cutie marks are canon tied directly to magic, along with seemingly a pony's strengths and talents.
this gryphon proved they can have many talents, but they will never get marks. does this mean they dont have magic? is the magic a double edged blade; it gives you supernatural power in one area, but youre mediocre at everything else? perhaps gryphons can get good at everything but never as good a a specialized pony.

With cutie marks I think we're looking at some kind of self-optimization principle that's built into the pony race. Ponies can competently execute actions which aren't their "talent" up to the point of their education and experiences, and no farther, just like a human or in this case a gryphon. Also, like a human/gryphon they don't inherently enjoy (or not enjoy) executing those actions the way they do following their cutie mark's guidance - but this is selfsame because they in a sense chose their cutiemark by "falling in love" with some activity or concept. Just like a human who is totally obsessed with some activity or concept a pony who is prevented from pursuit of their cutie mark activity will become more and more unhappy and non-functional the longer they're kept from doing their "thing". The magic of cutie marks is it enhances and outwardly signals these needs, it organizes and optimizes their society automatically. It's a beautiful social solution, perfect really, everyone is good at what they do and happy doing it for the benefit of their society. Insanity and crime are realistic in being almost non-existent as social ills in pony society.
This begs the question: Was this imposed from above as a social solution? Cutie marks are clearly able to be affected by magic and are probably made from them. There may have been a chaotic time in the far past of ponykind where they did not have cutie marks and likely had a far more chaotic, malfunctioning society.
This leads to the Celestia Theory. What if Celestia, or perhaps some ancient analogue of her, invented cutie marks as a type of magic? I bet even before cutie marks unicorns could use magic and were capable of studying it. At some point a given sorceress queen was simply so advanced in her arcane skill she literally interwove magic into her entire race to vastly enhance their capabilities, their lives and their willingness to serve.

Furthermore there's always been the big question of why nature doesn't function on it's own in Equestria. Clouds have to be moved, animals woken up for spring, whatnot. Maybe the extremely powerful magic that's required to live in symbiosis with magic itself has some double-edge to it? Maybe Celestia or some ancient spell/artifact created by an ancient version of her is a sort of order-imposing beacon that permeates Equestria, a sort of Empress of Ponykind sitting on her Astronomican and what have you.
Also, Everfree, the name is literal. Celestia's fighting with her sister tore that forest a new asshole and their order-imposing magic doesn't work there - so nature just proceeds as normal without pony intervention, which is to them, odd and scary. That is also why it's the only place that has dangerous creatures - because in the rest of equestria ponies are totally in control of even evolution itself. Fluttershy can control animals like that because her cutiemark interacts with the magic field and works like telepathy. Rainbow Dash and Pinkie can break the laws of physics.
It explains everything. This is the Marianas Trench of deep lore my lads. Savor it.
