What kind of magic does it perform?

The only show evidence we have suggests that Starlight has more magical ability than Twilight, whether it's because she's studied longer or because she's just exceptionally talented. Twilight acknowledges that she can't beat Starlight in a duel of magical power.

However, Twilight's advantage is that she has an even greater source of magic, known as friendship. Same reason she's able to beat Tirek when the raw power of 4 alicorn princesses isn't enough.

To make it simple, Starlight has the magic skill, while Twalot has the resolve.

Equlbutt is more an 'attack' type, while Twalot is still our lovely bookworm.

Twilight's greatest (and only) weakness is that she is not versed in combat at all.

Take away that weakness, and she can beat basically anyone I imagine. Starlight would be almost a joke.

For plot reasons I doubt we'll ever see Twilight's true fighting potential and she'll only just use laser beams and copy whatever spell her opponent uses (a hugely OP power she has that is never really brought up).
