I don't understand why archives are a thing anyway: threads that break surface tension and become A Thing generally have their own unofficial archives, and anyone who writes anything can copy-paste to a pastebin in a few clicks.

Desuarchive admin here.

Basically my provider hard reset the VM that the database was on (without my permission). This happened while MySQL was writing changes to the disk, and when it was told to start back up, it threw a fit at the partially written database.

No other option except to roll back to a backup.

Not very hard, it's mostly just setting up the software. Of course, the software tends to corrupt the database eventually so you also need backups somehow.

Enabling search isn't hard, it's just a setting. Keeping search from destroying your virtual machine and eating up all the processor and disk IO is difficult. The power needed to search increases exponentially with the amount of data and since it's an updating archive it's always adding more data.

Archives without search are more likely to last longer.

I use lazyloading on reply thumbnails to save bandwidth when opening large threads (thumbnails only load when you scroll over them) so if you block javascript they don't load at all.

There are no missing thumbnails on the archive (so far) so you have nothing to worry about.
