Shining Armor has a type.
When he was a kid, he didn't understand why, but the first time he ever saw Princess Celestia up close he was ready to lay down his life and join the Royal Guard. Something about living to serve a living goddess who was the apex of physical beauty just made sense.

A few years later, he's shocked to meet a smaller - but no less beautiful - who happens to be babysitting his sister. It felt like destiny. His own personal goddess in his home. She was practically made for him. Or, more accurately, he was made for her. He wasn't sure if he would ever be good enough for her, but goddamn he was going to try.

Then Luna comes back. At this point, he's worked his way up the ranks in the guard and he's grown close to Cadence. With one goddess having a claim on his body and another who's captured his heart, he thinks he has no room in his life for another. Turns out he's wrong. Celestia assigns him to Luna to help rebuild the Night Watch. He's there first-hand as she regains her strength and develops from an overbuilt little girl to a properly over-proportioned giantess, every bit as beautiful as her sister.
He begins having incredibly vivid dreams about her (as he did when he first started serving Celestia). Cadence loves hearing about them (as she did when he dreamt of Celestia).

But a hug from his sister never involved being enveloped in tits as big as his wife's. And she was never anywhere near as tall, let alone much taller.
But it's her. The most magical girl in a few generations went and became a goddess with a body to rival the others.
