Hey guys!

Our next work stream is scheduled for next Friday, June 24, at 3PM pacific, in our twitch channel as always, with the archive recording going up to youtube on the monday after.

See you there!

Do we seriously have to fucking do this retarded fucking discussion every single time? Believe me, most of us would highly prefer if we could discuss TFH on /v/ since it's a lot more active and on topic, but the mods decided ages ago that TFH is a /mlp/ topic. If we try to make a thread anywhere else, it'll just get deleted.

The reason behind the decision is pretty much that there are some people still butthurt about ponies and anything even remotely reminiscent of ponies.

I also assume another reason to be that shitposters would use the fact that it causes major asspain in some and spam TFH related stuff.

Yeah
Tienhuo's is the opposite, charges really fast up close and basically doesn't at fullscreen
Oleander builds a charge be reading her book
Pom has 3 stocks and can distribute it among 3 different strengths of puppy that cost 1/2/3 stocks
Arizona gets a charge when she hits with a rope attack
Paprika starts with a bunch of charges and doesn't restore them, and spends them on random projectiles you can eat for additional effects

>>
>>27729591
It's the same devs, and FiM was clunky and difficult for them to work in due to the engine. Not to mention they were forced to stop working on FiM. I mean, they probably would've worked on FiM still if the C&D hadn't happened.

Now they can at least improve upon their old ideas while still adding new things.

The goat won't be added until the game is already out, so it'll be a year or two until you hear from that character.
>>
>>27728462
This. It's really tiresome hearing TFH fags pull "the mods said so" out every time. That's because nobody else would have it and we didn't have /trash/. Now we do have trash. This game is not pony-related. Please head on over there.
>>
>>27729851
or you could fuck off and filter the thread, problem solved.

you don't make the rules
you don't decide what goes where
you don't have a say on what's considered "pony-related"

>>
>>27729834
They'll probably be starting development on goat a little before the game releases. At that point most of the other work that needs to be done will be cleanup and polish stuff, maybe interfaces/online etc. The character design and animation for the main characters should be done by then.
So if they stay on schedule I think that means Q1 2017

She's not of the of main 6 that were kind of ports from FiM, so there was nothing more than preliminary design work done. They made her the first dlc character when adding her stretch goal rather than potentially have to push back the release for her.
>>
>>27729926
Contentwise, 8/10
Stream Quality 5/10

Tianhou's supers looked fucking great even in its basic, sketchy form, her theme song was pretty nice too and we got good info on what they've changed since last stream, how the magic meter refills for various characters and we got to see Fred.

I liked the new Oleander stuff
>>
>>27729926
Same as usual. Good to see the game getting closer to being finished every time.

>>27729884
Q1 2017 sounds very close. Once the character animations are done, they still have to create the game around them. We reached the Story Mode+ stretchgoal, too.

However, the beta should be realistic about a year from now.
>>
>>27729956

Oly's and Tian's level 2s are cool as fuck and her theme was a great surprise, but I was hoping for some actual demonstration matches. Even in this really early build it gives a way better idea of how things actually work when people are really using them instead of just demonstrating them.
Also they really need to get better bandwidth, the terrible quality hurts the stream a lot. Someone on the team must have a decent internet connection, get them to do the hosting for at least part of it. Even a few minutes of decent quality to quickly go back over some of the changes would help a lot.

Rarity would just slowly charge over time independent of range, Rainbow would recharge whenever she was on the ground, so they're quite a bit different from their TFH counterparts really
>>
>>27730565
Only in the leaked alpha/tribut edition though.
>>
>>27730654
Iirc they specifically talked about how those were changes first introduced in TFH. I don't see how it matters either way, at any rate it's different than FiMg as we knew it was.

There's also a lot of other stuff like the juggle decay style combo limiter, moves chaining into each other in any order melty blood style, Poms dogs being actual puppets instead of just fancily animated projectiles, I want to say the game has changed a lot from where it was in FiMg.
>>
>>27730819
I wouldn't say a lot, but there is a decent amount of little changes. Naturally we can only really say how different it'll feel once we're playing the game. Time will tell.

It's a free board, and I do get a say on what's pony related - which this isn't. That mod's decision which you all pull out every time was based on laziness and him just wanting to sweep a thread nobody wanted onto a board too small to protest. You're right, I can't change it but I will shitpost in every misplaced thread about TFH that appears on here.

