I thought it was explained in one episode the Unicorns can control magic, Pegasi have flying magic that allows them to fly and stand on clouds and what not, and Earth ponies have earth magic which makes them resilient and good farmers.
I think this stuff was mentioned in the first hearths warming eve episode, the one about the play.

I see where you're coming from, and understand why so many think she is cute, but I think Pinky's too garish, and hyper. Dash is too, but in a different way. Keeping the rating for appearance-cuteness, yes, Dash is cuter, if I'd evaluated action-cuteness, which, I suppose I should have, then Pinkie would have been higher.

She's still a genius though, maybe even smarter than bookhoers.
