The 2011 prequel was full of practical effects when they filmed it. The director and crew were all extremely passionate about the work, and wanted to use practical effects as an homage to the 1982 film and the work of the legendary Rob Bottin. Everything in the film, from the script to the setpieces to the authentic "Ocean's 11" of the most famous norwegian actors for the Norway station crew was done in an attempt to make the film feel as true and authentic to the original as possible.
However, in its final post-production period, the producers of the film hired another company to cover up all the practical effects with CGI, in order to appeal to a wider and younger audience.

Due to this change, a few key changes to the story were made to the detriment of the film as a whole.
