You can't play it thinking you're going to be playing a Banjo-Kazooie game. I mean it IS clearly a sequel to BT in terms of storyline, but the gameplay is literally nothing like the first games.

You need to have a creative mind to play it. Straight up, if you never liked playing with legos or building things as a kid you will never have fun with this game. If you ARE a creative person though, holy shit it's fun. People have said it before, but it does have a Minecraft vibe at times.
