Overall, the moral was pretty much fine in the end, but everything that led up to it was just diluted.

Well it did feel like an S1 episode, not really in a big positive way but in a comfy yet boring way. I think the post-spa parts were what dragged the episode down for me. The end game would've been better if there had been some more scenes of TwiSpike rustling about with the list making theories about why the list is so very specific and redundant. The spa parts of course were the better parts of the episode, as well as Rainbow Dash's small role as comic relief but overall, it's not an episode too enjoyable. It's just way too safe.

6 or 7. See, the moral makes complete sense and I actually like it quite a bit. Just recently I've realised I was doing far more than needed to be done until an outside eye pointed out that there's a far easier solution.
The thing is, I just don't think that kind of moral needed an entire episode dedicated to it or could really manage having an entire episode dedicated to it, which is why I understand all the >ITS FUCKING NOTHING. I still enjoyed it, as I do every ep, but there wasn't much actually in it. 10 minutes or so was probably just dedicated to repairing things.

It was boring and dull. The plot was predictable, the characters were flat, the comedy was off point and nothing interesting happened.
I wouldn't even call this SoL, it's much more like simple time filler, padding written by someone who was out of ideas at the time to fill out the season.

7/10 is what I rated it, might go down to 6/10. Nice safe episode, but even though Dusedau only had the idea for this episode and didn't do the actual writing, I felt like it suffered from his continuous problem of having a decent idea but then not executing it well, i.e. wasting it. In this case, the idea admittedly got through, but it was just way too barebones/way too slow. Almost nothing happened and there was just too much time spent on some plot points, which seems like an accomplishment as episodes usually rather struggle with having too much in them, not too few. I think it would've easily been better with some more things being fixed at the Spa while reducing the time to find the issue in the first place, as well as at the end showing more chores being streamlined. And there needed to be more, it just dragged along too slowly. Everything else was actually pretty decent, they even tackled the obvious questions like why the Spa ponies never noticed the leak. It was just too slow and uneventful to give it more than 6 or 7 points.
Once again I can't help but feel that Dusedau has potential to be decent, but somehow manages to fuck it up in the end every time. It's like he needs someone to help him write his ideas properly.

It was pretty average, hence the rate. I didn't dislike it, but I found it somehow slow, boring at times. There were some cute and funny scenes though, and I liked RD's parts. I wish we could have seen more Twilight and Spike moments. Applejack was kinda meh. The fact that she didn't want to do anything in the spa if she didn't go to the steam room first sounded a bit childish to me. And now we know that the major part of the "chores" she did until now were useless, and she didn't realize it. Seriously, some of the things she did were really dumb, like Derpy-tier dumb. Some were still funny, though.

I was noticing that, too. Apart from these few "inviting things to go wrong" moments, though, I actually kinda thought the dialogue and character interactions were better than people gave them credit for.
I mean, sure, the few "things couldn't possibly go wrong" style plot points spoiled the episode early on, but once we get to the spa scene and those moments stop happening, they're barely remembered.
I liked how this episode characterized Applejack, from her tool time boot-up to her explanation of how/why she does things while she does them. That would've made the episode a good 8 (or at least a solid 7), but with the rough and the lumps in the dialogue in the first third, it's more of a 6 (or at most a soft 7) for me.

To say something nice about the episode, I do like how Rarity and Applejack's friendship has clearly changed over the seasons, back at the start of S1 they were constantly butting heads over EVERYTHING, now they actually don't argue very much, when they do it's usually a lot more lighthearted than it used to be and feel very much like the closest of the cast.

You won't believe how often problems like hers happen. With writers or especially in blue collared work where you have to follow company procedures even when the reasons for doing so are no longer valid. There's often a disconnect where the bosses aren't looking too closely on what happens on the ground. So many things don't get updated.
The ponies at the spa had Applejack's same problem and just needed fresh eyes that could look beyond the work at hand. Applejack over organized and cluttered her work with time. Twilight and Rarity were the ponies the best help her.

I know people are saying Applejack was acting retarded, but it's more clear she's just the type of worker who settles into a routine easily and needed an outsider's perspective. Plus, the episode demonstrates pretty decisively with the steam vent scene that Applejack's good at solving problems; she's just not the best at solving her own (which is somewhat consistent to what we've seen of her ever since Applebuck Season).
Especially when you do something long enough, it's pretty common to do everything a certain way in exactly the same method, because it actually WAS the right way to do it at one time. But even once better methods arise, it's surprisingly easy to overlook them without someone to intervene and coach you on the better method.

I dunno, I think that the plot trajectory was alright if a little commonplace, but it could have been a lot worse. People are nagging that this episode was boring and in places, but if this episode happened during season 2 or 3, I feel like the entire focus would have been on Applejack trying to solve all the problems in the spa (and Rarity stressing that Applejack isn't using her relaxation time properly), and would have even been more dragged out. In other words, kinda like how I felt when watching MMMystery on the Friendship Express.
At least in this episode, the spa's problem was solved early on, and then that resolution was used to fix Applejack's little issue, which is a decent enough premise. Not the best, but far from the worst.

Slice of life episodes are fine, we had a really good one last week. This however, was a bad slice of life episode.

Actually I think i know what that Anon means when he says he doesn't like 'SoL' episodes:
Episodes with no tension, goal, or purpose.
In Saddle Row there was the pressure to get the store up and running for the opening night, along with the expectation from the beginning that things were going to go horribly wrong. There is no pressure in ADO after the pipe is fixed. And even then the purpose was 'we need to get this done so we can have a spa day'. The entire episode was inconsequential and even if the characters failed at their task, nothing would come of it.
Take Made in Manehattan for example. People liked to shit on that episode for being too 'slow' and also being a bit too slice of life, but even that episode had more purpose and drive behind it than this one. There was the underlining goal of putting on the play and making Coco's dream a reality. Without any sort of purpose to their actions, the entire episode seems pointless and essentially filler. This is probably why that Anon means when he hates SoL, he probably views SoL as a negative, since he views it as a show that is meandering and without purpose.
But most good SoL have a sense of progression. K-ON is a pretty good example of that.

Even his one truly bad episode (definitely worst in the series) had decent characterization of Spike, it was just the random bullshit plot that dragged it down.

But it was playing completely into everything that DQ built up: the lore that *most* dragons are assholes, Spike rejecting his kind in favor of ponies, even Ember was "stereotypical depiction of an angsty teenager" similar to how the other dragons were portrayed, only she got a little better by the end of the episode because she got her way anyway.