Fuck off and go read a CYOA thread.

Here they are experimenting with patterns on Tianhuo's body. There will also be flames on her lower legs as well. Some of the detailing showing the lines of her neck scales is missing.

The TFH guys also mentioned they were going to try to put in the detail of Tianhuo's scales "flashing" occasionally, as light reflects off of her.

These "little changes" have a huge effect on how the game plays. Of course the game will never stop looking very similar, seeing how the characters are carbon copies and a huge chunk of their moveset is copied, but consider for example Rarity's aerial heavy attack from the old game, that huge swipe with her scarf. It has a huge hitbox and hits three times for loads of blockstun. It was handily the most potent aerial attack in the entire game, it heavily incentivised jumping in on the opponent or neutral jumping to control space with it without giving up an inch.

Now Velvet, they replaced it with that attack where she blows ice at you, hitting once, moving yourself backwards in the process. You're still gonna use it to cover space and as a combo tool, but no jumping in on anything with that one. Combine that with how she now only recharges meter while keeping distance, and basically they changed the entire character from a midrange-y jack of all trades who could rush you down, do nasty setups, and zone you out, to a full on "pester you from fullscreen" running away 24/7 twat who everyone is gonna hate once they actually play against her.

Which is good because that's probably what they wanted Rarity to be in the first place.
>>
>>27734294
She is a bit more of a zoner now, but whether or not it will affect the gameplay that much will have to be judged once the game is out. After all, good players didn't allow you to be anywhere else than the corner if you're playing Rarity anyway. Especially Ponka and Twilight were broken as fuck in that regard.
>>
>>27733450
>mighty no.9
I never followed that game. What it do to receive all this backlash?

I think Paprika should be taller, but I guess they are limited to character sizes at this stage, due to trying to save on costs.
>>
>>27736948
i thought it was because of balance. that they need the characters to be the same sizes, more or less. I mean, that sheep is tall.
>>
>>27737186
Sort of.
For the launch characters they want them to all have the same hurtboxes, partly so there's no character specific combos people have to learn and some moves won't be completely unbeatable against one character and useless against another, but it also makes it a lot easier to tune hitboxes and combo ability when they will work the same on every character. Later characters, when they've got more time to devote to specific weird stuff like that, might be bigger or smaller or shaped weird or something.
>>
>>27736948
Pom (and the puppy) should be smaller. Paprika should definitely be taller.

I figure that, at this point in game development, they have to keep the character sizes relatively similar due to the hitbox sizes all being the same.
>>
This game is coming along so well. Everything seems to be moving along according to schedule, and it's looking sharp as it does it.

Also, as if this thread could last in /trash/. That place moves way too damn fast.
>>
>>27734469
70k backers donated over 3 million dollars with the expectation that it will be Megaman's spiritual successor. It got multiple delays so the game took three years to be made and released, and on top of that the graphics look like PS2-era and the gameplay is average.

>>27734578
>>27735019
"Anime game" is a bit of a tongue in cheek pejorative used in the FGC to describe games which feature a fast paced neutral game, stuff like airdashes, superjumps, also different characters having different meters to work with, like it's some anime battle. You often find these qualities in games with distinct anime graphics, though the Marvel vs Capcom series for example is also considered to be as "anime" as it gets.
>>
>27737776
The game Mighty No.9 would be anime, yes. The character designs are completely ripped off from Osamu Tezuka's Mighty Atom (Astroboy)
and Shotaro Ishinomori's Cyborg 009, to name a few. I guess there's nothing original under the sun any more.
>>
>>27736534
I'm not sure about the wallstick thing, i was more comfortable with the "characters flying around the stage" BlazBlue’tier gameplay, I just hope they don't make it too boring, the only thing we can do now is thrust in Nappy
>>
>>27737998
I was thinking fighting games. That's how it was meant in that context anyway. TFH is a pretty "anime" game as far as fighting games go.
>>
>>27738072
You know, Street Fighter is also "anime", right?
If you want a widely used term for a more dynamic fighting game with less restrictive movement system, that would be "airdashers".
>>

>>
>>27738158
I mean, "airdashers" is really just "anime" but it sounds less silly. I kinda don't like it cause a game like TFH for example, Tian's meter eating command dash not withstanding, doesn't actually feature airdashes.

