Six characters plus the goat(making it seven) is a bit lacking for a fighter honestly. Well SF2:the world warriros has 8 playable characters and 4 non-playable characters as bosses at first so thats a thing. Then SF2: turbo added Fei-long, Dee jay and Cummy as playable then making the bosses playable too thus giving the players more options on who to use thus giving it a chance to be tournament ready. If TFH wants to be on tourney scene well seven characters just wont give it enough characters to use.

Finally got to watch the first 80% of the stream I missed

Its nice to see them making pretty steady progress. Generally not huge changes between individual streams, but they're probably on schedule. I'm really liking how Oleander is turning out. Best ungulate.

I do miss when they would get the QA guys to just play in the background while they talked though. Demonstrations of new moves and stuff are neat but they don't really give you as much of a feel for how the game is shaping up.

The big thing about a burst / combo breaker mechanic like that in classic 2d fighters is, it's something you can do while stuck in a combo. Usually there's literally one option available to you while you're being combo'd on - that is to wait until the other guy is done. With a "burst" type mechanic, you will (usually at a big cost / one time use per game etc) be able to interrupt the opponent even while you're stunned and being pounded on.

Never played or liked Marvel much, actually. It's not like there's a lack of good games to cite which do *not* feature a burst mechanic.

And I don't count SG, I mean in there it's really just a hard combo limiter, do so-and-so many hits, they get a burst, that's lazy as fuck design but whatever, I'm thinking really like BB or GG where you just get out of combos for free. Playing around these is something that just annoys me to no end, imho the fact that the time where your opponent is in hitstun is sacred "you-time" is one of the things which make fighting games satisfying. A burst looming over your head 24/7 diminishes that feeling a lot for me. Not to mention stuff like people going crazy with reversals cause they got their burst protecting them should they mess up. It's not my cup of tea, so I hope they don't feel the need to implement that into TFH. Make combos do less damage, or shorter, or even shorter and more damaging, there's other variables to mess with in order to not have the game feel non-interactive for the defending player, a global burst mechanic is the worst way to go about it in my book.

That passing mod's judgement of arguable sensibleness, and the fact that /mlp/ is more cozy than /v/ with it's hardcore ponyphobia - which was probably the reason for that mod's judgement call in the first place. Because I like fighting games, I enjoyed the old game for more than "has ponies on it" and this is the same game with improved mechanics in a less shitty engine with better inputs, sprites, resolution
Also I'm not a furry but i love cute colorful animals (like Viva Piñata and animal ccrossing

Hasbro killed PonyHammer 4K, JayAnimation/Button Mash, 2 of my favorite pony reviewers and a lot of promising projects, i supported a lot of those (the PC halo game and the DBZ fan game died too)

I see, well, and I'm the "I don't want any bursts" guy. I mean explain to me the appeal of a burst mechanic like that. Without stating that the combos are too long / oki game is too strong or reversals are too weak or that in any shape the game feels too non-interactive on a defending player's side, because I vow all of that can be fixed independently.

A burst usually adds some of deep and a lot of epicness/frustration when it's used to win a round, that delicious salty tears, I need to taste them again

Now you explain to me why are you using BB and GG as examples, both games have the burst mechanic, those are probably the best examples of a good implemented burst system

"epicness and frustration" sounds like what people use to advertise comeback mechanics like ultra meter or x-factor

Cause it's really mostly just like what you said there, smart play mostly means "hold on to it until you're stuck in a combo that can kill" and then be free and get another shot. Or use it to prevent that huuuuge counterhit combo you rightfully deserve to get hit by after mashing out reversal supers or whatever. It's like a second life bar, like an additional "mini round" almost which just slogs a game's pacing to a crawl twice a match by forcing someone out of advantage for no good reason.

And don't give me those two oh-so hype burst baits you saw some japs do in that one video once, in high level play they're exceedingly rare because you can burst "fail safe" on reaction in almost any match. At least for BB that's *definitely* the case.

If you *do* value the neutral game, why not have it properly rewarded. Why not make it so that when someone gets in on you, or you get in on someone, you get your combo full on with knockdown / setup afterwards, and if they fail to defend properly further, they get damaged further, all the way to the P. It's not like baiting a reversal can't be just as hype as baiting a burst. Well I mean sure, baiting a burst is more hype because they're more or less designed to be virtually failproof and it happens so rarely as a result of that... but it doesn't make the game any more deep than just reading the opponent's wakeup behavior without the burst option available. In practice, what I really see is, you wail on someone for long enough, they're closing in on death, and then they will either get opened up and burst in order to not die, or reversal, and be out without any risk on hit, but still be safe because they burst when they're about to get punished.

It devalues everything really. It devalues the neutral game - people can be more reckless with an out-of-jail-free card on their hands. It devalues a strong oki - opening someone up is worth less when they have an out-of-jail-free card on their hand. it devalues good reads - reading the reversal / button for a huge counterhit doesn't cut it, they still have their out-of-jail-free card. Both players just get a virtually risk free STOP sign they can hold up at any point in time to reset the game back to neutral. Baring the exceedingly rare moments of, admittely, utter hype where someone makes like 3 correct reads in a row to perfectly play around an opponent's burst, they do literally not add anything to the zero sum game, just slow it down and equalize it. And again, that's not something you *don't* get without burst baits. Getting a knockdown, doing 2 throws, a meaty counterhit and ultimately a backdash to bait a reversal, and perfect someone off a single touch and a couple of reads, it requires the exact same mental aptitude.
