It depends on how you rate seasons. This was an excellent season for Spike, a pretty good season for Fluttershy and a good season for Pinkie. It's been really bad for Rarity and absolutely terrible for Twilight, Applejack and Rainbow. On average, this season has been worse than season 3 for most of the main characters.

And, btw, S3 was probably Rainbow's best season, she accepted Scootaloo and her "adoptive" sister and she decided that her friends were more important for her than fulfilling her life dream of being in the Wonderbolts. Even if you don't like anything about those episodes, she was depicted in a completely light-hearted way, while this season she's been nothing but an unlikeable cunt.

I was enjoying all her parts in the season until the latest episode. After that, not so much.

This season has been downright vicious to the characters. More than half the main cast have gotten their turn in the weak writing spotlight. AJ in Applejack's Day Off, Rainbow Dash in Newbie Dash and 28 Pranks Later, Rarity and the previous two in Cart Before the Ponies, Twilight in various smaller moments throughout the season, and now Starlight. The finale had better be good, because right now the show is on thin ice. Having to compare the current season to the run of amazing episodes we got in S5 isn't helping.

Honestly for me, the show started to slip after Friendship Games aired. To me, that was the best of the EqG movies and Season 5 was pretty decent up until that point. When it came back from hiatus, it was mostly unmemorable shit except for The Mane Attraction and the finale. Season 6 started off pretty good but dipped into unmemorable shit again after the hiatus. I do think a lot of effort is going into the movie so the show has been dipping. I hope once McCarthey is finished with the movie, the show picks up but I have my severe doubts

I didn't exactly defend them, but I realized that there could be potential.

And there are still good episodes about this season. But they're getting more and more sparse.

But S6 is disappointing. It's better now to wipe the slate and autism clean and start fresh.

Out of all of this season I do have to say that their use of the setting is pretty weak. Even when they do explore the more fantasy areas they're either looked over, or old settings. Not a big deal for me, though, that isn't why I like the show. I enjoy the horses getting into funny situations, but not ones that seem out of place. People tend to think that the characters are too narrow, and that they wouldn't make a mistake.
