This. Being dark and serious isn't the problem, it's when you try to turn the tone of "dark and serious" into some focal point, or one of the most notably things. Or when things are done for shock value alone.

It's like salt. You can add some to food to spice it, or a little more to make it a salty dish, but you can't just have a pile of salt as a dish.
