You're talking about American TV shows. TV shows in Japan have had similar problems except that the featured protagonist is usually too earnest and bland. That's why Sailor Moon was such a big hit was that it let the heroine be a total idiot who could rise to the occasion because she cared about her friends so much. After that that we began getting more variety and crossover things like Nadia that portrayed more complex and interesting characters. But in any case, it ain't just 'The Lauren' we can thank
