Two problems with this:

One, if Torch wished to have a younger dragon become Dragon Lord so their reign may last longer, the older dragon would not have attended. So age is not an issue with dragosn (meaning they are basically immortal). This is only assuming that is the reason Torch called the smaller dragons.


Two: Regardless of the length of their reign, a larger dragon could easily defeat them and become lord themself.


Also, this is assuming that a larger dragon = an older dragon.

This is not true, as we've seen Spike grow into a large dragon in less than one day. Think back to the red dragon - how he said "But the rainbow one kicked me", in the same manner a child might blame another after a fight. These two things lead me to believe that the large dragons are actually quite young.


The large dragons in MLP are actually Spike's age or younger, but they were consumed by greed due to lack of guidance or some other circumstances. They seem less intelligent because they are young and never recieved any guidance, merely following their basic greed instincts. So they are basically children, while the "teen" dragons like Spike are actually older and wiser due to their guidance (example: Spike raised by Twilight and Ember raised by Torch).

This solves both problems. Dragons are immortal, and evn though Ember is much smaller than the larger dragons, she isn't afraid of a child upsurping her.

The dragons are loyal to the dragon lord, as Twilight noted it seems unnatural for the reckless wild dragons to do so, but they do, not to mention there are laws in regards to dragonlords and the likes, meaning you can't just overthrow the previous lord and hope everyone will accept it.
