I wonder if this will be able to compete with Ponyfinder, especially since they are porting it from 3.75e to the much better 5e.

I was never a huge fan of Ponyfinder's setting, so I imagine the official version will have a huge draw.
I even made my own 5e pony rules.

I still don't know why they didn't just have some people make it a 5e supplement, especially since Hasbro owns D&D.

>>
>>28108003
>I still don't know why they didn't just have some people make it a 5e supplement, especially since Hasbro owns D&D.
Because 5e is already plagued by people thinking it's not hardcore enough for they're refined tastes I'm not one of these people, and I'd like to try 5e more and the mere existence of a pony add-on would be enough to ridicule the game more
>>
>>28108003
This will do well simply because it's not D&D. Because let's face it, D&D is shit. Pathfinder is no better, even though faggots like to parade it as 'fixed d&d' or some shit. It's the same crap but with a different wrapper.

This is an original RPG system designed around the IP. Watch the video >>28107841, they explain some of the mechanics behind it.

As much as I love Pathfinder, I have to agree with you on your first point. As a system, it's just as broken as anything else, if not more. My group loves it because of the history we have with it but balance will always be a problem as Wizards/Arcanists/Clerics can do everything.

>>
>>28108055
>>28108032
Well DnD is fucked up in that every level, every class gets this new list of "here's all this weird shit you can do". Wizards especially because they get access to a zillion spells. Inevitably, somewhere in that list is always some kind of spell or ability that breaks most encounters.

Take the Bear Totem barbarian, for example. It's pretty basic and straightforward, but it gets resistance to every kind of damage but psychic. If you give that class a high CON and the tough feat for extra HP, you've got an unkillable player character that's only vulnerable to attacks that make him take psychic damage or checks in an attribute that isn't very high. Every level he gets that much more health, and after a certain threshold you have to design every encounter to do psychic damage or force saves.

And that's only one possibility that makes setting up the game lopsided and weird. How about another? Take a warlock with the "Dream" spell. If your core villain has to sleep, any warlock that learns that spell is able to single-handedly assassinate that person. Every hour on the hour he can cast Dream on someone he met, and if at any time during an eight hour sleep he successfully wakes your villain, your villain suffers from exhaustion until he dies from exhaustion.

I mean holy fuck. The system is so easy to learn, but no, any amount of meager intelligence can break a system that gives people one to six elaborate new abilities every level.
>>
>>28108089
My OC is also a half elf orc berzerker battle mage.
>>
>>28107688
Those color palettes are ATROCIOUS !!!
>>
>>28108140
Pnp rpgs are not video games. Being nearly unkillable doesn't mean much when the rest of the party is squishy. A lone barb can't do much.

And a villian who is supposed to challenge a warlock of that level should have either spells of his own, or be able to hire a spell caster to protrct him from such assaults after the first or second night.
>>
>>28107688
just in time for the Dungeons and Discord ep, eh?
>>
>>28108164
No, if the rest of the party is squishy, that IS the problem. The Barb can survive a train crash that would kill the rest of the group. That means that if you throw something big and capable of bashing at the group, if it can hurt the barb it'll fucking destroy anyone else in a single hit. So for a balanced encounter that feels fair to everybody and makes the whole group useful, all your mountain trolls need to be able to cast some kind of mind-altering spell for some reason so you aren't playing a delicate game of lose to barbarian versus total party kill.

And I mean, you aren't quite THAT shanghaid because it is a game of imagination, but it's a challenge. Every time the party gains levels, if you don't know the system like the back of your hand, you find yourself saying, "Wait, you can do that?"

Then you trash a whole encounter you hadn't read every spell in the book and you didn't realize that an antagonist can be killed from across the globe if you can't justify him acquiring some sort of magical help.

The "Dream" problem actually came up in a game where the GM let one player skyrocket out of control to level eight while everybody else sat four levels lower. A single 8th level player can individually straight up murder anything a 4th level party of six could deal with simply because he's got four levels of arbitrary abilities.

If you want an entry-level system then DnD 5e. It's light on the rules and ability to be a minmaxing chucklefuck, very little number crunching and book keeping. Plus it's popular with normies so if you want to find a physical game it'd be pretty easy.

Kind of expanding on this:

I'm curious how they'll choose to address conflict and good/evil in this game. The CCG kind of outright avoided conflict by changing it around to 'problems solved', but that's a fairly structured environment with no real story elements. A PnP game, practically by definition, needs to have conflict of some kind.

So, are we going to see any kind of alignment axis? Will you have the option to choose between redeeming an antagonist and TO THE MOONing them?
>>
>>28109057
A harmony-chaos axis makes sense.
>>
>>28109099
Honestly, I was thinking more like an order-chaos axis. You could still have orderly good (Twilight) or chaotic good (Pinkie) characters, just as much as you could have Orderly Evil (Nightmare Moon) and Chaotic Evil (Discord) characters.

