We know that our Sun needs no magic in order to shine light on Earth, and it is logical to presume that Equestria's Sun does, otherwise there would be no need for Celestia to control it, maning there is something about their Sun that is not present in ours. There is no reason to assume she would be able to control something different than what she does.


Also, it depends on the settingcirsumstances. Where is Equestria in this war? If they are close enough, we could destroy them before the lack of sunlight causes too much damage, and the Sun may either return naturally or we could force one of the alicorns to move it back at the threat of attrition. Let's assume a portal opens in the middle of bumfuck nowhere, Africa, population: -1.

I really don't see any way that Equestria can stand even a ghost of a chance against any military on Earth, much less all of Earth's military's combined.

Really, it comes down to 'Can the mane six, the princesses, high level unicorns like Glimmer the Mary Sue and Discord' single-handedly win a war?

And the answer is an obvious no. At max, twenty people just don't stand a chance. You cannot win a war against millions with fifteen people. You just cannot hold enough ground.

Even assuming we can't beat them, which is a big assumption when it comes to ponies like the mane six, the second we realize that these are the twenty people we have to avoid, we do just that. We go where they're not, destroy as much as we can, and leave before they show up. Eventually, the amount of land they can reliably control gets smaller and smaller until they start to starve to death, or run out of basic, necessary supplies like medicine, and Celestia calls for a surrender to save her remaining ponies.

It would be a slaughter.

A fight on Earth would be a different matter, since we'd be playing defensive, but the idea is still the same.

Discord is really the only one here who could prevent this, but he's a wild card at best.

Fundamentally, the answer to this question depends on several things. Assuming Equestria exists outside of our universe (since we see fundamental laws of physics being broken there), then it all boils down to how magic works.

If it doesn't work in our universe (most likely) then modern infantry would quickly and easily overcome any Equestrian expeditionary force. Assuming the decision was made to launch a counter-attack, we'd struggle a bit more, but would ultimately win. While Celestia, Luna, the mane six and a handful of others could pose a threat to our military forces, there are too few such ponies to defend everywhere at once. They protect Camelot? Raid Manehatten. Or Ponyville. Or wherever they aren't. It would be a protracted, drawn out guerrilla war, but ultimately we would inflict too great a toll on Equestria, and they would be forced to surrender.

Going on the show, our forces would defeat the Equestrian military in a straight fight. Not accounting, of course, for the pony heavy-hitters. The Princesses and elements could turn the tide of battle in favour of Equestria. Early on in the campaign, Equestria would likely gain significant ground around any portal. This would scare us. We're up against an enemy of unknown power, and I think that would cause people to suddenly remember that the Geneva Convention probably doesn't apply to non-humans. All those nasty weapons we don't use on each other? We suddenly have someone to use them on. Chemical weapons, mines and booby traps, perhaps even psychological warfare. Plus, there would a huge concerted effort to understand magic. Whatever mechanism ponies use to harness it could surely be replicated. A couple of POWs would make great test subjects. Maybe the first things we'd invent would be basic 'magic jammers', disrupting its normal effect with some kind of static or random effect. As the pony lines spread too thin, their advance would stall. Their heavy hitters would be too spread out to support everywhere at once would be unable to gain new ground without losing old. Our weapons would be getting nastier and more effective as we realised what did and didn't work against magic. I think there'd likely be a long stalemate, then humans would start to regain ground as our understanding of and ability to manipulate magic grew. The major turning point would be when we first defeated a heavy hitter. From there, we would push the ponies back Garrett and faster to their portal. They'd likely surrender if we launched a counter-offensive.

Depends on what's going on. What nations on both planets, what are the objectives, what's the connection between worlds, etc. The most likely scenario that I can think of in about 10 seconds is some third world nations and modern corporations want to steal natural resources from Equestria. Maybe some covert ops from more advanced nations going on on the side. If there was a portal in the first world there would be peace.

I imagine Equestria would be thrown into chaos at the start from being horrendously underpowered compared to human tech, but the big guns eventually taking notice and crushing the human invaders. Even if the portal leads to dragon lands or something human weapons should take care of the native denizens. But once Discord or the like takes notice the human invaders would be either annihilated or quickly expelled.
