You could salvage it by taking place post-parents dying and before cutiemark.

They don't have to show them, mention they're dead and you get an episode about Applejack dealing with their death.

All you have to do is have Applejack behave like intolerable lying bitch filly and then stopping when rest of her family almost dies.

Sounds nice but I thought this episodes original synopsis was that the map had some of them travel to a secret part of Sweet Apple acres but AJ is defiant in letting them go, insisting the map must be broke.
