Not that I've dedicated my life to documenting the downfall of the board, but there's a couple things I could guess at.

This turned the fandom's spotlight on us and fags who never heard of this place suddenly descended in droves. Some of these people probably stayed when they found out that the 4chan bogeyman wasn't as bad as their parents said.

Caused mass hysteria and confusion on the board. Tons of people left when the board went to shit and never came back. It also created a culture where sucking mod dick was encouraged. Rulefags couldn't be called out for their faggotry because they had fucking Hotpocket Prime backing them up.

>Decrease of quality in the show / change of direction
As much as we want to meme that the ride never ends, it does for tons of people. /mlp/ is currently sitting at something like 30% or 40% of its peak posting rate. The people who remain probably still enjoy the show in one way or another and want to defend what they like.

There's other things, but I think /mlp/'s story will be one of a long, slow decline, not huge setpieces where everything got noticeably worse.

After everything, I think people just kind of gave up on maintaining their image of the board. What's the point of telling a newfag who uses emoticons on an imageboard to fuck off? You can't reason with the clinically retarded.
