I think this is the first episode I can say that I actually thought was bad; which is a fucking big accomplishment. I never considered Lesson Zero as anything extra or the GOAT episode some people make it to be, but this was pretty disappointing.

How have you not noticed that her still being amoral in her core and Twilight failing to notice that is a big part of her character? Twilight thinks back to her messup with Lesson Zero and thinks Starlight is using the same sort of reasoning so she's quick to forgive, but actually Glimmer still has the same perspective she had when she founded her creepy Equalist town and hasn't learned the right lesson from this incident - basically she learned how to complete the lessons the "right" way to keep gaming the system but hasn't really absorbed their message.
It's a setup for a finale where Glimmer is tested/tempted and fails because Twilight was an unprepared teacher who couldn't recognize her student's true weakness, like Celestia was able to do for her. It's a good arc.

In short, Starlight is Batman.
You see, Batman is a master of all kinds of martial arts, has billions and screws with his enemies with ease. Why isn't he considered a Marty Sue? He got emotional problems, fears and values.
Starlight is really, REALLY good at magic. But she got problems making friendships, fears that she may disappoint others with her actions or her past. She tries to trick herself around those problems but falls on her butt plenty of times. A well rounded character.

Starlight has always been dangerously powerful, a unicorn verging onto young-Alicorn levels of raw magical ability who went toe-to-toe with Twilight last season. That's why teaching her the value of friendship is important, because otherwise she's a potential danger to Equestria - and the fact that she's been getting more powerful with Twilight's teaching (giving her book smarts to match her raw power) is meant to be a worrying sign because she likes the power but skimps on the friendship.
The premise for the episode was set up immediately - Starlight is getting stronger but isn't absorbing the meaning of her friendship lessons. The mind control was the most visceral expression of this and the ending shows the other ponies forgiving her and she "learns" what she's supposed to be doing with the friendship lessons but hasn't completely absorbed what she did wrong or what they're really meant to teach her, so the door is open for future episodes to have her be amoral again.

For what it's worth, I think the cold open is meant to hint that she's getting dangerously close to Twilight's level. The diamond shield looked stronger than Twilight's. Starlight also jumped straight to supernova, and while Twilight was holding back (because she didn't want to destroy her library) the fact that Starlight stepped up her game immediately is meant to be worrying.
Basically she was already dangerously powerful on her natural instincts, but with Twilight's help she could become even more powerful and that's why the friendship lessons to temper her use of magic are important. If she was clearly less powerful than Twilight then the impetus to train her wouldn't be as great since even if she went astray Twilight could contain her.

Overall it had good premise and story, but the writing/dialogues just weren't up to the standard of S1/2 - it wasn't awful, but it was only "ok" throughout most of the episode, so that was boring. ... again, have they given this to the S1 crew it easily could've been as good as lesson zero.

It contrasts nicely to Lesson Zero if only because the madcap madness in that episode was purposeful. Twilight knew she was making trouble and that was the point--make a problem to fix a problem to meet the quota.
Here Starlight didn't intend to cause trouble. She didn't understand the basic purpose of the lessons, didn't understand what she did wrong until Twilight reframed it for her, and even after completing the lessons indicated that she didn't get the point.
Twilight was under stress. Starlight shows that she doesn't understand social interaction, and maybe even can't understand social interaction. She thinks strictly in terms of action-outcome, totally literal and goal oriented. She is a manipulative, high-functioning autist (literally, not in the har har insulting sense) who tries to veil her disability and social anxiety by simply being the best at every little thing she does.
After thinking this through, my opinion of this episode is rising pretty fast from a medicore 6/10.

Being overpowered is key to justifying why teaching her friendship matters, because we've already seen that on her own and without guidance she's a threat to all of Equestria. It ups the stakes for Twilight as a teacher, and showing her rivaling Twilight in magic power is meant to be a warning sign that Twilight needs to be just as good a teacher of friendship or else she could just be raising a bigger danger.
She is an excellent foil for Twilight because she's going through the same cycle, but Twilight is misidentifying parts of what motivate her based on her own experiences - Twilight saw this as a Lesson Zero style accident rather than Glimmer just fundamentally not understanding why controlling others is wrong, an extension of her previous bad behaviour with the village.
If you can't appreciate that the next evolution of Twilight's character is from student to teacher and that she therefore needs a problematic student to highlight her own weaknesses then I can't help you. It's basically an Anakin Skywalker story.

Literally the first time she was introduced, she was a magical threat significant enough to endanger Twilight, and then in her finale appearance Twilight and her went toe-to-toe. The reason for her insane ability is because of her whole equalist ideology: She hated and wanted to get rid of talent, while actually being extremely talented in something. And she ised that talent to steal other people's abilities. It was central to the irony and hypocrisy of her character.

I don't care about Powerlevel chat, she's a natural magical prodigy because that makes her training difficult for Twilight and important for Equestria. The important mechanic for the narrative is that she be almost as powerful as Twilight without training so that WITH training she'd be too powerful to defeat head-on. The setting never laid out some kind of universal law about how powerful unicorns can be or why there can't be the odd mutant. Besides, I don't see why Twilight has to be the most powerful on raw talent, her biggest skill was aptitude for magical training and study not muscle.

