EPR-Anon again. Just re-iterating my offer from the last thread:

One of my favorite things about EPR was that they held a Mare-athon on the first ever Brony Day. All of Season One aired back to back, with the occasional short break loaded with fandom videos and music. There was even an article on Equestria Daily about it. In order to emulate the same thing for friends that I wanted to introduce to the fandom, I downloaded several things in order to replicate the format.

So... I have some videos that don't exist anymore.

If anyone's looking for anything from the fandom that was around a good long time back, but you can't seem to find it, respond to this post asking for it. It's possible that I might have it. If I do, I'll make it available for download.

Here's an example:

I don't have a request, but I would like to thank you for preserving fandom history.

Do you think you could offer all your old videos in a torrent maybe?
>>
I'd say Misterdavey's stuff. He made some sick videos, and he even was gonna make a rainbow factory one but has since fallen into obscurity.
>>
>>28526731
in fairness to him, his shit kept getting taken down which makes it hard for a channel to grow/maintain relevance. Like he still has over 100K subs with only 1 video left.
>>
>>28526576
Some of the things that I have are certainly not gone, though they are harder to find.

I collected a good handful of Season 1 stuff, but I also did the same thing for Season 2. As far as I know, all of the Season 2 stuff that I saved still exists.

Speaking of Season 1 stuff, I know that this one is also no longer available on its original channel, but was uploaded in much poorer quality by someone else to Youtube:

>>28526769

Remember when you could go on Youtube and at any given time there were at least a dozen versions of every episode uploaded? Even though I have every episode downloaded, there was just something comfy about being able to bring up any episode at any time that way, probably because that is how I first discovered the show.

And who was that guy who used to upload little video parodies of each episode shortly after each one aired back around season 2 or maybe 3?

I haven't seen this one around in a while:
gmod, pinkie gets dashie to smoke something from the everfree forest (i think), resulting in an amusing series of hallucinations.

And oh yeah, two more, both probably gmod skits: Heavy prank-calls applejack; Pinkamena and Fluttershy (I think) attempt to rob Heavy's house, in what I seem to remember was part of a series I didn't watch any more of. These weren't particularly great or anything, but they'd be nostalgic views.

This is the torrent for the pony.fm archive as of September 2016.

There's 19,853 tracks from 2183 artists in 55GB, and the torrent is hosted on a fast seedbox. Included in the pony.fm archive is a copy of the MLP Music Archive.
Everything is encoded in Opus with default settings, without cover images.

Note: If you're running windows, use qBittorrent or Deluge instead of µTorrent or Bittorrent, otherwise the download might get stuck due to weird song names.

Thanks. Curious about this opus encoding, though, knowing nothing about it: surely mp3s were not recompressed here, and it's some kind of container? Or were these originally optional wav downloads from bandcamp/whatever?
Either way, quite happy to boost my most likely average collection.
>>
>>28547029
Opus is basically what webm is for gif, better in every way. Smaller filesize for more quality.
>>
>>28547029
>Thanks. Curious about this opus encoding, though, knowing nothing about it
Like anon said, Opus is basically a more modern version of mp3. mp3 is 20 years old techology so it doesn't have the best size/quality factor by far.

>surely mp3s were not recompressed here
The archive was created from FLAC (lossless) files, or MP3 320 when FLAC wasn't available.

>>28547849

>>
>>28547925
That ponies should pony pony.
>>
>>28547849
It could not have possibly been because of Derpygate because of the time discrepancy. The Smile song leak would've been more plausible since it led to Hasbro "cracking down" on show staff who put out their own stuff related to the show, but it's still 1 month early.

My guess is that he was told to take them down and stop making them because he used the show assets for scenes he made up himself, probably without legal consent.

Anyway, Derpygate has been the subject for many, many misconceptions over the years and it seems few remember what really happened, so people believe blatant lies.
>>
>>28547957
It may also be that I recall the animator in question interacting with the fandom outside of those videos, and just expressed their disappointment in some EqD post's comments.

I think you're looking at it from the wrong angle. A plenty of fan videos do get views like that, but simpler mash-ups or PMVs with the "ponify everything" attitude aren't too special anymore. The general audience isn't lured in to watch videos like that anymore. The show isn't in the spotlight anymore (in terms of news outlets reporting "adult men are watching MLP!"), so it's not like when the fanbase was small enough that even the slightest of remixing two source materials together made them go like "They combined [X] with... ponies? What?

Meanwhile, the more involved fans probably feel it's a bit too "been there, seen that".

>>28548813
Not him but I /g/ too.

SSDs are faster than HDDs by a lot, they are also newer technology and more expensive.

SSDs have a limited number of uses, everytime you write something to a SSD it removes one little chunk of it's lifetime. More expensive SSDs have longer lifetimes. When they reach the end of their lifetime they become unbearably slow or unreadable in the worst case, but since the lifetime is generally known you'll get a warning that it's dying before losing anything.