I've never seen anyone call Street Fighter "anime", on that note. In the "less restrictive movement system" sense. Like there's games like Vanguard Princess which are super slow and deliberate and nobody ever jumps, and even though graphics wise it looks like it's straight out of an anime, it's kinda the "least anime" anime game imaginable...?

At any rate when you go "oh that game is anime" everyone knows what you're talking about.

alright cocksucker, where should this go for discussion?
>>
>>27738970
Anyone who plays fighting games knows what an anime fighter is. He's talking about shit like Arcana Heart and BlazBlue. And you are in a thread for a fighting game, remember?

It's called anime because the games that typify them are very stereotypically anime in style: all lolis and moe and seifuku and high schoolers. It doesn't have to be strictly anime in style, though, just like a "dragon punch" doesn't have to be a punch.
>>
>>27739096
>Anyone who plays fighting games knows what an anime fighter is
That's where you are wrong.
I play fighting games for like 10 years, and I am closely following the community for last like five years. "Anime" fighting is too obscure and almost never used in the sense you people are trying to imply. "Airdashers" is a term.

A casual Google will show that you're wrong and the term "anime" to describe these kinds of games is pretty common. Maybe you spent those five years of fighting games among people who use one certain term, and they've all learned from one another -- but the broader FGC is not so insular.

Actually that should be rather easy with the hard combo limiter they have in place. If you want long combos, just make individual attacks do a tiny bit of damage but also make them add just a tiny amount to the juggle bar. Then adjust damage upwards if you're not doing enough damage, and the juggle meter amount upwards if the combos are too long. For the super you could for example have it remove some of the juggle bar (that's what they did with Velvet's lvl2 super when it still was used to extend combos), if the effect you want is that the combos become longer (thus hurt more), or just add more damage per hit if you want the combos have the same lenght but hurt more in the same amount of time. It's a pretty flexible system where balancing for damage and combo lenght should be intuitive no matter the combo structure of individual characters.

And all of that is still assuming they want damage scaling per hit be universal across the entire cast (which really is the way to go in order to never allow for stupid amounts of damage).

Would be nice to see Tianhou's super in good quality.

Do they have a hard combo limiter? I thought they had said they were going with a pure juggle decay/gravity scaling thing?
>>
>>27743628
Well yeah they do kind of a "inbetween" with no juggle or hitstun restrictions whatsoever at first, just a bar that fills but at the point where it's full, juggles instantly decay really really rapidly, also launches and restands work no more.

For all balancing purposes it's really still a hard combo limiter. It's the new grove to "pretend" you have a juggle decay / hitstun decay style combo system because people seem to love the crazyness that can come out of that, but honestly when I say hard combo limiter I mean that without judgement. I never thought fixed juggle limits were bad or anything.
>>
>>27743628
Yes. Technically there is no limit on combos, but the opponents get heavier with every hit, so at some point you won't be able to keep up the combo.

Thanks a lot for the upload mate. For some reason, watching the stream archive crashes my video driver so I really appreciate it.

It's a lot more upbeat than I would have thought. Velvet's theme sounds so "serious" in comparison.

>>27740955
From what I got, the idea is the theme just serves as inspiration for the stage tracks. Essentially they make 7 tracks per stage, one "neutral" song and one for each of the characters dominating, then they blend into one another depending on which character is leading. The songs all share the same general melody (per stage) but incorporate instruments and stuff from the character themes. On top of that there's dynamic effects, like that "heartbeat filter" for long combos and what not.

Having the game Vas selected/announced should lead to more fics as voices add a great deal to establishing characters' personalities.

I hope she has some system where her air-combo hits deal light damage but increase the impact of that ground-slam finisher, so you "cash out" kind of like Killer Instinct

Unless there is some combo break mechanic then it may be hard to balance

>>27753582
>I hope she has some system where her air-combo hits deal light damage but increase the impact of that ground-slam finisher, so you "cash out" kind of like Killer Instinct

That's sorta exactly what they have in place already, it does more hits depending on how high up you do it so you try to juggle them as high as you can and then use it to end the combo for max damage.

Also as for now it causes a hard knockdown, but I bet my guts they're gonna change that because having the thing that does the best damage simultaneously be the thing that causes the best possible advantage afterward the combo seems like a very blatant design fuckup.

