Not really. It is a show geared towards a young girl demographic and contains elements aimed that way while expanding on them to create a wider appeal.
Moe is targeted towards a male audience and is for lack of a more complete discription, "cute girls doing cute things" and does not deviate from that. FIM has episodes that are just slice of life but also has adventure and the occasional arching plot which are not present in the moe genre.

I will agree that fans of moe may enjoy mlp but it is not the same genre. I can't stand moe but enjoy FiM.

Because of the volume and variety.
Action has only a few variants yes.
Same with horror, mystery/thriller, comedy, family, adventure, and romance. Only maybe three or so variants in each of those but at least there are multiple genres.

With 90% of anime output it is the same shonen/moe/harem with the other 10% being any other variety. The western equivalent would be having only Bond-style action/Saw-horror/Chronicles of Narnia-adventure just changing character names and appearance and once every few months do something different provided that there is already a vocal and visible fan base to do a romcom.

Yes genres tend to have only a few styles to them but at least we have more than 3 specific styles that are released in any real measure.