Seeing more types of magic and spells was pretty nice, that's been something that usually falls a bit short with magic often being reduced to telekinesis.
For the story, it was a decent idea, definitely inspired by the sorcerer's apprentice as some have pointed out. It was mostly well-done, however I think it took Starlight a bit too long to notice that the spells weren't working as intended, maybe she could have started with one and then added the others when the first wasn't enough for what she wanted (not efficient enough), to then have it go bad at the end. This could maybe have improved the pacing, as I felt that the resolution and apology scene dragged out a bit too long and was a bit awkward as if Vogel didn't quite know how to do it (it could probably have used some cleaning up by another writer; the start of the episode felt similarly clunky but less so). Also going with that, the ponies gradually having less and less free will would've been funny too.
Overall nicely done with room for improvement. It shows that Vogel isn't quite there yet with character interactions and/or dialogue.
On a related note, this is the kind of episode to give to a not too MLP-experienced writer like Vogel or the first-time writers, because the issues with the writing don't stick out as badly as they did with a more complex plot like The Times They Are a Changeling. Vogel might actually have been a better fit for that episode since he has at least some experience with the show even if he isn't quite there yet.

This is pretty much my thought, though I bumped it up to 8 because it reinforced some ideas about Starlight. Namely the fact rhat she isn't really fully 'reformed' yet and as shown here, her abilities can easily be misused because she hasn't really figured out how to function as anything but a psychopath. That's kinda why she's been relegated to the cuckshed this season, the finale is where she is suppossed to finally get it and figure it out.
Too bad the direction of this season has been a disaster. If all the nu-writers were in the level of Vogel the season would've been a lot better, at least equal to s4.

What's the point? Most of the board only watches episodes now to look for things to bitch about and even struggles to do that. Despite some reasonable complaints the issues people shitpost about usually have either explicitly canon solutions, or solutions which can be reasonably inferred from canon events. Most are only interested in participating to shout their viewpoints so no common ground is ever reached. I enjoy the show, I have complaints but they aren't numerous enough to put me off of it. I don't doubt there will be, but I actually don't think we'll get it before the movie. It seems like production is only just now starting on the season, and with a year-plus animation lead time, that means we won't even get the new season until around the movie premiere. They might very well be hoping that the movie hype will sustain brand interest through the gap.

Well, the third book is still in the pipeline, so he isn't quite done right now, when S7 would be getting written. That didn't stop him for S5, though. Also for screenwriting, he could have the movie adaptation of his books coming. I forget what the status is on that, but it's definitely not dead and I recall him stating that work is still being done on that.
Also yeah, animation isn't the only screenwriting, and he's much more of a fan of live-action than animation if you look at his twitter feed.

As a kid raised by SNES and Genesis RPGs, this trope always pissed me off. I was so happy when Glimmer was casting OP spells at the start of Season 6 because it means the show creators didn't take the this extremely lazy, over-ridden path.
I'm still a little scared it may show up in this season's finale though.

Seriously though, we have more posters than usual but way less discussion.
Is there anything anyone wants to discuss about the episode while the sticky is still up? Like how Fluttershy's affinity with animals seems to extend to insects as well? Maybe how there's at least one section of Twilight's castle that seems to be completley neglected and unexplored, and probably underground? What about how we really didn't get to see what Rarity and Rainbow Dash were up to for almost the entire episode.
Seriously though, am I the only one who's curious as to what Rainbow Dash was doing the whole time? And was anyone else slightly disappointed when we didn't get to see just how overboard Rarity went with that "bigger dress"?
Oh, and weren't Twilight and Spike supposed to come back, "tonight"? Why were they back when it was still clearly daylight out? You guys think that was just something they missed out on, or do you think there might be some sort of reason for that?

I mean, Twilight was never supposed to be super powerful regardless. The two big things she has done on her own were with the Ursa Major incident and he amending fences time freeze thing, and in both of those instances she was visibly struggling to keep those up. While those were both impressive, it's never stated that she's the most powerful unicorn or Alicorn nor is it ever implied because we were never given rankings on who would even go into the top ten let alone how to compare them.
Hell, I would argue that the display we have of Shining Armor keeping up a barrier over ALL OF CANTERLOT easily trumps anything anything else in the show has done barring what Twilight could do when she had the power of four different Alicorn Princesses stuffed up her muff.
That being said Twilight is likley exceptional, as is Starlight. Though I would say it's entirley possible that neither of them are the most powerful mages in Equestria, simply because we don't have any data to confirm or corroborate that claim.
If anything, my bet would go to Shining Armor for most overpowered magic user, at least as far as Ponies are concerned

I mean, look at what Trixie did in magic duel. She became a laughing stock after Boast Busters because she tried to entertain people during a magic show by telling a small lie. The thing about it that bothers me is that even though its magicdon't gotta explain shitshe zaps an apple which is a lower life form and gets several chicks which are higher life forms.
You would expect a transformation spell to change one thing into another thing of relatively equal size and value. Previously we saw Twilight trying to turn an apple into an orange and when she missed and hit a bird she got a living orange that could fly around.
An apple should not be able to turn into chicks any more than it should be able to turn into a pony. I realize complaining about the rules of magic this way is the epitome of autism but I still don't like it.

Good points. Twilight was made an alicorn not because of her magic powers, but because she solved problems with friendship instead. It's uncertain if her spells are actually more powerful than average. Spike seemed more impressed that she learned *so many* of them, which must be rare for unicorns.
One thing that seems often forgotten is that filly Twilight was shown to be bad at magic. She couldn't cast the spells she was studying, and failed her entrance exam. Then Sonic Rainboom happened, power surge of destiny, suddenly she's good at magic.
Starlight didn't need that surge, so maybe she was more talented than Twilight to begin with? We can't compare their inborn POWER LEVELS, but at least they seem equal in their aptitude at learning a huge variety of spells.