They've said its going to be relatively easy combo-wise.
People seem to list Melty Blood as an example. I've only played around with it for a few minutes, but once you get the hang of it basic abc>launcher>abc>airthrow stuff isn't that bad

Does TFH have airthrows? I just realized I don't think I've ever heard them mention it.
>>
>>27754067

I don't like memorizing combo lists, I play Chun Li in Super Turbo for example
>>
>>27754077
You don't really have to memorize "lists" with any character in ST, huh.

I feel one of the cool things of open ended combo systems like the one they're aiming for here is that it's totally viable to just hop into training mode and come up with your own stuff, as well as just doing stuff "on the fly" in matches. Like you can do abc launch abc and then just drop it, let them fall to the ground and go for a throw or something, especially when they keep it so that the juggle decay bar doesn't instantly reset once they're out of the combo, you're better off getting creative with your combo routes because it'd be impossible to "learn" the best thing in every situation, you've always gotta watch out, know your options and stay flexible.

For example you might catch them from a bit further away, you can't land your entire bnb but just get a couple of hits in and end in a knockdown, now the juggle bar is halfway full, you manage to open them up but get a bad hitconfirm which scales heavily so you want to reset early again to still try to get some "fresh" heavy attacks in, and yadda yadda, no combo tutorial in the world can prepare you for the plethora of situations that might come up.

Sometimes people will ask to get their OCs as playable characters or suggest ridiculous mechanics, sometimes people have real sensible suggestions, or at least ones I feel could be considered and are at least worthy of a response or something, like tiny stylistic things or well informed and realistic mechanic proposals by fighting game aficionados. The devs really don't want to hear any of that at any rate, they just do their own thing and dismiss anything anyone says.

Which, to their credit, they never stated otherwise in any of the crowdfund videos. This game was never advertised as a community effort.
>>
>>27760149
>>27760276

Skullgirls anti-unblockable system was kinda terrible. You have to be extra super careful to not be "too accurate" with your mixups because when two attacks hit too soon one after another, only the first one has to be blocked. Iirc if they hit on the same frame, they don't have to block either one of them.

It makes sense in that particularly game because you could probably do too many silly things with the custom assists otherwise, but yeah I really hope the Mane6 guys don't have to resort to that. It feels too much like you're getting punished for good play. Design your attacks in a way that doesn't allow for unblockables instead, or at least makes them too rare to be a problem, giving you tools to hit high / low at the same time but then punishing you for utilizing them is kinda lazy.
>>
>>27757835
>I feel that when you really have no intention of playing other people whatsoever, you might as well pirate.
That's like saying you shouldn't need to pay for a can of soda if you don't plan on drinking it. If you don't use a product the way that it's meant to be used then that's your problem, not the company's.
>>
>>27761981
It's more like, if you only want to have a can of soda because you like the sound it makes when you pling your fingernails against the metal tab, and you're gonna do that two or three times then put it back in the freezer because frankly it's boring as fuck - you can go to the grocery store and do that free of charge. Your weirdo.

If you want to actually own the can of soda, full on with the possibility to drink it (because who on earth gets soda and then doesn't drink it), you won't get around buying it.

It's not really a punishment just a way to prevent unblockables which are inevitable if you allow the player to do any simultaneous high/low stuff.

>>
>>27762883
The thing is, SG didn't just get rid of unblockables, it also got rid of "hard-to-blockables" by making it so that you were safe from getting opened up during the hitstop of any move. Now the whole thing with custom assists allowing for a lot of freedom was SG's whole shtick so it was a necessary measure, but if you've got to resort to using a system like that for a "normal", one-on-one fighting game with no custom moves of any kind, that seems more like you went overboard in designing the movesets to begin with and you should probably be looking to reduce the crazyness rather than built in "prevention systems" to make it stomachable.

I mean in SG the effect wasn't really that using high / low hitting assists to mix your opponent became "balanced" or anything, without the system the game would have been unplayable (you'd get 100%ed off any hit cause you'd get eaten by unblockable resets every single time), but with the system in place, nobody actually uses "mixup assists" like overheads or low hits you could confirm from at all, because they're worthless and unfunctional really. People go for invincible / armored moves (as makeshift reversals) and multihitting moves with a lot of blockstun for super long pressure strings pretty much exclusively.