What I wonder is if they'll even allow us a good-evil axis operating alongside that.
>>
>>28107839
Isn't that one of those pony games in permanent development hell?
>>
>>28108719
>>28108743
I guess, over already downloaded 3.5 because I heard it was the best rulebook. But yeah it did seem a bit overwhelming to a normie like me so I guess I could pirate 5e as well.
>>
>>28109057
Aligments are too overrated and usually people choose an aligment and can't even stick with it.
I've seen so many "evil" character that actually have done like 0 evil stuff ecxept being dicks with npcs or just mess with the things the party is doing. I've played 2 year with a group of characters without alignmets and it was just fine. The players defined the personality of the character and that's it, there is more space for degrees of good and evil.
Example: one of the character was an ex-city guard who was actually a normal guy. But after some troubles with a Criminal Organization he started to became very aggressive towards those criminals if they showed up for a fight, but still, it was a thing that he didn't really enjoyed to do
>>
>>28109251
In my opinion 5e has the best balance of any D&D edition. There's just enough numbers and building you can do (more than most vidya rpgs) and very little dumb shit or trap options. (Ranger and Avatar monks are suboptimal, but not by any large amount. Wizards are very versitile, but are not able to out damage martials anymore.)

Calling it a baby spoon feed edition is unfair.
>>
>>28108140

If players are doing this, they don't get the point of D&D.

Your alignment is literally just another mechanic, that's the only time out makes sense. Restricting plkayer choices by saying " your alignment weoukdnt do that" is just lazy as fuck. More to the point if you don't have players that already understand the necessity for group cohesion and what a party of heroes would do, then...well, you have most parties to be fair.
>>

Of course you soon realise you're still playing babbys first system and then with luck you move on to literally anything else.

>Intelligent people can't simultaneously roleplay and break the system
I'm sorry to tell you this anon, but sometimes breaking the system to pull off absurd feats and succeed with ludicrous character concepts is a lot of fun. It's just that it's nigh impossible to plan around.

>>28110016
I've been in a few games that doled out lopsided experience. The problem with this one is the GM gives out experience for roleplaying and combat, but not for taking a twenty to research some important quest item. So one guy happens to be the GM's very close friend, he knows what the GM will think is funny, and his character "talks" his way through every encounter, thereby "defeating" all the enemies and collecting a lot of extra experience. Meanwhile everybody else earns experience the slow way, by fighting and dealing with problems. The wizard is lagging behind just a little because sometimes they task him with doing research for the group, and that means he dawdles a game day away looking stuff up while the combat characters get XP for fighting stuff in an empty field; wizard doesn't get XP in those cases since taking twenty on his studies isn't interesting.

Yeah, it's flawed GMing, but the point is, four levels of absurd higher abilities make one character able to defeat things that six other players couldn't with their combined abilities. Power growth is neither linear nor exponential in DnD. It's sporadic and explosive, and a high level barbarian fucks up a campaign way differently than a high level warlock can. DnD can be a pain in the ass system.

Yeah, I won't deny D&D is exceptionally stupid, especially the 3.5 / 3.75 stuff. But honestly, if your DM doesn't realise that lopsided Exp is making the entire party less effective and by extension screwing up his ability to run balanced encounters then he has no business running a game because he's a fucking moron. You ASA player in that situation should try and explain what he's doing wrong, and if he doesn't understand. Leave. Just boil down all the physical aypttributes to body and mind, make up a few talents based on the show, keepnthe D4 - D12 progression and rate successes by multiples of four and bang, there's the system. Simple as hell, or as they put it "introductory".

Honestly guys, you can download free copies of the savage worlds core books and just tweak them for your groups. The idea of butpying into this just seems like such a cheapo cash grab for a system that most if not all of you could probably bash together by renaming a few talents.
>>
>>28112755
so fucking what. There is no such thing as original anymore. All games have elements stolen from previous one. I play savage worlds and I plan on getting this book because from what they describe, it's designed for the mlp theme, which is what im looking for, rather than just houseruling of savage worlds.
>>
>>28112755
>inb4 shills saying "but anon, its worth it if its something I'll enjoy"
As someone who's played decades of PnP, good luck yto you finding a decent group, even online. I don't need to tell any of you the kind of people you Will find want to play this. ERP with a group oif neckbeards is about as fun as you can imagine e it would be. Then add barely social coherent Bronies into the mix. If that's the kind if game you want, this system won't have mechanics for fucking, try FATAL for that. It even covers anal circumference. This is the sort of thing ypou will want to play more for real with actual people who share your love for the show or at least the lore, but aren't utter fuckwit Bronies or ERP That Guys. Seriously, I wish you luck finding that perfect group.
>>
>>28112787
If you know the theme well enough, you're literally paying for it being printed on pink paper. Wait, who am I kidding, you'll download it regardless.

