies, not weaken them

Also, the combat has NOT been revamped a half dozen times. I will admit I have pretty haphazard in maintaining it, but the combat is not so excessively complex that every change means you have to relearn the basics. in fact, most of the old combos still work

Finally, in its current state, there is little significantly wrong with Hijack combat as far as I am concerned outside of unifying the movelists so they all read and play similarly

The players take decent damage to encourage smart decisions most of the time, there are several options both narratively and systemically to facilitate player strategy, and the player characters have distinctly different but still familiar play styles. There is nothing that one shots the player without fair warning, and so far every encounter has been reasonably unique and for the most part optional adding yet ANOTHER approach to combat

I'm sorry for getting your guys's hopes up over that. In my defence, I did say I probably wouldn't run it.
3d art is hard, and I haven't been doing it as long as I have pixel shit. I'll spend a few days or weeks working on stuff, then get pissed off at it, scrap it, and then lose interest, and then repeat the process a week or month later when I get interested in the idea again. I'm already starting to get dissatisfied with the shit I've thrown together over the last week or so.
I'm more or less at the same level of progress on running a quest as I was a year ago.
I'll never finish this, or any other project I've started or will ever start. I'm lazy worthless garbage with no motivation or drive.
I can't even take compliments seriously. Anytime someone compliments me I feel good for a while, and then just end up feeling like shit for some reason. I am unable to be happy with myself or anything I create. It will never happen, at least not from me.
I genuinely doubt that that anything but the visuals would be "good" or interesting anyway. I'm not funny, or creative, so it'd probably just end up being a disappointment for everyone involved.

I'm sorry.

>>28541565
I'm neither of those people. I don't have a name that I use anywhere, here or in sekrit, and have never run a real quest.

To all the QMs out there, how do you do a CYOA without it becoming a chore to you? For some reason every time I do it, eventually I get bored of it and it feels like a chore more than anything but I had a playerbase and didn't want to disappoint them by quitting.

Also have you ever done this before?

I don't think there are techniques you could train, this has to come to you naturally. Maybe you're just not fit to run quests past a certain length.
Just do shorter quests, because having a QM who doesn't really want to run a quest isn't fun for anyone. Not for you, not for the players.

The only reason it'd feel like a chore to me is when i feel terrible.
That's why i havent run in...maybe a month now. i havent been keeping track.
im stuck between wanting to run for the sake of my players but not wanting to run for the same reason. my mood affects my writing too much for me to allow myself to run when i feel like this.
>>
>>28552970
Breaks
>>
>>28552970
When I felt down about my quest, my main motivating factor was my players. Someone's reading, someone's enjoying what you're putting out despite how you personally feel about your own work. Not wanting to disappoint them drove me to keep running when I wanted to just stop.

Otherwise, I suggest coming up with something fun for your quest. It doesn't have to be plot related, it doesn't have to be immediate in whatever context you're currently stuck on. Just, what sounds really cool to you? What makes you go, "Oh man, I really want to do that"? Then you just have to get there. Put the plot on hold so the characters can go to an amusement park or whatever it is you want to do. Sure, it could be a little jarring, but unless your characters are stuck in a dungeon or something, a small offhand comment of "Hey I wanna do this thing. Can we take a break and go do thing?" could be all the excuse you need. Sometimes characters need a break just as much as you do.

Could I ask what exactly you feel is the chore part of running? For me, it was figuring out how to write little things. How to move from one event to another. The constant struggle of "How do I do this?", "What do I do now?", "How do I fix this?" My answer was to just go. Force myself through this godawful part so I can get to what I hope is a much more fun part.
>>
>>28553197
This.

So yeah, I'm gonna be taking a break but i'll be back soon. I have no definitive date for this break but I hope it won't be too long.

Take me home is such a good song.

Considering making I think the theme of my CYOA since the lyrics line up pretty well with what I have planned.

On that note, are there any songs you enjoy that would fit as the theme to your favorite quest?

It felt like a genuine chore only when I was depressed. Like, really depressed, some of it is always with me anyway.

Hipothetical case 4chan is bankrupt and /mlp/ is terminated.
What would happen to CYOAs?

I honestly have no idea what he was truly expecting. Like i'm sorry but Hiro must be a special kind of retarded to have not seen this coming.

Quick show of hands - if someone was to write and publish a pony-themed cyoa (as in classic adventure books where you make a choice and skip ahead to that page) but as a novel at least as long if not longer than Fallout: Equestria, would you be interested in reading and/or buying it?
Would you like to read it for free but could choose if you'd like a physical copy including several high-quality sfw illustrations of the cast scattered throughout?
Or would you just rather read an actual novel with no branching storylines?
Would strong adult and sexual content turn you off, knowing that your characters might be raped or killed?

I need to know for reasons.

A few questions, CYOAguys

I'm not super into following CYOAs myself, but I've always wanted to do an action-oriented one based upon D&D 5e rules, essentially more of a /tg/-style quest than our CYOAs. I've DM'd my fair share of IRL games, but I'm about to hit a long dry spot as far as players go. My questions are, do you think you'd participate in that? Has anyone tried it before? If yes, how did it go? What do you think the major pitfalls would be? I'm guessing dice rolls would be an issue since people can accuse me of cheesing them, and combat would be slow if I played it turn by turn.
>>
>>28558415
No
Yes

Muh numbers
>>
>>28558307
Indifferent to most of that. If it's an interesting story I'll read it even if it's lewd/non-lewd a CYOA/not a CYOA, etc etc. Probably won't buy a hard copy as I have too many books as it is.
>>
>>28558415
I'd play it if you totally hid the numbers and ran it all narratively.
Vampony ran a dnd 5e system and was met with limited success. The problem being that dice can just decide to fuck you over even if you make all the right decisions.
CYOAs should put the story first and the system second.
>>
>>28558415
If I like the characters/story.
Foreground? No, background? yeah.
Background goes fine.
Realizing that your story/characters matter more than your system.
I don't think that accusation has ever been thrown about to any of the QMs that rolled stuff. Combat is always slow.
>>
>>28558478
>Combat is always slow.
I suppose I can behind the scenes most of combat then write out what happens. Just let the Anons tell me how we should tackle it and stop at important turning points to make decisions.
>>
>>28558524
That's how Super did it for a while and it worked alright.
>>
>>28558524
That's how a few QMs do it. 11-54 is apparently run entirely by dice in the background but you'd never know it from reading it. /mlp/ generally prefers stories over games. But if you really want to make a game feel free, it might go well it might not.
>>
>>28558826
The on a day, off a day style of running is apparently going to be keeping up for a while longer partially because I enjoy it so here's more Night Quest!
>>
>>28558836
Run it that way if you like it better, might as well make yourself comfy while doing so.

Sorry for not making a new Outcasts thread like I promised. I was about to and then my friend got into some very deep shit and I had to help him out.
Things are fine now and I'll make a new thread tomorrow.