So, I think for TFH they would be better off, say, making it so that Pom doesn't have anything that causes a hard knockdown, calling the low puppy has so much startup/recovery that you will never get to couple it with a jumpin unless your opponent is asleep, that kind of stuff. If you equip her with ample opportunities to hit you low and high at the same time, but then make it so that after every hit there's a "safety period" where your puppy assist thing can't open them up or vice versa, and players have to constantly tippy-toe around how tight they are allowed to make their mixups in order to not be screwed by an unintuitive system, that's just super annoying to deal with.

Actually, it's Pom doing a handstand.

Tianhou and Pom I think, but I really like Oleander too.

Tianhou's Super ult 2 looked so nice even in its sketchy form that it felt very tempting to main her.

This. She should come up once in a while. I'm sure there are lots of people who are more interested in the lore than technical details of the development.

I would like to see some legit Pom unblockables in TFH, she has the worst health in the game and she won't be the most played character, allowing some unblockable situations will encourage people to learn hers move set and play style to counter her, that's how you git gud

>calling the low puppy has so much startup/recovery that you will never get to couple it with a jumpin unless your opponent is asleep

This, you know the puppy has an armor hit, if you let your enemy do that kind of setups then you deserve being hit

Arizona will not be. Velvet will not be. Grapplers / Zoners are destinied to be mid tier at best.

I also think Pom will not be, because the type of character they want to make her is so tough to "get right", they will often tread fine lines between making her broken good or broken bad, and when in doubt you go with the option that doesn't break the rest of the game. So they're gonna be too careful and make her ass. A small couple of players will do neat gimmicks with her but that's it.

The other three, everything is possible. Could become ass, could become amazing. My personal guess is, Tianhou will suck too hard at getting in to really be great, Paprika and Oleander just have everything they need to be awesome, mixups, movement, buttons, damage.

That's what I'm saying. Unblockables aren't aways a problem. Rarity had one in FiMg where if you stood at literally fullscreen and did the (low hitting) ex ground spikes, then jumped in with j.c, these would line up so that they hit at the same time - but it required the opponent to just be sitting still for like 2 seconds. If you do that, you deserve to be opened up. And that's kinda where I see those puppies too. Make it so that unblockables are not a problem by tweaking the moveset, don't implemenent new mechanics to bandaid the problem.

Probably Tian and Oleander, Pom looks awesome too and Arizona is not bad, I was a bit hyped for the game but after this stream I feel like I actually fell in love whit the game mostly because of what >>27758161 >>27765713 said

Tian and Olie lvl2 look awesome and both work as a good comeback mechanic, now the game has more deep, the new Supers make the game look more Guilty Gear and less Skullgirls
>>
>>27766903
Hah! Awesome Oleander cosplay there!

that's the super of tianhou? it's pretty awesome!
>>
>>27768719
Super 2 actually, but yeah, it's pretty damn sweet. Can only imagine how good it'll look once it's fully animated.
>>
>>27768755
Yeah, the animations are turning out really nice. I'm hoping they might go back and "fancy up" some of the earlier stuff, like some of Arizona's moves. Her lasso move still looks a bit strange to me.
>>
>>27769482
Oh they definitely will, the rope is still just in the "cardboard cutout" stage, in some animations it doesn't even exist yet at all.
>>
bumping in case something was left out

>be P1 dominating the match against Tianhou/Oleander
>P2 is almost dead, just a few pixels of health
>his only resource is full supermeter
>somehow he hits you with a lvl2 super
>now his character is an unstoppable op monster for the next 15 seconds
>he lands a 57%hp combo and finishes with a lvl1 super
>you lost the round

I'm ready for the salt mine, I'll be fun

It's to be expected, always. The old "not board related" trolling was more rampant last year, not like they can report the thread to death.
>>
I will say it again, this game would be better with a burst system like Blazblue, something you can use a very limited amount of times like 1 per round or a 30-40 seconds cooldown

Speaking of Blazblue, i fucking hate Velvet's play style, she remembers me of Nu-13 projectile spam

Oh just you wait, Nu has these huuuuge deadzones in her zoning patterns, Velvet is so much worse you don't even know. At least Rarity was in the old game.
