Adorable episode. I was glad to see the fillies finally taken somewhat seriously again, since that hasn't happened since On Your Marks, where they were left on a vague note that gave no closure to anything. It was nice how the writer tried to give each crusader a nice amount of attention, while giving Scootaloo a justified chance to shine, through relating to Gabby's problem.

The shame in it's that the writer seems to have had very little understanding of Apple Bloom or Sweetie Belle. It's like he thought "oh, it's Applejack's sister's turn to talk. Let's just throw the word "apple" in there."
It's made up for by the fact that I was desperate as fuck for another CMC episode that doesn't bully and treat them like generic kids, anyway.

Apple Bloom's my favorite character, and I enjoyed all of her roles in season 5, so I'm especially bothered by how most of her shockingly rare appearances this season have left me feeling unsatisfied and sometimes insulted.
I can just hope this "where the apple lies" episode treats her well and is written by someone who has any respect for her. I can easily imagine them making her an idiot there, for the sake of teaching the lesson, but I really, really hope they don't.

This is different. Discord, Luna, and Zecora never go to the Mane 6 for help with personal problems. Zecora never needs friendship help at all. They interact with the main characters for other reasons and get friendship lessons they didn't ask for. They don't change easily.

Starlight, Ember, Thorax, and Gabby have all explicitly sought help in changing something about themselves and found much quicker results. There is also the minor detail that Luna and Discord are god-like figures. You can't tell the others are any different from the rest of their kind by appearance alone.

Alright, fine, I'll bite.

Almost everyone is visibly annoyed by her, most background griffons back home, Gilda when she hands over the letter, the CMC themselves through the first and second act ("Anyone know if griffons ever get tired?", for example), and so on.

She's caring to a fault, to the point where she actively lies to her friends.

She has a huge, character-defining flaw in that she doesn't know what to do with her life, and of course the fact she's annoying and never pays attention to her surroundings. Once she starts actively helping ponies out (and chills the fuck out) her popularity soars.

This character trait is absolutely CENTRAL to the plot, unlike a Mary Sue who uses her powers to CIRCUMVENT the plot.

I hope Ed stays. With Confalone gone he's one of the few writers worth their salt

This was true in S1 and S2 when she was the most fleshed out one, but not really since. She's no "Twilight Jr." or anything, the CMC are supposed to be of equal importance, with the focus shifting on an episode-by-episode basis. This episode was Scootaloo's turn.

Okay, that was a dumb exaggeration of me to say all she thought about was apples, but she's never spoken like that before. It was weird and different, but not as insulting or out-of-character as I felt. It was a bit much to imply that part meant a lack of understanding for her character, but she's never been like AJ with the weird expressions. She's always been the more "normal" Apple, in speaking habits, while still having the cute accent. It was a good deal.

Very good points, though. I still see AB as especially caring and understanding. The way she easily saw the good in and understood Zecora and Maud, and was the first to reach out for everyone they've helped as a group before this, including Troubleshoes, who the other two took longer get that he's alright, is something I really like. She definitely is very understanding, but I suppose this situation did require a different kind of understanding, needing more personal empathy rather than seeing that they're a good person and seeing through misunderstandings.

Scootaloo's chance to shine here was justified and made sense, considering the conflict. I don't expect every CMC episode to focus most heavily on AB, but her optimism and ability to motivate has always been something that seemed important and consistent, to me, so it felt unlike her to be the one to encourage giving up, when it comes to helping someone. These were especially unusual circumstances, though, so I can't call it out-of-character. Using the word "practical" to explain it makes sense. It was a different kind of problem, more fitting for a less logical approach, so her reacting differently to it makes sense and should be seen as an interesting and different look at her.

Definitely a good episode, and Apple Bloom wasn't bad at all.
