You have to understand that most bronies are retarded, so a fandom-wide democratic consensus on whether or not something is good isn't anything to base your judgment on.

As for FoE itself, it is a directionless, unoriginal, unintentionally silly slog, written by a man in his 40's who pretends to be a woman and jacks off to furry torture porn and writes ridiculous treatises on morality on his FimFiction account despite having done absolutely nothing of note after writing FoE. I.e. it's shit.

The main problems with FoE IMO is the pacing. People praise it for it's length (look it's long so it's like a real book see? bronies can be cool too!) but it's its biggest flaw. The story is so fucking slow and boring.

The reason for that is its lack of direction. Kkat was writing it off the seat of his pants, and anyone who knows anything about fanfiction knows that writing off the seat of your pants usually means writing a doorstopper that doesn't go anywhere.

It means writing with no outline, or even a solid idea of how you want your story to go. It's like asking "what if an alicorn octopus from another galaxy landed in Equestria?" and writing a million-word-long fanfic based only on that question.

It's enjoyable in some respects. At some points it's derivative but at others it does it's own thing at times. If anything I'd say the world building in FO:E is pretty interesting especially if you look at it from a pre season 2 perspective.

It's very much a fanfiction with a cult following. I read it at first with a grain of salt but managed to finish it and found it more or less enjoyable. It was amusing enough to keep me engaged but it's nothing groundbreaking. And if I were to be honest I'd say the writing is probably better or on par with the cringefest that is Bethesda's (That's not exactly hard to do though)

Kind of this, you should only study up on the FoE wiki to understand some of pretty underrated gems that the original story spawned. Except for Project Horizons, it's literally the original except Littlepip is replaced with a GRUFF WACKY WILDCARD CHARACTER WHO IS RECKLESS AND DOESN"T PLAY BY THE BOOK BUT STILL GETS THE JOB DONE xdxdddd.

It is ok. Some hate it while others like it. /mlp/ really likes to shit on anything fanfiction though. If you like Fallout you will probably like it because it does a good job of setting up its own "if fallout style shit happened to ponies" theme. Biggest cons are probably its length, and that it can be aimless at times. Try going to the Fallout Equestria General if you just want to see more of what it is about.

Look at it this way:

At the time, FOE was considered the first """serious""" novella-length fanfiction in a fandom that had Past Sins, Sweet Apple Massacre and Cupcakes as prime examples of the ""quality writing"" it had to offer.

Its length was easy to accomplish because, as many already pointed out, the story isn't original in the slightest. It's basically the FO3 plot with ponies sprinkled on top. Keep in mind that Fallout New Vegas was still all the rage during 2011, so by the time the fic popped out, the people just clicked.

In order to understand this phenomenom, you have to understand the FO fandom. These people are connected to their franchise in a similar way to us. They love the flesh out absolutely every detail of their characters and the enviroments (it's an RPG after all). And of course there are also the extremes. The ones who Fallout-tizes everything. The ones that would love to be a nuclear attack JUST to be a wanderer in a wasteland just because "it would be cool". Can you blame them, though? Every fandom has something like this.

My point is: In a fandom that likes to put cute, little ponies in serious, edgy and grimdark stories, when you mix it up with a fandom that loves to wander wastelands wielding power armor while listening to 50's tunes, you'll have hordes of fans waiting to flesh out the result to the limit.

This is nothing new.