HDDs don't have a known lifetime like this, but since it's mechanical eventually the engine or the reading head will break depending on the quality of the drive.

HDDs lose data if you shake or shock or bend them while powered on, if dust gets into it, or if they're so mechanicaly worn down it causes bad sectors.
Leaving a HDDs on a shelf for a long time without using it can actually damage the engine more than if you use the HDD regularly, but it probably won't lose data.

SSDs don't lose data to physical abuse, but they don't like extreme temperatures and they don't like being left alone too long without use.
If you keep your SSD even just several months on a shelf at moderate to hot temperatures, you're guaranteed to lose all your data.

And that's about it.
>>
>>28548813
SSDs are much, much faster than HDDs because they have no moving parts. HDDs use magnetized physical platters to store data and read/write moving heads to read and write data by magnetization.

HDDs are very good for long term storage because it would take more than 50 years for the magnetic field to grow weak enough for the data to start being unreadable. As long as the drive is kept in room temperature with no magnetic disturbances around your data will be fine.

I'll be honest and say I don't know much about SSDs as that's really new technology to me that I haven't been able to afford yet, but I know SSDs use NAND flash memory and that kind of memory has it to it that blocks of data will wear off over time as they are used and eventually die permanently. It is because of that that SSDs are usually much more short-lived than HDDs.

Iirc, IBM(?) or someone else's SSDs purposely hose themselves if something goes wrong. I think the idea was easier disposal for corporate customers. Maybe this has changed, but it was one shitty aspect of them.
>>
>>28548813
The absolute safest is magnetic tape.
The current standard that will be coming out next year is LTO8 (Linear Tape Open, Generation 8), which has a native write speed of 450MB/s, and a single tape holds 12.8TB of data. LTO10 will hold 48TB per tape, and write at 1.1GB/second.

Servers and data centers, (and myself) use LTO In huge robotic tape libraries for long term backup and offline storage.

But yes, HDD's are the safest for consumers, simply because the data is physically placed on a physical medium, among other reasons. It's harder for the data to become corrupted. In theory, it could get wet and short out, and all you need is a new driver circuit, or move the platters to a different enclosure, and your data would still be there.

On my computer, I have a RAID 10 array of 6 drives, 15,000RPM, 150GB, SAS 12G. Faster than a PCI SSD, (sequential write 1.5GB/s) with the reliability and lifespan of an HDD, and the redundancy of fully mirrored drives.
The best part? It all only cost $150 for all the drives and the controller.
>>
>>28549225
>RAID 10 array of 6 drives
This is fun until you hit an obscure firmware bug in the RAID support and corrupt all your data.
>>
>>28549237
With an enterprise grade, data server, workstation? Not a chance.
>>
>>28549225
>The best part? It all only cost $150 for all the drives and the controller.
New or used? because that's hard to believe
>>
>>28549225
Mmm...
Well, your raid and a SAS drive configuration with a controller would obviously be very well high in terms of speed, even on a PCIe x8 3.0 bus, it'd soar very high. My guess is you have a standard PCIe 3.0 on an x16 bus. Frankly SAS is the best for instant reads and writes, on both mediums.

As well as magnetic tape, it is the best for storage mediums, but consider that unless the whole area they are store in is airtight, dust or something else may actually end up disrupting a bit of data on that tape, which in a corporate situation, is not fun to deal with. especially if that data is being requested by higher ups or a powerful company.

They're working pulls form servers.
So yeah, used, but they have self tests on the drives themselves, and in the programs to anticipate the life left.
Not just SMART, other things as well.
The warranties run out, so companies are more or less forced to upgrade, even though everything still works perfectly, so we can get it at a massive discount.
Remember, these are enterprise components. They cost a fortune new, but that's because they're designed to last. Not like the consumer shit nowadays.

Now you get it. I can understand Magnetic Media in a, say, hyper-de-magnetized storage room, like some bomb bunker, that powers up once every hour with a few partition tables/MBR file zones, and maybe an automated backup of a compressed image in a few places in emergency of magentic read failures, sector format errors, etc. Practically commercial only. Data Tapes will need to be extremely well contained, like a vacuum,to make sure nothing happens.

The first MLP-related thing I ever saved. Despite several computer upgrades and reorganization attempts, this image has stood as a constant.

I saved it from a /b/read about two weeks before /mlp/ was created. I had just started watching the show back then, and caught up during S2.
I'd been on 4chan for years at that time already, so /b/read didn't strike my fancy, but that was still my first interaction with the actual fandom as a whole. In fact, that was my first actual dive into ANY fandom.

Dunno.
It's a good picture, but still just one among many. But for me, it's something special, for me, it's what put me on the ride in the first place.

Understood. If I gradually copied over the Pony, /mlp/, and other relevant content, then shared it from my own setup, would that be permissible?
>>
>>28555791
You can copy whatever you want from it. I'm just not comfortable with my server being too well-known outside of this board/4chan. Especially with some of the content on it. It tends to attract Normies and 'Bronies'.

