That's odd, I could understand Rarity and Applejack's love of tradition didn't seem really odd but it was Rainbow Dash being so absorbed that made me think huh. Rarity, AJ, and Dash just were too much out of character. There wasn't really a reason for them to act like that. For Dash it's somewhat understandable, but it doesn't really fit with past depictions of Rarity and Applejack. Otherwise the episode was rather lackluster, it pretty much only had this one purpose of delivering this lesson, and it just didn't fit the characters well. The ending was fine though, but overall it's below average, worse than Applejack's "Day" Off even in my opinion.

Sum: 4/10. Thelowest point of Season 6 so far. This episode is a sinful failure towards everything that makes racing great. There was no style, no suspense, no emotion, no cool carts. They didn't even show the race or the finish. Shockingly, it was probably because there's nobody left on the writing team anymore capable of portraying a race as something exciting. Instead, many parts were copied from many other places, and shambled together in a flimsy fashion. There wasn't even a single plot point specific to ponies, the characters were ultra generic and could have literally been swapped out at will. Overall, an episode unworthy of the MLP legacy.

Right. To everyone saying this was merch, think about two points.
1. The first bit of merch/toy request in the show (aside from, uh, the ponies) was that Pinkie Train. People got freaked out that the show was becoming too toy-focussed then, and that was back in season one.
Did it? No. It was still fine.
This pattern has been longstanding, and you people know it and remember it well.
2. You can probably count the number of toy requests that appeared in episodes on a hand or two. Less than 20.
3. The writers - incluing Lauren - were actually TOLD to come up with toy ideas themselves, so they would fit with the show, because the executives actually respected her skill as a writer and needed her to have that creative freedom for it to work.

Don't have kids of my own, but I liked how the ep was directed more at the adults in the audience than the kids. Don't do this to your kids. Again. I'm easy to please, especially when it comes to the crusaders. I've at least liked every one of their episodes before now. Treating them like this after all of their development in the most recent 2 seasons is unforgivable. They're not even characters, here. Just something to fill "little kids" necessary for the plot, with no individual thought. Normally id agree that yeah it's just /mlp/ being /mlp/, but iv been seeing this doom and gloom elsewhere far more than before. But when I think about it at all, S6's first half comes off pretty squarely in the middle, about on par with S4's first half, weaker than 5 or 2s but better than 1s (1's second half is fantastic but the season didn't really hit it's stride till Suited for Success IMO) Don't know what people see so especially weak about it. The ratio of "Bad" "Meh" "Good" and "Great" episodes seems to be pretty similar to most other seasons so far.

Message worked for me because kids will recall the frustration (or for some, the embarassment when everyone knows they submitted their parents' work as their own), but I think it was aimed at the parents more than the kids. oh I definitely agree that TSSR was incredibly well liked, but episodes like Amending Fences, The Mane Attraction, Crusaders of the Lost Mark, Pinkie Pride etc... usually have a focal point for everyone to post about. TSSR was an all around great episode but nothing in particular could really be exaggerated beyond the writing style.
As for the new all episode poll, while I don't completely discount it, it's hard to take it completely seriously because of when it was made and how it's being used. Even the end of the season polls are done some time after the season ends. This is taking everything into consideration while the episodes are both fresh, and in some cases still being released.

Yeah, it was less about the kids and how others would see them after gaining too much help, since we barely even saw their reactions but more about the adults.
Even though it was staring at me, you putting it that way has sort of made me understand why they were so focused on doing everything with little input from their younger sibling. Just getting caught up in it all and wanting to outshine the others, especially when they'd be riding together.

Depends, it's wow moments aren't as high as S5s yet, but id place Saddle Row Review, Gauntlet of Fire, Stranger than Fanfiction, Flutter Brutter above pretty much any first half of S4 episode other than Pinkie Pride. And Saddle Row and Flutter Brutter come damn close to the best of the first half of S5.
The Crystalling is in a weird spot for me, and I basically have to rate it as two stories, for me the Starlight/Spike/Sunburst story? That was great and Sunburst is one of the best side characters in the show. the Mane6/Flurry Heart story? That was really meh and in the end just felt like a big plot device to give the other plot an ending. So it kinda averages out to "okay" definitely not as strong as The Cutie Map which IMO is tied with Return of Harmony for best season opener.

I felt TCE was more about him being level headed. He knew it was important to Twilight to do it on her own but he was still concerned about her safety. He stood back and watched over her while still being conscious of her feelings.

Except that's totally wrong, it's not even remotely matriarchal or patriarchal, it's gender-egalitarian. There's no indication whatsoever of either gender being advantaged or dominant, and there's no real gender roles. They have de-jure and de-facto gender equality.

This is all stuff that has been shown clearly in the show, just that it hasn't been addressed directly with the exception of Sisterhooves Social. Even that doesn't really say anything about it, just show it.
Things don't need to be explicitly stated to be obvious.
Look at "The Best Night Ever" if you want a good example. Count how many mares are wearing dresses, heels, and makeup and then count how many stallions are wearing dresses, heels, and makeup. That's not even mentioning the scene where Rarity freaks out about Spike coming in while they're getting dressed, before Applejack says it's no big deal. Look at the end of "The Ticket Master" and watch Applejack try to lambaste Spike for being masculine and gagging when he's coughing up a letter.
Look a "The Cutie Map" and you see Big Mac and Spike talking about hanging out over hoofball and Fluttershy being immediatley turned off from the situation and willingly putting herself into what she perceives to be potential danger to avoid it. Look at putting your hoof down where Rarity gets as close as she can to seducing some dude on a show rated for kids.
I could go on, but I'm not gonna. Watch the show and pay attention and you'll see that I'm not wrong.
Gender roles are not gender rules, just because they aren't explicit or enforced doesn't mean they don't exist. Understand the difference between the two, becuase there is a difference. Just becuase you're allowed to do as you wish doesn't mean that people won't expect that you're going to have preferences that are directly influenced by your gender.

And you're wrong, gender roles are specifically society imposing certain expectations on you because of your gender. They're wrong, and Equestria does not have them. That doesn't mean that, on average, certain preferences won't be more common in certain groups, albeit to a limited extent, but it means that you'll see tons of variety due to individual preferences and nobody will be shamed because they don't conform to some imaginary set of rules.
Nobody in Equestria is going to 'expect' anyone to do anything because of their gender, end of story. Not only is this obvious in-setting, from a meta perspective it's one of the goals of the show to eradicate that notion.

The show never did this talking down bullshit in the earlier seasons. The new blood writers keep thinking that this show isn't worth the effort minus Dave Rapp who keeps writing mostly brony episodes.
I'd never thought I'd say this, but Mike Vogel and Josh Haber might be the only ones left who actually give a shit about the show as actual writers and producers.
