In my experience most CYOAs are GET-fests with barely any writing at all. In terms of using foreshadowing and hiding hints in seemingly innocuous descriptions or remarks, Curwhibbles was quite remarkable.

The GET based CYOAs are pretty antiquated these days, and now everyone likes a narrative approach to their games. Pleeny and Fins' quests have great worldbuilding, 'Bit Quest' was funny and had really great character dynamics and dialogue, and Hijack was just fun to play with a cast of characters. Curwhibbles was fun too, but it was an extremely slow burn, like you said. There's only a handful of noteworthy things that I can remember happening in the quest.

Most of /mlp/ doesn't care about satyrs one way or another. A few people will like it and a few would be turned off. Proportional Punishment is the most well-written in my opinion. It also falls into the mixture of a normal greentext and CYOA that Curwhibbles did. Aside from that JAD, Dirty Work, and Urban Survival are some of the most well written in the past while. I disagree. I always had a feeling most of the stuff described had some sort of later significance, even if we never got that far. No other CYOA has had me going back and re-reading previous threads and finding so many things that originally seemed like insignificant flavor, but upon closer examination made me suspect it of being a clue. Especially the second thread is full of those.

Curwhibbles' main, and only real problem was (and is) that Pyrefly is so unreliable at running it. Never showing up when he said he would, without even popping in to give a reason, and the last few times he did run it, it was only 2 or 3 posts each time with hours in between.

In my opinion, which nobody asked for and yet I'm going to voice anyway because I'm a dastardly cad like that, the best way to run a CYOA is by having it be what I'd call a limited CYOA.

Basically instead of letting the thread decide entirely what happens, the author instead offers several believable choices on how to proceed at certain points in the story which can be voted on via Strawpoll, with each and every diverging storyline having been pre-written in advance.

Most CYOA threads I've seen quickly turn to shit because they rely on gets to decide how the story proceeds, and it's virtually guaranteed that at some point somebody's going to get quads while making a stupid suggestion such as to have the main character run around spewing memes before killing themselves, even though it's totally out of keeping with anything that's happened in the narrative thus far.

Another benefit of the pre-written limited CYOA structure is that the unused content can all be saved to pastebin so that people can go back later and see how the story would have played out if different choices had been made.

Butas you've said Anon and Horsewife would be grandparents, we not only have the OC offspring, but their OC partner (unless you use one of the few young characters, with very little characterization anyway), and their OC child.

Or, I guess, you could do both of the parents being satyrs.

I wouldn't skip it for either of those (although you will get people complaining either way), but it might be difficult to find any reason to like the character in the first place - we give exceptions to those based on characters we already know (see the M6 satyrs, royals, etc, etc), but you've got to convince us to get invested in a completely new character, as if you were writing something original, rather than derivative fiction.

An excellent point there. Its something that ive worked into my own stories. The element of non-satyr characters helps create relevance to the satyrs' being different as they are. It builds on the character.

I'm actually thinking of doing a one-shot where an older Applebloom (around, like, 18?) has to babysit a 4 year old Darcy while Big Mac and Femanon go out on a date. Maybe have her boyfriend Anon come over and she starts thinking about her potential future with him. Not a lot of stories leading up to the satyr making. I do recall that one story with Lyra and Bon Bon with Anon as the father.