Actually I have a BTSync set-up, so you could use that to get these folders:

For Free!
From the local electronics recycling depot. It's run by the province, and I take what people bring and then return the gutted carcasses.
Most of what's there only needs a clean install, a CMOS flash, or a new hard drive, and it's good as new.
Monitors, 4K TV's, enterprise Laser printers, and a ton of other stuff is also just dropped off there even though they all still work perfectly.
Vacuum tubes are pretty cool too.

Pic related, bottom row:
One time there was a $1600 Mitsubishi 1080p DLP projector. I aimed it with a first-surface mylar mirror onto the ceiling above my bed. Perfect for watching the latest episode. All 100% free.

I built a propane furnace from scratch, and now melt aluminum rims, heat sinks, copper, and various other metals into ingots, and into tools, and other things through the lost-foam process. The first thing I did was an RD hood ornament for my truck.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAdvqWnDVwU
>>
>>28555945

I admire your work, I myself built a forge out of scrap and crafted myself a historically accurate three-piece helmet, yet I can only dream of melting my own ingots.

That RD hood ornament looks like shit, though.

Look up Lost Foam Casting, or LFC
Car manufacturers sometimes use it for high-end engine blocks, among other things.
Basically, the pattern is made in styrofoam of that you want to cast.
Sprues are added, and that is then coated in refractory, or plaster ceramic to help it hold its shape, and produce a better finish.
The whole thing is put in sand, and vibrated to settle it.
This process will work without the plaster shell, but the finish is a little rougher.
When the metal is pored in, the Styrofoam vaporizes and burns away, while the metal takes its place.
The weight of the metal, and the angular nature of the sand grains keeps it from collapsing.
Once that solidifies enough, it is taken out of the sand, and quenched in water to remove the plaster shell.
The sprues, gates and runners are cut off, and the part then proceeds to machining and finishing.
I made a sandblasting/shot peening cabnit, and then use cloth buffing wheels and polishing blocks, black ebony, brown Tripoli, white diamond, and red rouge, to get the mirror finish.

I get my main supply of aluminum from car rims. NEVER use pop cans, or aluminum extrusions. They're terrible for casting, and if you pay deposit on them, it's better to use that money to buy real aluminum alloy.
I get my alloy rims for free from the local tire shops. They give me high grade casting alloy, and don't have to pay for disposal. it's a win-win.

That's pretty interesting. I'm amazed you managed to build a fucking furnace out of nothing, I would think achieving the melting point of 660 degrees for aluminium would be impossible without specialized equipment, and I didn't even think that the metal could take the styrofoam's space. I understand that now.

Now I wish I had a hobby like that.

It's not that hard, just propane in the right situation.
Even charcoal setups can work if done right.
So far I've made key chains, a necklace for my girlfriend, a custom tool to help remove the crankshaft pulley on my car, and a few other things.
I'd post pictures of the build process, but it thinks facebook links are spam.
It's based on the 'two-bucks' furnace from backyard metal casting.com, so just go there.
The torch is really just $7 of pipe, and a suitable regulator. (~$35) Based on the Oliver Upwind, also from backyard metalcasting
It's unfortunate that I never get to meet anyone on here. No one I know really takes and interest in this stuff, but guys on here think it's the coolest thing ever.
I've taught myself everything I know; about computers, cars, metal, welding... but I'd rather have a guy with similar interests that we can hang out and work together on stuff.
I'm sure you'll be melting metal before you know it. :) I made my furnace when I was 16; it's not that hard.

But I know what you mean. It's hard to see things that you want to do, but either haven't been able to or never gotten around to.

Well, it's been nice talking with you, but I've got a flight to catch.
I just got my private license the other day and RD wants to go for a ride.

Best of luck in your future endeavours.

I started last November, and soloed this March.
Slowed down by high school and work, I just recently was able to take the flight test. Weather delays and a head cold also delayed it about a month.
Currently I'm going for my commercial license, attending ground school and building up hours.
The college has a joint program with the flight academy, where you get your commercial license with all the ratings, an aviation diploma, and a business management certificate.

Well Hasbro manually put a Content ID claim on his channel and ganked his stuff. Then once you get strikes for things like that, Youtube makes it impossible for you to earn money on their platform. Adsense will have nothing to do with you. Your entire budget will rely on Patreon or whatever.

Not that Youtube itself is doing much of anything for creators these days. Year after year the ad revenue is falling and the site is less profitable to work on. The only thing that really works is shoestring budget stuff like Let's Plays, vlogs, or playing with dolls in real time.

Youtube is doing its damndest to kill off animation on their platform. Only strange anomalies can survive and the animators who are making it might be talented but not necessarily - mainly it depends on whether they were good early when Youtube did promote them or if they got popular off the site thanks to someone else promoting them.

Long story short, animators are up shit creek on Youtube as it is, and if somebody gives you any trouble then it's a house of cards. Mr. Davies didn't have a chance once Hasbro started kicking his stuff over.
