Physical age isn't really such a big issue here, throughout a lot of human history marrying at the age of 12 or even 8 wasn't uncommon, in some civilizations marrying at that age is still normal. Mentality matters a lot more in this case IMO, seeing as Equestria roughly mirrors the modern day western civilization.

Thing is, Thorax is mentally (almost) an adult, mentally a teenager at the very least. When Flurry Hearts is a teenager, Thorax will have at least a decade and a half on her, which just... If AB were one year older than Spike, she would have been one year old during the events of the flashback, and the difference between her and AJ's ages would be five years.