The thing is, its not jus EASY to house rule. Its insultingly easy. And if you actually pay for this you are encouraging mediocrity. Good for you.

You can always join a local meetup group, like I did, although to be honest I only met up with them one time to see the S6 premiere. The rest of their events either don't interest me or happen while I am at work. Maybe I can organize something with them after the book is released?

A local brony meet up, to play a PNP RPG.
If you're really lucky, great. Chances are you are going to have problems with players who either don't understand the social contract of the game or who simply want it as a clop simulator.
>>

Afde you one of the fucking designers or something?

I'm not fucking saying don't play a fucking RPG, they can be a god damn blast. I'm saying don't waste time, effort or hype on something that you can pretty much do yourself. Its just common bloody sense really.

You mean like this, but with ponies?

Also I would suggest that they read campaign comics like DM of the Rings, Darths and Droids or if they prefer something pony-related, Friendship Is Dragons to help educate them on how these things work.
>>
>>28112908
The few typos I made really don't detract from the overall message.

The TLDR version,

In my years tabletop gaming, I have met some of the worst human beings you can imagine. You want to combine these with Bronies. They won't all be bad, but a lot of them will be awful.
>>
>>28112926
Yes, exactly like that. Though more from the players than the GM I would hope. Still, that said if you WANT to run a clop simulator, your choice I guess, then this is going to be a bad system for it. You'd be better off full minds eye theatre.

Maybe I've just seen too much shit anon, but there will be players who seem so very very normal. Its not until the third game they're shitting on your table.
>>
>>28112928
>The few typos I made really don't detract from the overall message.
Not at all, it was the fact that you felt the need to make a run-on tangent about several topics at once that turned it into a clusterfuck. You finished with the masturbatory preaching about the board's hatred of bronies and social retards?
I mean, you said it yourself; you didn't have to tell us everything the board already believes.

Wouldn't ponies basically be like Kender when it comes to roleplay? Imagine how cancerous that would be. An entire party of Kender. Seven year old stupid and naive halfling girl-like characters that are supposed to be cute and innocent, but who only really inspire DMs to drop asteroids on everyone as they go around taunting and throwing rocks at dragons and "borrowing" items from everyone without their knowledge.

lol Kenders

>3.5e
>best
I'd like to smack whoever told you that silly. As much as I love it, 3.5 is a terrible system in many ways.
The bloat of options and granular character creation compared to other editions means it's an absolutely lopsided game with no real balance, so it can really screw a newbie over. 5e has a similar feel to it while drawing on 2e to create an elegantly streamlined experience.
That said, I love it for the sheer options, and if the group are experienced enough to optimize and willing not to, then it can be a lot of fun if everyone agrees on a power level ahead of time, since the years of rulebooks means you can create pretty much anything.

>>

I doubt they'll be in core. Maybe supplements.
I can see it now... a book for alternative equines like Batpones and Seapones plus donkeys and maybe mules, with a paragraph saying NO YOU CAN'T PLAY A PRINCESS YOU LITTLE SHIT, a book for 'tribal' races like Buffalo, deer, etc, and then one for 'civilized' ones like Minotaurs and Gryphons.
Not sure where that leaves dragons amd Dogs.
>>
>>28110734
Didn't they C&D'ed Fighting is Magic because the devs had taken it to some game show and advertised it as their product?
>>
>>28115968
>not sure where that leaves dragons and dogs
>not remembering that dragons do have a society based on who is the strongest in where Princess Ember became their queen.
>not remembering that diamond dogs are capable of making armor/weapons and do indeed have kingdoms when one such diamond dog kingdom made Trixie as their queen.

I just want to have a campaign where all of us are ponies and the party is composed of different races who have different viewpoints on how to approach life and its challenges and they would've clobbered each other if not for them being united by the powers of friendship.

>>28115995
No, it was going to appear at EVO (#1 fighting game tournament) because fans voted it up in some poll. That's probably how the lawyers heard about it, and they think if they hear of anything using MLP trademarks (mainly canon character names) then they need to C&D it. In theory, if they knowingly ignore unauthorized uses of their trademarks, they could lose the rights to them. But in practice that will never happen, and anyway there are better ways to deal with it than blindly attacking every fan project like a pack of rabid dogs.

Some other examples:
> MLP Online: got a C&D. Non-commercial and had no advertising outside EqD posts, but it used canon character names.
> Legends of Equestria: no C&D. There are no canon characters in it, and even the cities are renamed.
> Unicorn Training: no C&D. Currently for sale on the app store for actual money ($1, but still), but it's safe because it features "Clover" (not "Clover the Clever") and "Grand Swirllock the Bearded".

I'm not really saying there's anything wrong with using it, but the complexity and adding rules for esoteric things doesn't seem in spirit with 5th edition, which is elegantly simple and leaves a lot to the GM and RP.
