Celestia sends Twilight a book from Starswirl so she can help make sense of one his I completed spells. Twilight ends up casting the spell, which ends up...switching her friends cutie marks? And...,giving them half amnesia?

Twilight then talks some sense into her friends to help them remember who they are, which gives them their memories and cutie marks back...alright then. Twilight then has a realization and heads back to fix Starswirl's spell by...writing down a bunch of rhyming shit...huh.
This clearly works and the spell...vaporizes her. What the fuck? I hate Magical Mystery Cure now

Well, you were sent Starswirl's unfinished masterpiece to make sense of it for reasons unspecified by your teacher, Princess Celestia. Let's look at the unfinished spell.

"From one to another, another to one. A mark of one's destiny singled out alone, fulfilled."

...Well that's just vague. Story progresses... Okay, so it switches cutie marks, which is apparently the same as switching destinies even though you ponies claim that your cutie mark is not your destiny. You accidentally cast the spell on the Elements of Harmony, which is what made your friends get all switcheroo'd. But not you, I guess...because you were the one casting the spell? For some reason Ponyvillians don't seem to notice how they're all switched up, or just don't say anything.

So they're all fucked in their new roles (which is odd, because if their "true selves" are switched as you claim then they should all be good at their new talents, right?) and you can't think of how to help them...until you do, by reminding each other of how much you value one another as friends. This...somehow does the trick without magic? Or, it is magic, but you didn't need a spell. Or, it's part of Starswirl's spell. Um.

ANYWAY, you then somehow get an epiphany on how to finish the spell. Let's take a look:

"From all of us together, together we're friends. With the marks of our destinies made one, there is magic without end!"

Yeah! Friendship is Magic! It like totally just came to you right? Then the Mane 6's Elements...vaporize you and send you to a sparkly dimension where Princess Celestia is somehow waiting for you. Apparently Starswirl couldn't complete the spell because he didn't understand friendship like you, even though he's done plenty in the past to demonstrate his understanding of its importance. And apparently this was you final friendship lesson, the one you needed to become a princess. Not defeating a great evil, on going on some quest.

Even though you never asked to be a Princess.
